    These movies are quite cool

    • +4

They are actually very hot 🌋

    • They are precious…

  • +1

The Hobbit and Harry Potter sets are also on sale. Not sure if they are bargains though.

  • +17

Aha! A chance for Faramir of Gondor to show his quality

    • Tolkien purists say no.

      • +3

It's about as perfect as we are going to get for a film adaptation. Can't imagine what the "purists" think about the Rings of Power tv series haha

        • I don't think it's that bad , after all , nobody's perfect…

  • +4

    The GOAT trilogy.

  • +8

One does not simply walk into JB HiFi. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume.

YOU SHALL NOT PASS up this bargain

  • +31

    Buy, you fools!

  • +3

    If only I had a 4K player

    • I wish I had a PS5 already, that’d work for this

    • lol i was just about to ask… any deals on a 4k player? or even one that's decent value?

      • +3

UB820 is the one I've got, but wait for it to go on sale at around $450 (the cream of the crop for the price point).

Otherwise there are some Sony players like the https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/blu-ray-disc-players/ubp… but they've been reported to have problems (freezing, not detecting DV etc)

      • +2

DP-UB820 is a better player due to HDR Optimiser, but DP-UB450 is a fine player and on sale at the moment for $299
        https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/panasonic-dp-ub450gn-4k-u…

        • Picked up the DP-UB450 for $254 during Prime Day sales (JB had a sale extra 15% off code) works great a step up from 4K streaming!

        • No dolby vision as well on the 450 to get the most out of these discs or support for 7.1 surround sound (if you need it), but it does the job

          • @Ethan Bargain-Hunt: Would a PS5 be okay?

            • @tobia: If you don't care about having Dolby Vision (which you also need a compatible TV for), a PS5 is fine. You just wouldn't be getting the most out of these disks.

    • need to buy one

  • +7

This + big screen OLED + Hi Fi system =🍿💦💦💦

      Soggy popcorn

      • You'd think the salty popcorn would have dried up all the liquid

  • The extended editions are good for when you are waiting for your economy-shipped goods from AliExpress to arrive.

    • +3

Having recently rewatched the extended trilogy, I will only ever watch the theatrical releases from this point forward. A fair argument could be made about the two towers, there was a scene with Sarumon that lost heaps of context due to cut content. But overall I found the flow of the extendeds to be way off the mark. Having gone down a bit of a rabbit hole afterwards, I read that Peter Jackson himself essentially said words to the effect of 'the theatrical release is how I intended them to be watched'.

      Possibly controversial opinion?

      • +1

No, I agree with you. I watched the extended/special cuts once or twice and thought "Never again". Totally agreed on the part about Sarumon as well, since it kind of doesn't get mentioned in the theatrical release. But apart from that, the extended scenes just make it really drawn out.

      • +3

I'm the opposite. I've only watched the theatrical editions once. I watch the extended editions atleast once every year. For me, that's the only way to watch them. I can't watch the theatrical cuts anymore.

Boil em, mash em - stick em in your TV cabinet

    • +1

Rip 'em, transcode' em, stick 'em on your server!

    Run time: 32 days

  • +1

Not once does Frodo and Legolas interact with each other.

    • +5

"you have my bow" doesnt count?

    • What was Peter Jackson thinking leaving out the sex scene from the books?

      • Brokeback Mt Doom? 😅

      • There was supposed to have a sex scene? I only know now after all these years because I am too lazy to read novels. Between whom?

  • +3

Bezos trying to get rid of actual great Tolkien content. Back to the shadows!

  • +1

Folks in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going, because they were holding on to to something.

That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.

Samwise Gamgee, The Lord of the Rings

    • Yeh fight for negative gearing 👊

  • +2

There are good movies in this world Mr. Frodo. And they are worth paying for.

    • Sometimes paying over and over as the media changes from VCR tapes to DVDs to Blu-ray to digital to 4K

      • You went from the Blu-ray to digital? I'm sorry for your loss.

  • +3

A day may come when the courage of men fails to buy LOTR in 4K at a discount, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of bargainship, but it is not this day.

    • +6

Ozbargain, my friends. You pay full price to no one.

  • +2

Great trilogy - i wish Amazon watched these before they made that awful TV series on Prime

  • +1

Thanks OP, grabbed one. Not sure whether I should finish the collection with the Hobbit Trilogy thats also on promo: https://www.amazon.com.au/Hobbit-Trilogy-Theat-Ultra-Blu-ray…

    • You should.

  • Might buy this if only to rip it into a home server and own it forever without interference.

  • +1

Great step up from the blu-ray versions, as they fixed the colours
    Fellowship especially looks very different

  • +3

For any lord of the rings fans, Phil Dragash does a killer soundscape reading. I absolutely love this version of the novel as an audiobook.

    https://archive.org/details/the-fellowship-of-the-ring_sound…

    • I just finished The Two Towers, so glad I found this version, loving it.

      • Iv listened to it a few times. Phil nails the voices, and the soundtrack brings it to life. Return of the king is wonderfully read. Enjoy!

    • Thanks for highlighting; sounds great!

  • OOS damn

  • This trilogy makes me feel so nostalgic I don’t know if I can handle it if I buy it and watch!

  • is 4K better than bluray ?

    • +3

Yes. Although technically 4K UHD is bluray, its just 4k bluray.

However, regular blurays are 1920 x 1080 resolution while 4k UHD resolution is 3840 x 2160 - its twice as good.

Also, significant difference in dynamic range.

      • +3

regular blurays are 1920 x 1080 resolution while 4k UHD resolution is 3840 x 2160 - its twice as good.

Minor correction: four times as good.

  • +2

22 years later and I still never get sick of these movies. Eternally rewatchable and hold up extraordinarily well. A sentimental rewatch every year or so. Well worth it.

  • Recently watched the trilogy with my kids (9 and 11). They loved them and I learnt to love them again.

    • +2

I learnt to love them again.

Glad that worked out. Too many children have been disowned for not appreciating the LOTR series.

      • In the bin with them. Try again.

      • +1

Yeah I had previously stopped loving them because they dissed Captain Planet.

  • It is starting to require a bit of a remaster in just a handful of scenes. Still amazing for it's age.

  • No Bluray backup discs included ?

    • No, 3 UHD discs per movie (1 for theatrical release, 2 for extended). 9 UHD discs total.

      • Ah ha .
Can I price match at JB or somewhere ?
This won’t ship to my address .

  • any IMAX releas ?

    • I don't believe LOTR was shot in IMAX.

  • OOS

  • I think I own every other format of LOTR extended and standard so why not 4K…. Get em before they cease making physical media (I hear Disney may have gone that way), you will own nothing and pay multiple streaming services to watch your favorite movies!

  • I ordered 2 and it says on my order page "Delivery date pending" should I be concerned about them cancelling my order?

    • Could go either way. Depends how long you're willing to wait, you'll just have to wait till they get more stock.

      • That sucks when I was on the checkout page it said august 14th and then as soon as I ordered it changed to delivery date pending

  • Owned the DVD version of this.. so makes sense to get 4k version..

  • Is 4k bluray disc quality better than 4k streamed?
    I have ps5, 4k tv and 5.1 system.
Would i notice the difference betwixt this streamed and this from disc¿

    • +2

Is 4k bluray disc quality better than 4k streamed?

Yes - significantly. Essentially FLAC vs MP3

      • You are talking audio. What about video?

        • I'm not up to date on uncompressed video file extensions - it was just an example I thought many might be able to relate to.

  • Out of stock, but now the Hobbit versions are on sale!!

  • I wonder why when it was $42.45 last time, it didn’t garner as much interest as this time.

    • +5

A deal is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to.

    • +1

Probably a lot more people with PS5s to be able to play them on since then (myself included)

  • cant wait to get it, I have never watched a Ultra HD 4K on my setup lol … just whats streamed on Prime and Netflix. Cant wait to see the quality. b

tw what aspect ratio are these? will they fill full 16:9 or will they have black bars at top and bottom?

    • Watches the extended versions first movie last night. I muat say, the extra scenes were nice but aound and quality seemed pretty much same as streamed 4K.

For the price, still nice to own the collection but yeah, it was my first ultra hd 4k movie and I guess expected more.

  • Still stock , but only two off .. my pressssiousess ….

  • Back in stock but only 2 left and hobbit is back in stock but only 1 left
