Seiko "Golden Panda" Speedtimer SSC817P $599 (RRP $1,050) Delivered @ Starbuy

630

It's back, the popular Seiko Speedtimer. Today, it's the one known as the "Golden Panda".

Last on sale for this price 3 months ago here.

If you like these Saytonas the new Speedtimer design is quite different; indeed, I refer to them as "The Scream" after the famous painting by Munch. Once you see it…. I have no reason to believe the classic Saytona Speedtimer is going out of production any time soon, but why take that chance eh?

Anyway, back to these. We know the specs by now:

  • Case Diameter: 39mm
  • Case Thickness: 13.3mm
  • Case Material: Stainless Steel
  • Glass type: Curved Sapphire Crystal
  • WR: 100m
  • Power source: Solar, no battery or winding required

There's no doubt, it's a classic model.

However, if you don't like the colourway, there are alternatives. No, settle down, not the white dial variants. From Watsons we have black and blue dial models:

Black dial @ $614: https://watsonsjewellers.com.au/products/seiko-prospex-speed…
Blue dial @ $598: https://watsonsjewellers.com.au/products/seiko-prospex-speed…
less 5% with signup discount. So both cheaper if these are your preferred colours. Or you just want one.

Go on. You know it will look good on you.

  • Was on special last week too ;-)

    • +3

Was it? I couldn't find anything to suggest that. You don't commonly see the same model in the 1 Day StarDeal successive weeks.

BTW, if anyone is seriously interested in getting something from Watson's then feel free to let me know. As a local I can go into their physical store and they have told me on a couple of occasions that due to them being a Seiko full-service dealer they can't always match pricing online, but they're always happy to entertain price-matching in person.

      • I saw it last week as well. Was suprised to see it again today!

  • The black and white (dark navy ) panda looks the best IMO.
    never $599

    • +2

It had been $599 numerous times.

      • Correct, Never under $599, not that great a deal.

    • +15

Because you're not a man of culture

        • +6

"People with a different opinion than you aren't being stubborn or personally offended by your opinion. Grow up and learn to disagree. I have posted an alternative with an alternative point of view. In my view, ANC disrupts audio and isolation is good enough. In your view ANC has murdered my family and I have some sort agenda against it."

            • +17

@boomslung: Why would I need headphones when I have a device in my pocket that has a speaker as well as makes phone calls and allows me to shitpost on ozbargain. Why would I spend this amount on ancient technology that does none of these things?

              • -6

@WatchSnob: Wireless headphones are a fairly new technology. Are you actually trying to argue that they aren't.

                Ok then, carry on.

                • +7

@boomslung: The point is that not everyone values the features that you do. Wireless headphones with ANC matters to you, but there are people who don't give a shit and wouldn't spend $200 bucks (at minimum) for that. Obviously I'm hyper focusing on one aspect of headphones being "plays sound", same as what you're doing with a wristwatch, "tells time". I don't think you're actually dense enough to not see the point, you're just being a wilfully ignorant troll. But it's fun to point out your hypocrisy.

        • Boom: that's because you're not a man of culture

          • -2

@djmm: Is this what sundial enjoyers copium looks like?

    • +8

Its a good watch. You can't wear this in your bedroom by yourself. This is a moments watch. Those 2 am drives. Those beach days. Those summer nights in the city. Those vacation nights. That is what this watch is meant for. Little bit of tequila and a bad chick with you and I promise you will be vibing like crazy with this. We like different kinds of watches in different setting and circumstances so why do we judge watches in the same settings and circumstances.

      • Sounds like you're playing a 80s watch commercial in your head rather than having actual utility.

        • +5

Sounds like you are trolling without having an actual point.

      • I'm getting déjà vu

      • +3

I wear all my automatic watches alone by myself. It's how I keep them charged up. Lots of wrist action.

        • Same way I get my steps done for the day

Guess there is zero point of you commenting at all really, if you're not going to add anything useful.

@G-rig: I am warning people of the dangers of using obsolete technology in the great age of advancement. This thing doesn't even have automatic updates and you will miss important appointments if you live in a dark environment.

            • +1

@boomslung: In no way is it a danger lol
It's more effort changing a smart watch as well as a phone every day..
              Catch ya

    • Is this some sort of poor man's joke?

      • -3

Yes I do not enjoy spending $600 on an man bracelet.

    • +3

It's amazing how people can have a desire for things in life that you don't, right?

      What a senseless post

      • -3

I do not have a desire for obsolete accessories. Thank you for your senseless post in response, dear arbiter of sense.

          obsolete accessories

I guess you probably think that necklaces and rings are "obsolete" too?

    • +1

You wouldn't. But I would. Simple. Not everyone is the same person as you ….

      • -3

Yes, I respect your decision to rub sticks together to make fire as well. Thank you for your deep insight into how opinions work.

        • +7

You've been sounding highly defensive on everyone's replies. Why so salty? Tough day? Hard job?

          • -2

@djmm: So basically there's no argument except:

            1. What are you poor?
            2. You are so upset because you are replying. (Not an argument just projection)
            3. How can you respond to me? Your life must suck!

            Carry on my dudes.

@djmm: Maybe I am employed to educate the people on how sundial enjoyment is detrimental to human development and advancement?

    • How much did that device cost? How long will it tell the time?

      • -1
        1. About the same although it is not a unitasker.
        2. As long as it can hold a battery charge afterwhich the device can be replaced or the battery serviced. Most likely the device will be obsolete by this time and a newer model with more features can take its place.
        • +1
          1. The phone does do more tasks yes. Although obviously not as well as a watch can do this basic task, but yes, a phone can tell the time.
          2. From a purely telling the time perspective, this watch doesn't require daily charging to tell the time though, so there is that. It also isn't prone to security compromises, data leaks, expanding batteries. It is also made of harder steel, and it's screen is sapphire unlike your phone, so it's MUCH more durable and much better built. You don't need to put a case on it either.

I guess as a side note, although you can chat and call your friends on your phone, this doesn't mean you shouldn't go see them old school style. Just because you can watch movies on your phone, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a TV. Just because you can do your work mostly on your phone, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a PC or laptop. Just because you can game on your phone, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a gaming PC or gaming console. Just because your phone has speakers, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy headphones. Get my drift?

          • -2

@onlinepred: Just because you can game on your phone, doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a gaming PC or gaming console. Get my drift?

Actually this is not an apples to apples comparison although you are trying to make it appear so. Although you may get some superficial utility as a status symbol to show all the other sundial enjoyers it does not tell time any better than a phone, stove or microwave.

            • +2

@boomslung: Exactly, you have proven my point haha.

You personally see the value in a gaming pc/console vs a phone. If I play Tetris on my phone, why would there be value in buying a gaming pc to play it?

Personally, I grew up wearing watches, and I tried not wearing one and using my phone, but I really couldn't get used to it, I kept lifting my wrist to check the time. And I don't want to have to pull my phone out of my pocket constantly to check the time, it's a HUGE pain in the butt personally. So, as we have seen and concluded, watches and gaming are hobbies or personal preferences.

And yes, a watch can tell the time better than your phone, it's on your wrist, doesn't require charging, will continue to tell the time long after your phone has died or lost charge, and can tell you the time when you don't have your phone on you. Your phone requires electricity and the internet to tell you the time.

            • @boomslung: Ah, more assumptions with broad generalisations.

My coffee machine has a clock. It gains 12 minutes after just a month.
The microwave loses about 10 minutes in a month.
              They tell time. Badly.

Something-something Jack of all trades, master of none.
Something-something Right tool for the job.

              • @Speckled Jim: Maybe you should get a better coffee machine and microwave instead of a $599 unitasker that doesn't even make hot water or food

                • @boomslung: Ah, but they perform their primary functions very well indeed. Why would I spend more money on relatively bulky items such as those, when they're still operating? That's not the Ozbargain way!

Why would I unnecessarily contribute to landfill when I can just turn my wrist and admire the aesthetic of a precision machine designed to keep accurate time? That's not the War on Waste way, and Craig Reucassel is a man with A Very Particular Set of Skills.
He's a Chaser, after all. I suspect you're too young to know that.

Why, when I can slowly amass a collection of small treasures such as these exquisite machines? One for every occasion, outfit or activity. Unlike microwaves, coffee makers or phones, some watches actually appreciate in value. Imagine that!

Lastly, a piece of well-meaning advice: let go of the whole "sundial" trope. It's cast you as petulantly childish.
None of these watches rely on sunlight to show accurate time, nor charge them — any light source is fine for solar watches. Nor do they cast a shadow, but for the metaphorical one over your quirky minimalist OCD.

        • battery charge

So you admit it! Your device requires repeated electricity consumption just to be able to tell the time. That could add up to THOUSANDS of dollars worth of electricity over the life of the device.

          • -3

@donga100: For the device to consume thousands of dollars in electricity, it would cost less than a dollar per year given a 3 kilowatt hours a year of average usage of a smartphone. To recoup your investment on your electricity for your solar powered Seiko you would have to wait 599 years.

Now go back to shining your faux luxury watch and pretending it's a good investment.

    • If you don't know, then you don't know.

      • I agree with this wholeheartedly, except probably not in the way you would like.

Also I understand why the sundial enjoyers are panicking.

Must be hard when your stamp collection is devaluing. Remember that money spent on things you enjoy is not money wasted!

    • +2

I wear a far cheaper digital watch, but it's much faster to flick your wrist to check the time, rather than reaching into your pocket, pulling out your phone, orienting it correctly, pressing a button to check the time, before returning it to your pocket, all the while being careful to not drop it on the ground.

Then there's the fact that you don't need to charge it every 1 or 2 days, and it (the watch I wear) has a much more conveniently accessed audio and vibration alarm.

      • This is what a rational well thought out response looks like. Totally valid and I can see their point of view.

Unlike the baying crows of "You are poor and uncultured" and other variations of logical fallacy.

    • Member since 2018 and over half of your comments are in this thread. Sleeper troll account?

Maybe I'm just bored today. Thanks for your great contribution to the discourse. That has real relevance to the points made.

Man there are so many great cybersleuths here that are all internet savvy and great at doing ozbargain credibility checks. At the same time they use mechanical sundials on their wrists to tell time instead of checking the corner of their screen.

There is a joke in there somewhere about the logo and twitter but I can't figure it out.

Gorgeous watch though, would be an instant buy if I had the cash.

    • +2

Elon the kind of person to sue Seiko for stealing his new logo design.

  • Oh this is nice

  • Just recently got a PRX Powermatic, so not in the market for a watch right now. But nice post OP, its a nice looking Seiko.

    • Did u get a sick deal on it? I’ve been eying the gold Prx haha

      • +1

Would have loved to get a gold, but they don't have it in automatic (or they didn't when I bought).

I got it on sale, 25% off RRP. Green dial Powermatic 80.

        • Nice yeah I reckon green is best in the ‘normal’ colours

        • Where did you go to find a 25% discount? Been looking for a while to get one

    • I've got a few swiss autos but I need a pick up and go, holding back on PRX as it doesn't have screw down crown. Hopefully they'll add in the coming iterations.

    • Oh my saw the icy blue PRX in Malaysia. Was so so tempted. But bought the seitona panda few months earlier.

  • +9

Seiko really are the OG and once you buy one, you start to question why you should spend 10x for the same tech in a Swiss/German watch.

it's a slippery slope though, soon you'll be looking at Grand Seiko.

    • Me with an sd1970: sweating

Haha @WatchNerd !!!! What have you doneeee

    • +2

Don't bypass Citizen either, they've been kicking some goals lately too. I'm about to pull the trigger on the new "Unite with blue" diver, man that dial is something else. I can't imagine what it would cost on a Swiss watch.

      • I find Citizen watches to be really bland. Great price point, but really bland. Seiko makes some beautiful dials - especially the Grand Seikos. Oh man….I need one of those.

        • +1

This is true for just about everything they makert outside of Japan.
However, if you look at some of their JDM stuff, you will be thinking; how is this even the same company.

      • Got that one, wear it a lot :).
Solar quartz/Eco-drive is the go these days.

    • +2

I love Seiko, but tbh once you buy a Casio you begin questioning why you'd spend 5x more for a Seiko

      • +1

        Appearance, style, variations mostly.

    • I'm stopping my collection at 5 until I get a Grand Seiko!

    • Have a look at Orient.

Their moon phase watches are gorgeous.!

  • Are these japanese made?

    • Cased in Thailand I believe.

    • -1

      No.

If it says "Japan Movement" then it's going to have parts made in their supporting factories across malaysia, singapore and china.

I think only a few select top tier models and the Grand Seiko are wholly made IN japan now

    • Parts and movement made in Japan, but put together elsewhere (likely Malaysia but they produce in other countries too).

If you want the JDM version, look for model numbers SBDL08x but you'll pay through the nose for them, if you can even find one.

      • +1

The SBDL089 is available from seiyajapan for $441.88 USD but it looks like it still assembled outside of Japan as is doesn't state "Made in Japan" on dial.

  • Does this suffer from the Seiko hollow end links as well?

    • +2

These links are solid. Much better quality the average Seiko bracelets
