Seiko "Golden Panda" Speedtimer SSC817P $599 (RRP $1,050) Delivered @ Starbuy

630

It's back, the popular Seiko Speedtimer. Today, it's the one known as the "Golden Panda".

Last on sale for this price 3 months ago here.

If you like these Saytonas the new Speedtimer design is quite different; indeed, I refer to them as "The Scream" after the famous painting by Munch. Once you see it…. I have no reason to believe the classic Saytona Speedtimer is going out of production any time soon, but why take that chance eh?

Anyway, back to these. We know the specs by now:

  • Case Diameter: 39mm
  • Case Thickness: 13.3mm
  • Case Material: Stainless Steel
  • Glass type: Curved Sapphire Crystal
  • WR: 100m
  • Power source: Solar, no battery or winding required

There's no doubt, it's a classic model.

However, if you don't like the colourway, there are alternatives. No, settle down, not the white dial variants. From Watsons we have black and blue dial models:

Black dial @ $614: https://watsonsjewellers.com.au/products/seiko-prospex-speed…
Blue dial @ $598: https://watsonsjewellers.com.au/products/seiko-prospex-speed…
less 5% with signup discount. So both cheaper if these are your preferred colours. Or you just want one.

Go on. You know it will look good on you.

  • Nice post, but…
These aren't the droids I'm looking for.
    Move along. Move along!

  • Always loved the design of these, but the 39mm x 13mm width to thickness ratio makes it sound a bit puck-ish

  • +2

Got one of these last time they were on special, she's a beautiful watch for the price.

  • Nice watch but a few things - it's a bit thick and heavy for its size. I got the black/white panda from the last deal

Posting RRP for watches or anything from Amazon should get an auto permaban IMHO.

    • +2

RRP for a Rolex Professional, AP Royal Oak or Patek?

      Sign me up please!

      • Because those are all likely bargains to be posted on OzB, obviously.

    • +1

Divide RRP by half for Seiko and citizen and you'll get the realistic price.

  • Great watch and price.
Starbuy can we have a deal on the citizen fugu again especially the batman with rubber strap!!!

    • +1
      • What's so good about the fugu out of interest?
Better than a kamasu I guess. Lefty crown would be annoying.

Guess iconic and simplicity, prefer eco-drive these days though.

      • Brilliant. Someone was listening.
        Ordered earlier.
        Cheers Starbuy.

  • Urghh must resist temptation to buy another watch

  • Give me a Daytona or Seiko, my pick would be this all day, everyday. Whose with me?

    • No one.

Even if you didn't like the Daytona. Sell it and you could enough Seiko's so you could wear a different one each day of the month.

  • Would have bought a gold version with nice dial colour 😊

  • The dial just looks piss yellow in other photos. The white dial is interesting but I've already got 2 seikos, that's enough. It's probably time to try and get a casioak :p

    • Agree, it's nothing special and I already got a Pagani Daytona (another option, and their other chronograph homage are good too for the price:

Be cool if Casio and AP did a collab like the moonswatch. It probably wouldn't be worth buying but cool.

      • Moonswatch is one of the biggest disappointment in the watch world.. held one in my hand and it just felt light and cheap.

        • +1

Yeah there was hype this week with another special edition release, sold out but only about 20-30 people in line in BNE. Definitely not worth $460, most people would be putting them on eBay straight away but would be lucky to make $100-200 profit imo.

Nico's review is on point, feels like a toy, wouldn't last 2 years and not worth it at all.

        • I thought you said moonwatch for a sec.

The moonswatch is a swatch after all.

          • +1

@JimB: No I was taking about the swatch collaboration, not the omega Speedmaster.
(Wouldn't mind one of those though).

            • @G-rig: I haven't really been following the moonswatch since the first release.

I guess all the hype has died down.

              • @JimB: Think so, I couldn't be brothered with them, even for a quick flip. Selling anything is a hassle.

  • Is there still a lot of interest on watch like this? I assume in this era a lot of people would opt for a smart watch for that price tag.

I received THIS watch as a gift. I was told it is a Seiko Kinetic. Tried to find information on it online with no luck. Will this have similar worth?

    • Is there still a lot of interest on watch like this?

Currently 58 upvotes on this deal and lots of activity on other watch deals, so yes there are still devotees of traditional horology.

      Will this have similar worth?

The case back should have more identifying information to help you work out exact model. chrono24.com is one source to get an idea of value.

    • +1

When did you receive it? It still has protective plastic wrap on it, but that's a 7N42 movement watch, which was used from 1994 through to 2007. It's not a kinetic movement, plus their kinetic watches had "kinetic" text on the dial.

If you don't have any info on the model number, try posting on r/Seiko, someone there will undoubtably identify it.

Smart watches are universally ugly, and soulless.

      • It was definitely more than 5 years ago. I dont wear watch often, but when i do, i stick with the same old one that i had for a long time.

I tried the smart watch before, but the need to charge them, before using them, defeats me, especially as i am not a daily wearer.

Thanks for the input and info, i will try the reddit. My understanding was, anything that doesnt require a battery is kinetic haha..

      • You are right! I found the model number SGEE53P1 and they are not kinetic. It worth around $300 new and it is no longer produced.

    • +2

I don't wear watches often, but have zero interest in a 'smart'watch that will be landfill in 3-5 years.

I have three watches, a ten year old digital Casio, a quartz watch that's about 20 years old, and an Omega mechanical from the late 60s.

If I want a computer, I pull my phone out. The bigger screen is far more useful to me.
