  • Is this Testra 3G 850MHz model?

    • Nope not Defy+

I've got an ICS rom on this and with all the optimizations I get 720p recording and great battery life !

      • Can you just confirm, only the Defy+ has the 850MHz 3G Band?

I though there was a Defy model that also had 850? at least thats what is says on gsm arena

        HSDPA 900 / 2100, HSDPA 1700 / 2100 or HSDPA 850 / 1900

I just want to know what model this one actually is?

        • EDIT: as floorpie said below this HAS to be the Defy+ !

    • +1

The Motorola Atrix is 850Mhz 3G which is listed for $288. Is the Atrix going to get an official ICS update?

Is the Atrix the MB860 model?

      • Unity1, I think you just made me buy a new phone…, the Motorola Atrix is FAST AS HELL ! and sells on ebay for nearly $250 USED !? LOL

  • +2

According to the jbhifi page it runs android 2.3, which means it is a defy+ (MB526)
    https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
    There was a HSDPA 900 / 2100 version of the MB525 and also a HSDPA 850 / 1900 version sold in Australia.
Not sure about the defy+ but I would assume it's the same so you should probably ask jbhifi.

  • So ok, its a Defy+, but we're still none the wiser as to which 3G bands it supports?

    • +2

If you fancy a pinky swear then, I pinky swear the Defy+ does HSDPA 850Mhz and not HSDPA 900Mhz.

    • It's NOT Defy+

  • it does say Motorola Defy Handset
    on the JB website
can you use this on the optus network?

  • I'd would of preferred the Htc Evo 3D for $299 but $18 delivery fee kills it.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/mobile-phones/mobiles-outrigh…

    • yes, you're right. shipping is ripped off for this kind of factory scoop.

  • I would think that the OS is just as likely (if not more likely) to be wrong as the MB525/MB526, including lack of 'plus'. Also last I knew all MB526s were still exclusive to telstra and could only be purchased directly.

I think it is more likely to be a 900Mhz MB525. The lack of information is pretty bad though.

  • From C-net's review on the Atrix:

4-inch LCD sports a silky smooth-looking qHD pixel resolution (540x960), which helps make text and images look fantastic. It also makes text and icons look tiny, and there's no way to magnify the standard elements on the home screens or in the app drawer. Keen-eyed youngsters should be fine with this, but those with reading glasses might struggle.

    Bugger! Otherwise very tempting.

  • I sent an online enquire about this - it is definitely MB525, so just the regular Defy, NOT MB526, Defy+

    • Hey Geewhizz do you mean you heard back from them confirming it's MB525? Has anyone got anything definite on whether this is 850/2100 or 900/2100?

I also have sent them an online enquiry but havent heard back yet.

      • +1

That's correct Snuffleophegus - the called me back AND emailed me.

        Good Morning,

Thank you for your enquiry. In answer to your question the product is the MB525,

        From C-Net again, the specs:

        http://www.cnet.com.au/motorola-defy_specs-339307513.htm

        • Thanks Geewhiz

        • So now I'm confused. Does this mean it won't work on Telstra?

        • No, it still might, but it is unlikely. Need to know if it is the 850 or 900 model.

        • +2

Just heard back from JB HIFI it's 850MHz/NextG - no good for me but maybe make someone else happy:

          Good afternoon
Our Telco staff have confirmed that the Motorola Defy we stock is on the Telstra nextG frequency.
          Regards

          222/2 Keltie St

        • Thanks guys.

        • Stumo, when you do get it could you please confirm it is the MB525, because I still believe it is the MB526 and that an 850Mhz in the MB525 is non-existant in Aus…, If you do get the MB526 as Bruce clearly mentions below it has its advantages… ;)

        • ok will report back here when it arrives.

  • It is still a good deal even if not MB526. I got a 526, but it really isn't required as the only differences are:
    - Software version
    - CPU clock
    - Battery

The batteries are very cheap anyway and you can just get a better battery for the MB525 if you like. The other two can be solved by non-standard software if you are keen enough.

  • Defy or this? =/ http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/76318
Keep in mind I'm a poor uni student and if I go with the defy I'll be on a cheapy discounted tpg plan.

    or the 3rd option:

Been looking at lots of the MT6577 based phones since on paper they seem like freaking amazing bang for buck. But there's no clear reviews or community for many since it's still so new…

    • China phones use WCDMA so they are not compatible with Aussie 3G networks.

They also have TERRIBLE quality control, so there's also a high chance your phone may have defects, very poor battery life, and very poor firmware.

My recommendation is the Huawei Ascend G300. It's a 4" inch phone with a single core 1ghz processor. Its the best bang for buck phone you can get for $200 dollars.

This phone is good too, although there's a lot SNAFU going on whether it's 850 or 900mhz. TPG uses 900mhz, so keep that in mind.

      • +1

Actually all 3G in Australia is WCDMA (since Telstra's EV-DO was shut down). What won't work here is the Chinese standard TD-SCDMA and CDMA2000/EVDO (common in US). Optus uses 900 and 2100 MHz WCDMA (HSDPA is a high speed data extension to WCDMA) so all Optus resellers (TPG, Amaysim etc) are the same.

  • Question is, these units unlocked?

    • Yes.

On the topic of phone deals how the hell did we miss the Sony Xperia S for $395 last month from allphones???

  • Anyone got one delivered yet to confirm details?

I'm on Floptus (reseller) network so hoping it's the + version!

    • Mine still just says "IN PROGRESS" on their site. Will report back here with details when it arrives.

      • Thanks stumo - I guess the fact that JB are Helstra resellers might give us a hint. In fact thinking back to the Acer Liquid Metal deal that was a Helstra phone too until unlocked.

Otherwise I'm holding out for a killer Galaxy Nexus phone deal(here's hoping).

  • +2

    Ok this has arrived now….

It's MB525 with WCDMA 850/2100 and the box has the nextG and Telstra T on it.

    • Thanks Stumo - Can I use this with Optus? 'phonearena.com' says the Defy does UMTS:900, 1700/2100, 2100 MHz but you mentioned WCDMA 850/2100, i'm confused. Still waiting for mine to arrive, just not sure now if it will work…

      • No, this is the Telstra version, phonearena can't really be relied upon for region specific handsets like these. There is no UMTS 900 or 1700 on this, only UMTS 850/2100, which is what's used by Telstra and I believe vodafone use it now too?

        • Thanks for reporting back stumo - pity it's a Hellstra model. Ah well I'm sure that there will be a few more deals coming up after the IPhone 5 release.

        • So then its locked to Telstra? :-(

        • No its not locked, its just Telstra branded/bloated. But anyway it looks like the sale is over.

I'm seriously unimpressed with this phone. Motoblur is terrible. I might just take it back since I was mislead into believing it was on GB. The invoice says you can take it in to your nearest JB which is handy.

        • What about the $18 delivery, do you think they'll refund that?

          Sorry, whats GB?

        • I think they should, since it was false advertising.

GB is GingerBread - Android 2.3.

        • So it must be running 2.2 then? The add definitely said Android 2.3 (check your order history for the advert, print it and take it with you), that's all you need IMHO.

Ohh well mine arrives tomorrow and my local JB said to bring it in.

So the search starts again, i just want a decent phone under $200, can't be that hard…surely

        • There are custom CM10 JellyBean roms out at XDA forums. Looks promising & usable.
          http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702

Also check yt for some vids.

  • Got my full refund today, including shipping, and they sent a pre-paid label for courier pickup too. I was busy so I had to wait a week before returning it. Can't fault JB customer service on this, they have been great to deal with. Too bad they can't get their facts straight on their website lol.

    • JB's website has a long way to go as regards detail and content. They're certainly taking their time.
