Have I Been Scammed? Facebook Marketplace Sold Item, Came to My House & PayID Was Done Whilst I Watched! UPDATED: 28 August

Bit of a weird one and I am thinking i have been scammed but it seems different to all the ones that i have seen.

Details:

  • advertised on Facebook Marketplace on Sunday to sell my Apple Studio Display monitor
  • get a Facebook message from someone saying he would like to buy but asks for best price - i knock off $100 - and he agrees to the price
  • he says he will pick it up and asks best way to pay - i tell him direct bank deposit please - he says ok
  • he turns up on Tuesday this week and is a nice guy - we have a long chat about Teslas and him working for Star City Casino as a Supervisor there
  • tells me he lives in Homebush
  • well dressed etc (not sure that means anything but still)
  • he shows me his CBA app and him paying me by Payid and then he sends me the receipt right away by text where it shows his CBA bsb and account number. It is the EXACT receipt screen shot for a Payid payment - i literally saw him do it on his CBA app
  • the money doesn't go through straight away but the receipt does say it takes 24 hours to go through for accounts that are not known - i am ok with that
  • we chat more - he tells me about his brother and about his computers etc
  • he leaves with my Apple Studio Display
  • he texts me a few hours later asking if i can send him the receipt for when i bought the display - i say no problems and send it
  • i then contact him after 24 hours and tell him i haven't received the payment - he texts back saying it is 'pending' on his side
  • however since yesterday afternoon he is now uncontactable - if i ring his number it is always engaged and no text messages back since yesterday lunchtime and no money in my account
  • his Facebook profile i now cannot see - he may have blocked me maybe?

Is this a scam? It just seems different to the ones where it is me having to pay money etc. And it also seems strange he would come to my house and show me his CBA app and the receipt with his account details. What about if he got to my house and i didn't sell it because the money didn't get through straight away? There just seems so many ways this could have gone wrong for him if it is indeed a scam which seems like it probably is.

So i guess it is a scam?

EDIT:

This is the Payid CBA receipt i got:

UPDATE 28 August:

Another poster was scammed the same way using the same type of receipt by the mysterious 'Deon Hong' on Saturday.

This guy … I wonder how many others he has scammed?

This is the Payid receipt that the other poster got:

https://ibb.co/cCcS6L8

These are the receipts side by side:

https://ibb.co/gZXxf7c

Mine is on the right

What we do know now:

-somehow he makes up the Payid on the spot which is pretty good for him to do that! Bravo Deon!!
-the other poster got his rego
-the other poster went to cops - I will go to cops tomorrow
-it could just be high end Mac goods?
-goes by Deon Hong on FB
-uses a photo of squid game actor

Questions now are:

-are even his account details correct as per those Payid screenshots? If he is creating the Payid receipts then why would you put your own account details?
-is his mobile number correct? REMOVED
-his rego number is possibly the only actual identifier of this person

UPDATE 30 AUGUST

We're closing in!

Third victim now who has video footage.

Deon - we are coming for you!

UPDATE 13 SEPT

We got him!

'Deon' was charged and arrested yesterday. Bail refused.

Thanks to all the victims who provided valuable identifying information to the police.

Podcast and Netflix doco to come…

  • I do a bit of gumtree and fbm. Cba payid i avoid. I tend to avoid all payid unless the vibe is right and cash come thru instqnt in my account

  • it takes 24 hours to go through for accounts that are not known - i am ok with that

    hehe

    COD only

  • +1

I had someone do this to me for a $60 power supply years ago. I actually met him at his work and he showed me the receipt (scheduled payment which was canceled)
Unfortunately his work was like Fort Knox so had no way to get in and chase him up.
Unbelievable to scam someone for $60 😒

  • Scamming fraud dishonesty is on the Rise, WHY. because of low lifes they dont want to work,
all they do is scam on f/b, gumtree, impersonate banks ATO aust post couriers and other businesses etc
to scam people, theirs numerous scams - be warned.
    CASH IS KING

  • Good to see even scammers are following the barefoot steps.

  • +8

We can blame CBA for this, 100%. Holding for 24 hours is just an excuse to allow them to earn interest (Assuming funds leave payer’s account). It defeats the purpose of PayID / Osko.

FYI I sold a car ($7k) to someone who paid via CBA PayID / Osko. The payment landed in my account exactly 24 hours later (to the minute). I was aware of the risk so took photo of buyer + license.

Question: has anyone cancelled a CBA payment within the 24h window? How hard is it? Can you do it from within the app or do you need to call? Do the funds leave your account at time of payment request or only when the payment goes through? (If the latter, then you could just empty your account before the 24h deadline and force payment to fail)…

    • +2

What's your payid? I'll send you a few dollars to test it out.

    • +1

Actually, CBA holding the payment for 24 hours worked in my favor a big time. I booked 3 tickets to Peru in 2022 via a travel agent and transferred sum of ~$3000 via CBA. After a while, upon one of my friends suggestion, checked online and got to know if I book one way tickets for both the routes, it's ~500 cheaper. Called CBA and cancelled the pending payment.

    • +1

I was buying property recently and didnt realise this was a thing, i had to transfer funds from another account and was able to easily cancel the transfer online.

    • +1

My friend once sent me money via CBA payid. She sent to the wrong mobile number. She called CBA back within 15 min as I didnt receive money. CBA reversed the transaction without asking too many questions.

  • if i ring his number it is always engaged

They have obviously blocked your number.

    • -1

or they are a very busy person

  • +1

Always do a $1 transaction as a test. If that works instantly the other amount should work as well due to the previous transaction.

    • Actually it doesn't always
This is what I did to one of my own bank accounts (ubank pain of new style accounts)

First $1 went straight through. For next one I got a confirmation prompt which I approved, then nothing
      I phoned both banks
Ubank said nothing received - nothing to do with us
My bank said it was processed, nothing to do with us, money is gone

24 hours later it came through. Apparently oska put a block on it
What a joke, banks deny all knowledge, no way of contacting oska even with transaction number

  • +2

CBA can be very annoying holding transactions over a certain amount or to new payees for a few days, the acount holder can cancel it at anytime unfortuantly.

The fact he has blocked you suggest he has cancelled it, i would send him a message saying you have not received the payment, you have 24hours to pay or drop back the monitor, then maybe go to the Police and hopefully they are not busy and you get someone willing to help settle what sounds like a civil problem.

Other then that there is not much you can do without hiring bikies….

  • +2

Sorry to hear this happened. Your best bet now is to:

    1. Search for similar listings in FBMP and Gumtree in and around your area and try to contact the seller from a different phone/account.
    2. File a police complaint in parallel
    3. Take it from there if you find the item from step 1.
  • Mate! Just noticed that selection box on the right hand corner of the screenshot! It’s the right size as the payID, and looks like he forgot to remove while screenshotting the image editor. Is it from the original screenshot he sent? Are you sure you saw him transferring using the commbank app after he showed you the app first time?

This is why I do not recommend using the phone number as payid, it’s easy for people to scam. They could create the receipt in advance, and if they feel a bit adventurous, they could even do a sim swap by collecting your publicly available info online!

    • The selection box could also be from OP when they removed their personal information.

The screenshot also has date and time so there's no way or at least nearly impossible to hack it on the spot in front of OP.

  • -4

Usually PayID is immediate. Even for a new account, the amount shows up under "Account balance" but doesn't show under "Available balance". Most likely scammed. Always go for cash in these circumstances. Best to report to police. Would be even better if you have CCTV footage of the crooks with their faces in view.

  • You've got his BSB and account number on the screenshot… not sure what can be done with that.

    • +5

OP can send money to the scammers account. Niiiice.

      • +10

OP can sign them up for multiple gym memberships. Ultimate revenge.

  • the money doesn't go through straight away but the receipt does say it takes 24 hours to go through for accounts that are not known - i am ok with that

This is your mistake. PayID has internal limits to potentially stop large transfers done either by mistake or some other reasons for online payments and payid. During this hold up they can potentially ring up and cancel the payment. Should have been fully transparent with the buyer that payid or not you must have funds cleared on your account (not their account stating pending or sent or whatever). Expensive mistake but oh well…

PayID is secure in the sense that once you get your funds they cannot revert it. So it's good as cash.

I sell on marketplace as well and am very clear on the transaction terms, cash or payid with funds cleared on my account before handing over the goods, period!

  • scam. ALWAYS GET CASH MONEY

  • What's with the edit box on the receipt?

    • Yes sorry that was me when I did the screenshot.

      • Hmmm did it clear or was it a next level Photoshop or schedule payment and cancelled? Did you figure it out?

        • Hasn't cleared so far! Can't see it clearing now. I even phoned from my wife's phone and it just constantly the number if switched off. Will go to cops - but unlikely they can do much.

  • -4

That receipt is obviously photoshopped. I use the CBA app and the Osko logo has a transparent background. What is that text box field in the top right too>

I once had a similar situation selling a graphics tablet for around $1500. The guy drove 3 hours, watched him like a hawk send me the money and it ended up being held for 24h. When I didn't get the money instantly, I just took a picture of his license and asked if that was his current address.

  • Watched someone do to the same scam to my GF, they used CBA as well. Normally would say no to payID, but it was such a low value item ~40$

  • Cash is king in these things…..

  • Oh spare me, pass the popcorn I just love these marketplace/facebook thingys……………LOLZ

  • +3

The golden rule: do not hand the item to anyone until you have full amount of money on your account or cash.

They could be a nicest person and be very convincing but …. no money no item, full stop. Please come back tomorrow and pick it up once the payment is cleared

  • +1

That's why I only accept iTunes giftcard as payment 😛

    • +6

ATO rep has entered the chat.

  • Consider this for a moment, many scammers are charming, well dressed and well spoken…many good people are not charming, poorly dressed and have terrible speech. You could've had the same standard if it was a ugly rude mf because you do not intend to be in a long term relationship with this dude.

    • +2

Agree with all this but what does he get? A monitor! He doesn't get cash. It's just a strange, weird scam with a small benefit but a large risk.

      • +1

Check gumtree for a similar monitor :)

  • +1

I never ever accept payid. cash only. Some buyers always give me the spill about not having cash on them and I tell them there are tons of ATMs around.

    • They just want to use payid with CBA to scam you

    • I accept payid but can only meet after cleared payment.

  • Sold an 800 dollar item to a dodgy looking guy (asked him to come to my work rather than home) and didn;t let him leave until the payment cleared. Thought he was going to do a runner when the payment didn't arrive. Apprarently it god blocked by CBA and he had to call them to clear it.

Sold a car part payid, still the payment didn't arrive. He did it infornt of me, But I let the guy go since I had a photo of his licence and the payment came in about 15 mins later.

Once made a ~ 12k payment to a car delaer westpac app to cba account - it cleared instantly. And the dealer didn't have any issues of it being cleared or not as long as I did the transfer in front of him.

How quickly it clears varies a lot between banks. I'd assume that the payment is blocked somewhere and will clear eventually.

    • Sold a car part payid, still the payment didn't arrive. He did it infornt of me, But I let the guy go since I had a photo of his licence and the payment came in about 15 mins later.

Similar here. Sold a car (not part) for about $4k. The guy had already sent me a deposit a few days before, and I'd copied down his details from his licence for the receipt & transfer docs etc. Watched him do the payment on his laptop (lol) since he didn't have a phone/payID. It didn't clear right away but in that situation I was fairly comfortable he was legit. Came through 24h later.

    • +1

The difference with the car dealership is that they can afford a lawyer

  • Payment through Pay ID has always been instant for me, done through Osko.
I would say you've been scammed.
Report the item(s) as stolen if no funds after 3 business days.

    • +3

I'm with CBA - transactions to new accounts have a 24 hold put on them.

  • Likely a scam from the point where you noted funds not in your account after 1 day and him ghosting you. I don’t do transfers cash only which they can arrange on the way to pick it up. Osko and Payid aren’t reliable enough to do on pick up as even Osko won’t clear straight away and can be held for security clearance even if it’s legit

  • +6

PAYID is for friends transferring you cash for dinner, tickets etc…. not for strangers.

    CASH ONLY!

  • Check marketplace to see if he’s put it up for sale, ask him his best price.

    • Ha yep i keep checking FB marketplace and Gumtree and nothing … yet …

  • +4

Just a heads up. CBA PayID is NEVER instant for the first transaction to a new recipient. This is due to a security check they for any new PayID recipients on the first transaction. Because of this, it will actually take longer than a regular transfer due to the process they go through. I know this because i have many friends who'd PayID'd me from CBA after splitting a dinner bill.

Every time one of them pays me the first time, it takes 3-5 days for me to get the money, longer than an actual bank transfer

This is why i never accept PayID from a CBA bank account with any sale.

This is normal, you should see your money next week.

    From CBA website:
" 1 For security reasons, a hold may apply on first time payments. The delay allows fraud security checks to take place and gives you time to alert us to unauthorised or suspicious activity on your account. Subsequent payments should be received in under a minute."

    • I certainly hope so but coupled with him ghosting me - phone is now switched off and i cannot access his FB profile - i dunno!

      • Think positive. The ghosting may just be he doesn't really like you, he just wanted the monitor, and a $100 of, at that.

Next time cash only, full price, FTW

    • Nice to know. So then strangers basically use this loophole and pretend they transfer to you and then cancel under CBA payid. Meanwhile take your goods and don't turn up themselves but have someone else who isn't actually the person dealing with.

      Fully know this scam now.

They might pretend to have paid you and give you a screenshot on the app but the screenshot can be fake and even if it's legit it will just show paid but CBA actually holds the funds and within 24 hours will cancel and already taken your goods

I recently wanted to sell a cot within 10 mins of posting two scammers with payid attempt to use similar method to scam me.

They dare not to show up themselves and send someone to collect goods even wanted my address

I gave none of that and refuse don't use Payid they immediately backed off not a single word

I also think they hacked into other peoples Facebook accounts to do this

Sounds like eBay is still the way to go with eBay plus save fees and if you can find a buyer that is

  • i had someone buy a car from me the other day, told them i will not give you the car until i see the money in my account. they said ok, they transferred, money came through, they came and collected the car. moral of the story, cash or money in account, nothing else.

    • Even money into your account isn't safe. Transfers from one bank (CBA maybe?) shows in your account because they "trust" their customers and transfer the funds immediately. But hours later they find their customer "made a mistake" so the bank pulls the funds back again. CASH ONLY unless you hold onto the item for 2-3 days, because I think whichever bank it is pulls back any fake payments within 24 hours. The bank's rush to make it APPEAR they do money transfers fast is facilitating crime.

      • 24 hrs, sorry i forgot to mention that, it was in the account for over 24 hrs, another immediate way to do it is to both go to the bank and do a bank cheque in person. there is no other way, dont fall for the scams

      • nah, doesn't work that way mate, once the money leave your account you will go through hell bends to get it reverse. The situation you described was people using ATM to deposit a bogus cheque into your account and the money will so as pending until the bank cashier actually get the cheque from said ATM and found out it was invalid, then your pending will be reversed.

      • This is BS. It’s very hard to reverse the money, close to impossible without receipient agree to it. Even with court order they can only freeze the fund not take it back.

          • @[Deactivated]: Unless you have done it in person don’t trust what people wrote. Try to cancel a payid transfer and let us know if it is even possible lol

        • It's VERY easy to reverse. But I'm not to post the various ways it's possible on here. The T&Cs of the banks will generally clue you into 2 common ways.

  • +7

If they can drive to you to pick the item up, and can do a bank transfer on the spot, then they can also stop at an ATM on the way over. When are people going to learn to stop accepting this Pay ID. I've never seen anyone wanting to use Pay ID that WASN'T a scam.

    • I hardly use cash any more, I'd rather be paid via EFT. I'd also rather give my mobile or email to a random stranger than my bank account details.

The problem is the banks delaying supposedly instant transfers. It should work like cash. You hand it over, that's it. No cancelling or reversing.
It shows you the recipients name so you can verify it's the right person before sending in case of a typo. As far as protecting against scams, I don't even know how much a 24 hour delay helps. I'm guessing in most cases by the time the scammee realises it's after 24 hours anyway.

I've accepted PayID multiple times before without issue, admittedly though not for very high value items (only once it might have ended badly, but only because I let the goods go as I mentioned in comment below).

I've haven't heard much about PayID scammers that actually come to collect goods. Usually they just send fake screenshots and say you need to upgrade to a business account to receive your money. Similar to before, except it used to be PayPal.

I think it's fine to accept PayID but just be clear upfront that until payment lands no goods are taken.

    • Never is extreme. I use it all the time and get paid by strangers all the time, including large amounts. Stick to the obvious rule of no exchange until money is in the account.

  • Did he check & inspect the monitor? Usually scammers want to be in and out quickly.

    • Yes! We had a good chat about it. We spoke for probably 15 mins. Just so strange.

      • +2

OP, you also have his email address because you emailed him the receipt.
You could register his email at some websites until you get your money's worth!

        • -1

and order pizzas to his phone/email.

        • No i sent him the receipt by text unfortunately

  • +1

Not sure if this is said already by someone else, but banks typically allow certain payments to be cancelled within certain timeframe as mistaken transfers or scams.

A payment via PAYID could be legit but it can be cancelled by ringing up the bank.

For anyone looking to sell things privately cash is the way to go, if the price is too much for cash then you should ask for bank cheques paid to your legal name.

  • +1

I would be reporting serial numbers to the police incase they try to hock it. Could even let Apple or whoever you purchased it from that it is stolen and if they try to return or do a warranty claim with the monitor, it will be flagged.

  • Why would it be so hard to just bring cash and pay? Anything else is a no go…unless its bitcoin (send, verify in wallet and bye lol)

    • -2

Large amounts can be a PITA. ATMs have a max limit also charges you at least $2 fee per withdraw

      • +1

The current situation sounds like a bigger PIA to me.

        • +1

Anything will be a bigger PIA if you don’t verify the transfer.

  • I had a sale on MP not too long ago, only $40 and guy asked to use PayID. I know some banks delay and usually if that happens I would not let the goods go.

He paid from Westpac in front of me, of course didn't arrive instantly. From memory he did ask if I wanted him to come back to pick up, or if I wanted to take photos of his license and if didn't arrive he would bring me cash later.

The back story was he drives a truck, had to go home to drop off truck then take his car to go to get cash out as it's a PITA taking truck to shopping centre. Asked if PayID was ok then he could drop past in the truck instead on his way home (which he did). Against my normal rules, I took photos of license and let him take the goods (since wasn't high value or anything really scam worthy, it all seemed pretty legit).

Unfortunately our stories end differently. Pretty much 24 hours later to the second, I got notification that money had arrived in my account. Messaged him to say it had arrived, he was apologetic for the delay.

To be honest, up until the point you said you can't see his profile any more which is almost certainly because he blocked you (do you get an error trying to send another message from your inital chat?), it seemed like it still could have been the bank delaying. I don't think a PayID transfer should take more than 24 hours though so whether it was the initial intention or not, it seems likely the transaction was cancelled.

  • I had to transfer money to a friend of mine. CBA to CBA, it took 3-4 days for it to clear. Which was really weird. A small amount too, $100.

Also the PayID looks pretty legit.

So I would say just wait a bit longer.

It is suspicious he isn't picking up your calls. The only thing I can think of is after you gave him the monitor he thought he would try to be clever and called the bank to cancel his transaction. The 24 hour system for new transfers is in place for security so it is logical that you can cancel it over the phone and claim you got hacked or scammed.

    Edit:
The more I think about it, the more the above scenario sounds plausible. His had the intent to pay but his realized he has an avenue to cancel it and save the money so his taken this option.

    • +1

no way bro .. he was either a scammer or not .. nobody is going to turn into a scammer like that with a quick change of mind.

  • +2

If someone is paying me with PayID, I don't give them the item until it's cleared IN my bank account. Tough luck if it's pending, come back the next day. No one scamming me.

I had one guy send me an email saying, you need to send me $500 to release the funds LOL LOL, nice try loser.

  • Give it couple more days, it “may” clear. I was in the same situation before where they did payID if front of me and it took 5 days for the money to show up in my account. But I took extra measures, I took pictures of the car they came with, took pictures of Drivers licence, and from their phone they had to send me a text saying they paid with PayID and took the item when the money has not shown yet.

    • This is dumb advice
Even if you knew where the person lived. What would you do.?? Legal action ? Police? Most of that will go no where. Just pay strangers with cash.

Cash only when you're paying a stranger.

      • A scammer is less likely to agree to having their drivers license photographed. Won’t guarantee anything, but surely helps.

  • +2

I’m with the OP. I know it’s $800 but why people are turning so nasty in Australia just for $800.

Can imagine an overseas scamming ring going after thousands of people and making a large sum somehow. But in this case, the guy put so much effort and taking risk for $800. If he will try to sell, he might not even get $800 for the monitor.

PayID is a nice change in Australia for quick money transfer. But after hearing such stories, who would trust even for $50 anymore.

  • -3

Yeah its a scam. PayId is realtime and will show in your account in less than a minute.

    • +1

CBA will hold a payID transfer to a new account for ~24 hours.
