Have I Been Scammed? Facebook Marketplace Sold Item, Came to My House & PayID Was Done Whilst I Watched! UPDATED: 28 August

Bit of a weird one and I am thinking i have been scammed but it seems different to all the ones that i have seen.

Details:

  • advertised on Facebook Marketplace on Sunday to sell my Apple Studio Display monitor
  • get a Facebook message from someone saying he would like to buy but asks for best price - i knock off $100 - and he agrees to the price
  • he says he will pick it up and asks best way to pay - i tell him direct bank deposit please - he says ok
  • he turns up on Tuesday this week and is a nice guy - we have a long chat about Teslas and him working for Star City Casino as a Supervisor there
  • tells me he lives in Homebush
  • well dressed etc (not sure that means anything but still)
  • he shows me his CBA app and him paying me by Payid and then he sends me the receipt right away by text where it shows his CBA bsb and account number. It is the EXACT receipt screen shot for a Payid payment - i literally saw him do it on his CBA app
  • the money doesn't go through straight away but the receipt does say it takes 24 hours to go through for accounts that are not known - i am ok with that
  • we chat more - he tells me about his brother and about his computers etc
  • he leaves with my Apple Studio Display
  • he texts me a few hours later asking if i can send him the receipt for when i bought the display - i say no problems and send it
  • i then contact him after 24 hours and tell him i haven't received the payment - he texts back saying it is 'pending' on his side
  • however since yesterday afternoon he is now uncontactable - if i ring his number it is always engaged and no text messages back since yesterday lunchtime and no money in my account
  • his Facebook profile i now cannot see - he may have blocked me maybe?

Is this a scam? It just seems different to the ones where it is me having to pay money etc. And it also seems strange he would come to my house and show me his CBA app and the receipt with his account details. What about if he got to my house and i didn't sell it because the money didn't get through straight away? There just seems so many ways this could have gone wrong for him if it is indeed a scam which seems like it probably is.

So i guess it is a scam?

EDIT:

This is the Payid CBA receipt i got:

https://ibb.co/jVhVD1Z

UPDATE 28 August:

Another poster was scammed the same way using the same type of receipt by the mysterious 'Deon Hong' on Saturday.

This guy … I wonder how many others he has scammed?

This is the Payid receipt that the other poster got:

https://ibb.co/cCcS6L8

These are the receipts side by side:

https://ibb.co/gZXxf7c

Mine is on the right

What we do know now:

-somehow he makes up the Payid on the spot which is pretty good for him to do that! Bravo Deon!!
-the other poster got his rego
-the other poster went to cops - I will go to cops tomorrow
-it could just be high end Mac goods?
-goes by Deon Hong on FB
-uses a photo of squid game actor

Questions now are:

-are even his account details correct as per those Payid screenshots? If he is creating the Payid receipts then why would you put your own account details?
-is his mobile number correct? REMOVED
-his rego number is possibly the only actual identifier of this person

UPDATE 30 AUGUST

We're closing in!

Third victim now who has video footage.

Deon - we are coming for you!

UPDATE 13 SEPT

We got him!

'Deon' was charged and arrested yesterday. Bail refused.

Thanks to all the victims who provided valuable identifying information to the police.

Podcast and Netflix doco to come…

i’m surprised the cops got involved, wouldn’t it be a civil claim ?

      • +3

Why? It's theft and fraud - both criminal offences. Thief's excuses should have been for a judge to consider, not a police officer.

        • +1

Yes, I had the option to take him to the small claims court or something like that. I backed off as it wasn't worth the cost and effort compared the the value of the item. I didn't want him coming back and throwing a molotov at my house either….

        • +1

yes you would think so but cops make the decisions first , if they can’t be bothered doing paperwork well sorry your complaint isn’t even going to be looked at

      • +5

The cops got involved initially, as it could of been theft and fraud. But when he said/showed he had an intent to pay (through a scheduled transfer) then that suddenly becomes a civil issue.

And his explanation for cancelling it was because the saw apparantly didn't work. (But I know it did cause it was tested right infront of him).

      • Concrete saw, so might be expensive.

  • +11

he turns up on Tuesday this week and is a nice guy - we have a long chat about Teslas and him working for Star City Casino as a Supervisor there
tells me he lives in Homebush
well dressed etc (not sure that means anything but still)

This is what we call social engineering, it made you more comfortable with the situation and you accepted the fraudulent/reversable payment, or trusted that what he was doing in the CBA app was paying you (it was probably a future transfer).

So i guess it is a scam?

Yes it is. CBA in my experience does have a 24 hour wait policy on >$100 payments through PayID BUT this has been 48 hours as you said.

  • +10

    Have I Been Scammed?

    cash only, no exceptions…

    • You've still got a problem with counterfeit cash and dog murderers

I personally find the problems are related to product category not payment methods.

i.e. used apple products (99% scammers) but furniture is trouble free.

      • +1

used apple products (99% scammers) but furniture is trouble free.

        Now I'm confused…

        • +3

Is that the new iChair Ultra Pro Max Deluxe 32SE Wood Edition?

          • +3

@McFly: Yes, it uses iOSit 3.1

      • Apple products hold their value the most and are the easiest to resell.

    • Why not payId once it's in your account?

      • +1

….because the buyer might think you are scamming them when you disappear with their money and they don't have the goods.

        • +2

That's the buyer's problem, if they've insisted on payid rather than cash.

  • +2

Why didnt you ask for Cash…? Gumtree and FB sales are ideally Cash or nothing.

  • If you are both not with the same bank, then it can take two business days to process.
    Good luck.

  • Wait a few more days. New payID actually take a bit to transfer. The instant part is only for previously paid recipient.

    • -4

      Is that you scammer?

Pay ID is instant that is the whole point of it.

      • +10

Certain banks cough CBA cough hold PayID transfers to new accounts for 24 hours, totally defeating the purpose of an "instant" transaction.

  • +16

If you have a face to face interaction why would you accept anything less than cash on pickup ? It defeats the purpose of doing this in the first place.

    • +3

i've done this a few times. The face to face is about inspecting the item and agreeing a price. I then make the payment via PayID. If the seller can't confirm receipt the payment is on 24-hour hold so I simply return the next day to collect.

      • +5

You're very trusting. Hope you're not posting a thread down the track.

      • +2

And what happens the next day when no-one is home?

        • +3

Of course I risk-assessed the likelihood they would have vacated in 24-hours. One was a vacuum cleaner from an elderly couple living in a retirement village, the other a massage chair from a high-end property in a gated community.

        • A brick goes sailing through the window.

    • +2

Saves time going to the atm.

  • +4

Does not sound like a scam to me. Why would he ask for the receipt after and have all that convo? I think it should come through, but usually I ask for OSKO payment only, and transfer $1 first to ensure it goes through

    • +7

      pro conman ?

    • +6

More successful when he resells. Scammer gains free money.

    • Is OSKO and PayID linked? So even for first time payer on PayID will it still be instant if you both have OSKO?

      • +2

Osko by BPAY® is the payment processor. PayID is your unique indentifier for Osko payments. I'm with CBA - first-time payees receive instant payment for transactions under $500

        • +2

under $500? most people on the forum are saying anything over $100!

Also, Osko is an overlay service on top of NPP with PayID being part of NPP, not unique to OSKO per se.

          • +1

@buckerooni: All of my $0–500 payments so far have been instant (Gumtree purchases), anything over took 24-hours.

    • I always do this too…
No reason for "new account details" pending..

    • "Look officer he even sent through the receipt of the transfer".

  • You must be new here FFS.

    • +6

Too right, I just don't understand, how do you make such a decision.

If someone I don't know wants to come and buy something from me, they get told to bring cash. No they can't have my bank details. No they can't have a number linked to my account by some crowd I don't trust. No cash, goto ATM. End of story.

Why would anyone accept proof of payment, on
      - someone else's device, and/or over the Internet
      - a transaction on someone else's bank website (or a hoax site)
      - a digital proof of payment (arrangement of pixels easily faked in a myriad of ways)

Not one of the above can be trusted. It's the Internet! Nothing can be trusted, Nothing, esp. anything to do with Mark Zuckerberg, finance, government.

Too many fools and horses, let alone corrupt white-collar types and criminals in finance and government to change the above, ever. Let alone in anything else to to do with money.

This is why we have cash.

With so many internet natives so keen to avoid it, we (the peasants) are beginning to deserve to have it taken away from us.

      • Government has 100% control over your cash though

Besides, counterfeit cash is definitely at thing

  • Might be safer to ask for a deposit to be sent a day in advance.

Whether it is a scam or not: seems a lot of trouble vs a monitor. I'd wait a couple more days and worry come Tuesday.

  • and this thread is exactly why I don't accept PayID. Cash or Direct Bank Transfer and once money is received, I will hand over the product. No money in my position (digital or physical), no product.

  • +14

    another reason to…

say no to a cashless society

  • +4

Cba could be the culprit here. Holding the money for a few days. But then he could still intervene by cancelling the payment.

Check if he has blocked you by using other accounts.

  • +9

Call him off another phone number. If it rings, that means he has blocked you.

He has most likely cancelled the payment.

Why wouldn't you just tell him to go withdrawal cash before he came ?

  • If he was above board he would have taken a screen shot of the transaction in his CBA app when you contacted him to ask about the payment not showing,

    • does cba app allow you to do screenshot? bankwest app doesnt.

      • -2

Screenshot is done through the phone, doesn’t need the bank app.

        • +2

Bankwest app blocks both the physical button and notification shade.

          Most other bank apps don't.

  • If it’s not in your account while you’re both at the door, it won’t come through, he could have used a fake app with fake details too.

Have had this tried on me a lot where people forget to bring cash and never return

    • If it’s not in your account while you’re both at the door, it won’t come through

CBA and some banks are known to put a hold 24 hour hold Osko payments for new payers.

  • +1

As this is effectively theft, you can report it to NSW police. Any chance you have an image of the perp from your home security camera? And a rego plate from a camera in your 'hood?

    • No i don't unfortunately have an image which would have helped. I will go to the police - not sure they will do much to be honest.

      • +5

When you need to report a ‘Fail to Pay’ you should complete a Fraud Report. This includes reporting for insurance purposes. The NSW Police Force define ‘Fail to Pay’ as where person(s) have used deceptive, dishonest, corrupt or unethical behaviour, to obtain money, goods or services from you.

  • Payid receipt i got:

    https://ibb.co/jVhVD1Z

Seems a lot of trouble to go through for a monitor but no other way to explain it other than being a scam.

    • The money was sent from a CBA account, so they won't assist with a fraudulent Osko reversal?

    • -1

      Scheduled.

      • how can you tell?

        • +1

          Previously used CBA .

Check the send email receipt box and scheduled payments look like that.
Completed payments haved osko transaction ID

Maybe someone with current CBA access can comment on current app

          • @randomusername2017: thanks i see. so op has been scammed.

it seems some banks allow for a scheduled payid payment and some dont.

            • @PissLUR: Maybe I'm mistaken.
Not 100% certain it was PayID.
              Email confirmation looks the same.

Hopefully it's just the usual CBA delay and payment is received.

          • +1

@randomusername2017: Friend transferred me from CBA and it looked like that without osko id. It went through almost instantly even when it was the 1st transfer.

            • @rave75: Payment under $500 should still be instant for first transfer. I guess this is over $500?

    • It looks ok. Just have to wait a couple of days for it to clear. Especially if new payer/payee.

    • +1

Checked a few recent CBA transfers via App. Others might be able to confirm

The to on the 2nd line on our screenshot was on the 1st line on mine.

      Yours:
      Paid $1234
      To

      Mine:
      Paid $1234 to

      • Could that be a line wrap issue with a smaller screen depth?

  • +1

Another great read, consider it a great donation to charity, always always always cash in hand it's really just that simple !

    • I think if over $500 and a new payee… it’s 24hrs+

  • Yeah you’ve been scammed. I never give any goods until the money is in my bank. Even then I’ve heard some can reverse it but not sure how they could?

  • cash payment is the best way.

  • Its been reversed. Its gone… I had someone collect a scooter via pay ID and they said they had CBA.
When they did it in front of me it WAS put on hold but we had agreed if it did they would come back the day after and collect.

24 hours to the second it cleared into my bank and they came picked it up. No CBA for direct pay ID pickups i afraid.

  • Go to his “workplace” and confront him

  • +1

CBA and banks that hold for 24hrs are the ones causing this whole scam scare. Buyers shouldn't be selling unless the money has come through and finalised but trusting people who can't be trusted is ruining it for everyone

  • Need to make sure it gets send to your app. and you see the notification from your bank account app…ON YOUR PHONE.

  • So have you received the funds yet? It’s been 2 business days.

  • I've been on both sides of similar situations haven't been scammed yet, but partially by luck.

I bought a bike, seller said come back when the funds clear. Collected bike after the weekend.

Sold a car, part cash, part payID. They had driven from the country so I accepted the risk. From memory I took a photo of the licence. All good.

Sounds like this case was a scam and should be reported as fraud.

    • Cars are also less likely to be targeted for this kind of thing - higher value so more likely for police to actually get involved, and much more difficult to sell (mostly have to be parted out)

  • +1

This is why I only accept payment by Western Union.

    • What services are you providing….🤔

      • Are you asking Zeggie 'Bigalow' ?

  • +3

I once sold a 3.5k lens. Buyer showed up wanting payid as he could not withdraw cash over the daily limit. I reluctantly accepted as I watched him paid through the app until finished. 2 days later the money still not arrived. I panicked. Third day, the money showed up.
I hope in your case, that’s all there is. Sometimes large amount got held longer.

    • +21

I don't recall your forum post about this event. You know the rules when you signed up to ozbargain. Please follow them in future.

      • -1

What are you on about? What rules did I not follow?

        • +5

Unwritten rule of posting entitled rants about self inflicted injustices.

With or without the /s tag

        • +10

@itstuan your sarcasm detector is malfunctioning, maybe change the batteries or something?

  • Maybe he took it home to test to see if it works and then pay you. It obviously didn't - that's why he didn't pay you and cancelled the transfer. (:

In future, cash only… except for amounts you can afford to lose (that is, big return for the risk). I once did a PayID in advance of collection. It was only $25 to secure an excellent secondhand lot of Lego.

  • +1

    Cash on pickup
    Cash on pickup
    Cash on pickup

    • +1

Instructions unclear - got paid cheque after pickup.

    • Could be fake notes.

      • +1

Highly unlikely but at least the police will be more inclined to investigate.
