big up/credit to anyone that can run 42km

    • +4

I signed up when they had it for $1 per km. I ran 24km yesterday…I have no idea how I'm gonna get to 42.2km

      • +2

Do you get to pay only $24 then? If so, I'll sign up for $1

        • At that rate, that’s a deal. Getting into marathon run for 30 cents is steal. Off course that’s for me.
Others may get for 10 cents I reckon.

      • Yep I didn't sign up when that promo code was posted. Then mentally told myself if I see it again I'll sign up…..boom got it in my inbox on the next couple of days.
Missed the 42km for 40yo cos of lockdown.
So 42km for 41 this year

I only did 17km yesterday and yea….no idea how I'll get to 42km.

        Good luck.

        • +2

Thanks… It's gonna be a new experience… Possibly a horrible one but hopefully I'll finish it.. in aiming for under 4hr 30 min

          • +7

@maddoglee: I've run a few - Try to get to 32 ks in training and see if you can find something you can eat while running e.g. bananas, dates, gels sweets… Whatever works for you, practice during your long runs, that will help with the wall. All the best and enjoy the training process and the day.

I did the Melbourne marathon in 2010, and never ran more than 30km in the lead-up. Needless to say, at about the 35km mark I was feeling VERY average…

        • +1

Yeah I've heard about the wall. I'm aiming to get to 32km.. I don't I'll have time to do any more.. I was getting pretty average at the 23km mark haha

thank you, now i just have to try to do it all at once, instead of doing it in 20 years.

What do people get out of it? Any prizes? If not, why would anyone pay to run?

    • +4

      Leg day

    • +4

"Is running across one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks on your bucket list? Then this is the event for you."

      • +2

Free to walk on the pedestrian part of the bridge!

    • +20

You should change your username to walkamuck

    • If prizes then only like a few people in Australia would benefit from it

    • "Your entry fee includes your race bib and timing tag, finishers medal and finishers shirt."

      • Oh yay, almost a hundred bucks for a participation award.

    • Why do people pay to go to the gym??

      • For the thousands of dollars worth of equipment on offer, group activities, AC.
        Dumb comparison.

    • +9

      Fitness, the challenge.

Same reason people climb Everest (though not the same scale of course).

But paying makes it official, so again it's just like you have a record of it instead of just saying I can do a marathon in x min with no record of it.

    • +4

Some people enjoy the challenge of distance running. Mass participation events like Sydney Marathon offer the opportunity to run an exclusive course, with other like-minded competitors.

"Any prizes?" Do most people who participate in sports get prizes?

    • +4

bragging rights and sense of achievement

      Why pay to do anything?

What is the meaning of life?

    • +1

Why would anyone pay to see a concert live when YouTube is free?

      • Why pay OnlyFans subscription when there's numerous free sites elsewhere.

  • Looks like code only works for the full marathon. Tried this for the 10km and it didn't work(half marathon was already sold out).

  • +11

    I wouldn't run 42km for free!

    • +27

don't worry, you can't. you are already out of breath just going from the bed to the refrigerator.

What’s to see? A woman from Norway, a guy from Kenya, and 20,000 losers.

      And @jv from ozbargain

      • The man the myth the legend.

Some say he never blinks, and that he roams around the woods at night foraging for wolves. All we know is he’s called JV.

  • $2.26 per km. Good deal!

  • if i wanna run 84km do i have to pay twice?

  • Interesting Sydney need to offer these discounts, Melb mara sold out weeks ago, the early bird discount only saved $5 if i recall.

    • +5

They're trying to go big on numbers and get included in Abbot World Marathon.

  • -1

It's ridiculous to pay $95 to participate in a running event, and that is after 40% discount, and they also want you to fundraise.

That said, it's actually a brilliant idea: to get a whole bunch of "contenders" to pay for an event for real athletes to feel special.

    • Cheap.. Melbourne’s Around the Bay ride is $245..

      • It's people like you encouraging event organisers to up the prices year on year. They see people happily to pay more, so why not charge more.

You can run the entire course for free any other day and time, so not too sure what you get out of it by crowding around thousands of other people, perhaps a couple of selfies for social.

        • you must be fun

        • +1

There's plenty of reasons. It's easier to push yourself when you have an event you're aiming for rather than an arbitrary one that you can always push back if you have a good enough excuse.

You run differently when you're running with others. I'm a deep introvert and I'm no marathon runner but it's a different dynamic being part of any event or running group.

And much like a concert, it can also be the feeling of being around like-minded people, who also have trained to be there. Running the race is actually a 'celebration' of all the hard work you did in the lead up. The vast majority are there to just complete or to run their best time, not to actually win, the athletes that do are already bloody special without the rest and hardly need the 'subsidisation by contenders'.

In regards to cost, I imagine it's the increased cost/insurance etc year on year of running the events too.

  • Imagine paying to run.

    • +4

      Right? I'll just download it.

  • +3

Upvoted deal just to get it to 42 🙂

  • If I get paid $950 for marathon Then I will think of it….

  • Ah just in time to burn off the ozbargain free pizzas

  • +11

Any idiot can run. It takes a special kind of idiot to run a marathon.

Good luck to my fellow ozb runners. I'll be running the 42.2km. I managed 30km on saturday and can confirm the marathon will hurt.

  • Any recommendations for a cheaper one for Melbourne?

    Thanks

  • +1

I will resist as I'm trying to break the record for the longest time between marathons. I'm not sure what the record is but I think I have some years to go.

  • I've already joined the half for the Melbourne one this year. Would be good to change a scene next year. Love the comments haha
