This 2 Day Sale actually started yesterday but I didn't check my email so apologies if you miss out. Van Dieman's are running a sale on their ever-expanding ink range, the specials expire at midnight tonight.

  • Buy 4 or more inks get 15% off with code 15OFF4INKS
  • Buy 8 or more inks get 20% off with code 20OFF8INKS
  • Buy 12 or more inks get 25% off with code 25OFF12INKS

Plus, for any orders of 10+ inks you qualify for a free 100ml bottle of the limited colour for August, which is also available for sale separately.

They've changed their shipping policies so it's now a graduated series of tiers starting from only $10 for standard domestic.

I often get asked what their ink is like. My quick thoughts:

  • Generally well-behaved in pens, smooth flowing, doesn't suffer nib creep too much.
  • Medium dry time, lefties may want to be careful to avoid smearing.
  • Soaks in well on fountain pen friendly papers.
  • Doesn't feather on most papers.
  • Minimal bleed-through, but some thin papers may show shading with darker colours.

Van Dieman's have also recently released some ink additives which might prove useful. The Diluter & Rehydrator is good for desaturating intensely-colour inks, or for bringing back to life that old bottle of your favourite ink which looks like it's lost some volume and gone too thick. The Ink Wetter is designed for inks that are stubborn and suffer scratchy writing or constant skipping, it improves flow to smooth out your writing.

  • Thanks for the helpful insights!

I have far too many inks already but don’t own any from Van Dieman’s (I think…). Any standouts?

I like shading and sheening inks.

    • I'm usually into deep blue-black. I regularly use their Hanging Lake and Pepperberry in my pen rotation. On my most recent visit to Flywheel in New Norfolk I also picked up the exclusive Type Cabinet Green, which is a great shade that I'm looking forward to trying out soon.

BTW - I don't think there's such a thing as 'too many inks'. I've got far more than I'll ever use in a single lifetime…and I'm okay with that.

    • My current favourites are Black-Tongue Spider Orchid and Wineglass Bay. Gorgeous colours and both offer some shading.

  • I have Van Dieman's Wineglass Bay it's a great colour. Leatherwood Honey is another one I really like.

On the fountain pen side, I've been waiting for sales on TWSBIs but it's hard to come across them…

    • They rarely pop up on sale. I've only bought one TWSBI, and that was from Flywheel when I visited them earlier this year. I got the Diamond 580 with a B nib, and I have to say it's one of the smoothest pens I've ever had. Very nice to write with!

  • Went to have a look at the website, I still don't know what the product is. That website isn't good.
