Sennheiser HD 600 Headphones $399 Delivered @ Sennheiser AU

450

Was looking for some new headphones after struggling with the clamp from my big head vs the DT770s and saw the HD600 was on sale.
Seems like a good deal considering everywhere else has them for like $450-500+
Deal comes direct from sennheiser themselves interestingly enough.

  • 300 ohms. GLHF.

      easy

    • The 300 ohm hd600 is a lot easier to drive than some of those lower impedance and low sensitive cans like the AKG 701/702. In fact it's one of those easier to drive cans in audiophile grade headphones.

  • +2

Almost prefer these over my HD800s. Unreal headphones.

    • +1

      Out of curiosity, why?

      • +3

I think it just speaks to the quality of the HD600's. HD800 have an unbeatable soundstage but at 4-5x the price, HD600's are a no brainer.

  • +11

Great price for an awesome set of monitor headphones, DankPods approved. Unfortunately, my neighbourhoods so noisy it's IEMs or closed backs only for me.

Important note for folks interested in these: they are 300Ω impedance so you will need a decent DAC and Amp with enough power to drive these.

    • +3

Been there with noisy neighbours… white noise machine helps too…

All I can read is hurr durr six hundos

I had this almost 20yrs ago and finally again

May want to consider Sennheiser HD6XX on drop.com right now for $199 USD which works out cheaper than these headphones.

HD6XX is a revision of the HD650 which is slightly better model. They sound and perform similar to each other but I'd pick HD6XX for $320~ AUD vs HD600 for $399.

Also, in before the comments about needing Amp/DAC for these headphones.

      "Tube amps bro."

    • +4

Would agree, got the 6XX 5 years ago and going strong

    • I drive my hd6xx with an audient Evo 4 which is a good affordable amp with XLR mic inputs or whatever it is.

      • In case anyone is reading this thinking it's a headphone amp with mic function, it's not.

It's an XLR interface and mic pre-amp that has a headphone jack, and it's not something you should be buying for the headphone jack, ever.

        • Whatever it is, it drives my hd6xx perfectly fine/loud. I googled other peoples use cases which agreed with that, before buying. Apologies for calling it an amp if its not.

    • I'm just waiting for them to go down to $179USD again! I could use the $10 voucher to get them to $189, but I want to save the $$

      • -1

just signed up to drop.com and beside the US$20 shipping, they've added estimated taxes at US $20.9 as well, wut!

    • Agree, I just ordered the HD 6xx from drop, ~A$350.
Don't forget you have to pay GST so they are a bit more more than $320. Still a lot cheaper than buying in Aus.

You also want an amp for best sound.

Also the clamping force is more on Sennheiser than beyerdydamic.

    • I am not an audiophile but I really want to buy the HD6XX, are there any affordable amps that work well with the HD6XX in particular? One that is commonly used within the community? I have no intention of buying any other headphones after this, if that plays a role in choosing amps at all

Hurrr Durrr Six Hungies per Dankpods.

    Great price for this set!
Also, from my experience, the Senny 600 series has crazy strong clamp, took me few weeks of putting these on few thick books to loosen the clamping power a bit. If anything my Beyers are way more forgiving and comfy for longer listening sesh. YMMV though, different head types and all.

    • You just fully extend the earcups to expose the metal arms, then bend the metal arms with finger pressure.

No messing around clamping books or sports balls required.

      • My point is, if OP had an issue with clamping force on their Beyers, the Senns might not fix that issue. But yes I agree with you, bending the metal will do the job.

  • Worthy upgrade from the 58X?

    • Better of getting a Qudelix 5K DAC/amp and dialing in some EQ. You’ll get a much more prolific increase in sound quality with EQ over a new set of cans

  • 359 very tempting with cashback and welcome10 code…..darn do I need another set of headphones?!

  • +1

    This or the HE 1?

    • +2

      Westpac banker?

  • +1

Surely the focal range is better than this for the price?

    • HD600 + EQ with a Qudelix 5K DAC/amp can’t be beat for under $1500.

      • +7

??? $800 focal clear + qudelix is under 1.5k and will dust the HD600 + qudelix

        • Focal is not so much better. I would buy them tho just for the build quality.

        • What I meant was better sounding than any sub-$1500 cans alone. I haven’t had the chance to play with the Focal clear, though from what I’ve read they require some heavy EQ for a nice frequency response plot, especially in the low and high ends

          • +1

@antik: I went from the 650s to the clears, they definitely don’t need EQ and if anything they’re easier to drive (even sound better out of a phone)

            • +1

@cille745: According to Amir at ASR they leave a lot to be desired, however I’m glad you’re liking them.

              Conclusions
The Focal Clear "out of box" (no EQ) response is closer to what we like to see so tonality is not too bad as is. Equalization can take its performance significantly higher but due to poorly designed drivers with too little headroom, this is not a practical path unless you keep volumes low. Without EQ is less of a problem but you would face some brightness and some lack of clarity. At these prices we better not have such compromises.

I can't recommend the Focal Clear with or without Equalization. I expect more from a company like Focal with incredible vertical integration to build drivers and such.

              • +2

@antik: Amir is a buffoon when it comes to headphone reviews, and his DAC & amp measurements are not only incomplete, but have zero subjective commentary to account for how headphone amp design can impact tonal balance and - more importantly - technical performance.

A DAC can impact both depending on how the music is aliased.

                • @jasswolf: Amir focuses on presenting objective data rather than subjective opinions in his reviews. This is reflected in the name "audio 'science' review," indicating an emphasis on measurable and verifiable information rather than personal preferences or experiences.

                  • +1

@antik: Science implies a rounded and methodical process that covers what the measurements fail to express and discusses how to improve in future analysis. The site name is misleading, and it's regularly mentioned that subjective analysis is required - but not to be found on ASR - by many members.

What can be objectively measured today still tells too little of the story because you're not listening to test tones. We call the rest subjective because we're not using direct measurement data, yet our ears are still some of the best tools for analysing what's happening.

                    • +2

@jasswolf: @jasswolf I believe we've disagreed about headphone stuff previously, but I totally agree on this.

Amir is a total clown who feeds snake oil under the guise of 'objective science' to a credulous audience.

He measures things inconsistently, he measures things that don't matter, he has been pulled up numerous times for misunderstanding and misrepresenting his own measurements.

And he's on video asking the company rep for his fancy measuring gear for 'one button to make everything easier'. The rep tries to hide his reaction, but you can tell that he's totally flabbergasted by the request.

ASR is a great example of popularlism on the internet making everything generally a bit dumber.

                • @jasswolf: I dunno, I think the scientific approach is good for comparison sake for all gear reviews as a starting point. It's a common baseline otherwise all you get are anecdotal claims and options. It's a clinical approach and music is emotional but better testing than most other sites and methods.

Totally agree people should audition for themselves and see what works (which is actually easy to do with Amazon, or at your local hi-fi store for speakers).

It does annoy me the level those ASR guys go to those, they base too much on his every world and regurgitate the same stuff about these budget chi-fi brand (which a lot happen to be quite good but not without a few quirks).

I don't mind a little EQ at times depending on the gear - my Yuin pk1 buds sound a lot better with the wavelet preset which my AliExpress USB C DAC cable has detected:).

Likewise I've played around with the levels on the XM5s, which was a combination of people's recommended settings. Otherwise I leave everything flat EQ and bit perfect with home equipment.

                  • @G-rig: I'm not suggesting all measurements are pointless, simply they need further context and subjective commentary.

THD+N charts are completely useless though.

                    • +1

@jasswolf: Too easy, those guys go a bit far chasing utopia and base everything on the measurements lol.

Edit: I think signal to noise ratio and sensitivity makes more difference for speakers.

PS.looking forward to the 6XX hopefully turn up his week.

    • Depends. If reliability, customer support and parts availability are at all important, I'd stick with Senns. You can buy literally every single part of the 600 or 650, enough to build a new set of headphones.

Versus the well known Focal very French "FU" approach to customer service.

  • Crazy to think I bought these for $399USD in 2014 (~$750 after currency and inflation is taken into account!).

They’re great headphones and have held up well. I still use them daily.

  • +3

Just get the focal clear at 799, buy once cry once

  • How are these for day to day use and gaming? Worthy upgrade from HD599?

    • Are you unhappy with the HD599s?

      • Not at all, absolutely love them tbh, they are just getting tired after about 7 or so years

  • Great price

  • How do these hold up against the HD58x>?
