For a split second I thought these were the 560s and nearly urinated

    • +2

These have a higher number so won't it make them better than 560s?

        • To me, they look pretty similar with the 560s being ever so slightly better, but for this price I don't know whether to bite the bullet or not…

          • +2

@Dogstar: If you need or want some good open back headphones, absolutely get this deal.
Not an ATL, but a great bargain regardless.

          • +2

@Dogstar: I have had the HD598 for 15 years, I change the ear pads every 7 years and that's it. Will probably last another 15 years, works perfectly. The HD599 is cut from the same cloth, it will not die and can take plenty of abuse unlike a Hifiman branded headphone where if you look at it wrong… it will stop working.

            • @Dollar Dreamer: I recently changed the earpads on my 598s (got them around 2016) with a pair from Aliexpress and on a pair of 518s I've had since the early 2010s that have been in storage ever since the pads ripped. Both are like new again.

So tempted to impulse buy these but I'll hold off haha.

          • @Dogstar: 560S is better, it's a newer model.

HIFIMAN HE400SE non-Stealth is a better deal than either of these, just not as ideal for competitive gamers specifically for pinpointing direction.

        • RTings comparison beyond tonal measurements (to 10kHz) and phase matching is largely subjective data masquerading as objective scores.

Only thing they cover better or even to the equal of other technical reviews is an assessment of ergonomics and comfort.

Check out Crinacle and the Headphone Show for better coverage.

      • How about the HD555's though? 😅

How many drops were able to escape??

      All aboard the Time Machine!

I was responding to the "Lowest price ever according to Camelx3." part of their post.

I know these are well regarded, but the oval shape and silver highlights just look so damn boomer to me.

    • +11

Your ears aren't oval in shape? :P

      • +7

        Pentagonal ear gang rise up

      • -1

My circular Hifiman cans seem to fit over my oval ears pretty well and look a lot less weird to me.

Anyway, I've triggered the humourless OzB crowd so I'll shut up I guess.

        • +1

I think you insulted the majority of ozb crowd with the boomer reference

    • Don't worry Kmart has the zoomers covered: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/791551

  • very tempted to impulse buy but i already have the 6xx :(

    • Far better headphone aside from imaging.

    • Depends on your use case. The HD599 are better for plugging into a Dualsense or Xbox controller.
They also clamp a lot less.

I love the HD6XX.. but my use case for open back tends to be on the couch with a controller. The rest of the time I tend to stick to IEMs.
Suprising how often I use my HD599’s (even more than my HD560s).

  • I have a logitech g pro x headset and i am looking at getting an open back pair of headphones. Opinions on getting this as my first pair of 'audiophile' headphones. I'm not an expert in the realm of audio. Thanks

    • +2

There's some decent opinions on Reddit. I'm thinking of grabbing these too so doing some reading.

    • +2

Depends, they have rolled off bass which isn't for me, your taste might be different.
6xx from Drop on sale is a well regarded entry point, suggest getting a decent DAC/amp too, I have the iFi Zen Air CAN which goes for around $150 and does what I need for PC based listening.

  • I'm looking for open-back headphones and am fairly new to headphones, is this better value than the AKG K612 PRO (when on sale at the ~$200 mark)?

I will be mostly using it for gaming but looking for an all-rounder. Embarrassingly I'm still using my Grado Alessandro MS-1's which can now legally drink, so wondering how these would compare?

    • +1

Grado is good if you're happy with tonal balance, otherwise I would point you to HIFIMAN (Edition XS, Ananda, Ananda Nano) gear or the Sennheiser 6XX if you're seeking an upgrade, just depends on what technical aspects you crave.

6XX for timbre with separation of notes and more neutral treble, the HIFIMAN gear for everything else.

      • +1

Thanks for the advice, i just received my 6xx and it's a worthy upgrade!

  • +7

one of the only headphones that doesn't hurt my ears and can wear for long time.

    • So comfy. I've had a pair for a year . And another pair for 15 years before that

    • +1

This is it. Beyond everything else these headphones win the endurance prize for me, they sound fantastic, but you can definitely criticise them in that way. But you can’t deny how comfortable they are, 8+ hours and no issues.

  • Picked up a pair of these during Prime Day and sorta hate their sound :(

  • Been using a pair of HD558's for 8 years as main headphones (more recently secondary), but they're a bit dodgy and rattle on low notes. Maybe get these as replacements.

  • I have these and I'm pretty happy with them after applying Oratory1990's EQ. It gives them pretty decent bass without any significant distortion. Oratory1990's EQ

  • Super awesome price and the staff, especially those at the Sydney hifi show a few months ago, are great.

  • Found these to be pretty good for gaming as they are super comfy and spatial awareness is great for shooters. Obviously need a seperate mic if playing multi and want to talk.

Music wise they are ok, certainly not my go to for any serious listening but for casual listening I end up using them due to the comfort.

  • Do these need to be amplified or work ok off say a normal phone for example?

    • Works fine with most devices without an amp. I've used mine with a low-end motherboard and they were plently loud enough and sounded great. Works great with Switch too.

    • Not necessary but an amp does help them show off properly.

  • Well dang, out of stock :/ Perhaps I should get the 560S instead?

    • +1

Or if you not after it for competitive gaming, you can go this option instead for $80 or $120.

      • +1

Appreciate the suggestions. Not into gaming and would be buying for music listening (I’m guessing sound stage and imaging are important here? I listen mainly to rock/funk styles).

I’ve read good things about the 400se phones, would they be comparable to the 599/569S?

        • +1

They walk all over the 599 for detail, separation and tonal balance with better bass and treble extension, and they're still outperforming the 560S in those respects while having less lower treble issues at 30-40% of the price (at least for the non-stealth version). Stage is similarly wide on all three.

Timbre for vocals will be a little behind against the 560S and 599, but overall you're getting a higher fidelity experience while paying less money than either.

If you're not super focused on imaging performance in your headphone - which outside of competitive gaming and super critical listening you're not - it's a great entry level audiophile product.

          • +1

@jasswolf: Thanks for the advice I’ll definitely put them on the short list.

  • Back in stock?
