Still failed to understand the premium of all Philips Hue products…

Agreed - the markup on something as simple as these motion sensors is entirely unjustified. I assume their business model relies on ecosystem lock-in

Most people who have worked on home automation for a number of years would generally say that Philips Hue products not only have better and significantly more hues (pun intended), they last longer, and work the easiest with less maintenance.

Worst thing about home automation is when it doesn't work, press a button and the light doesn't turn on, some automation hasn't triggered, or a light isn't triggering by a sensor. Often happening at the worst possible time. I've only been on the automation bus for 9 months now and can already say that the Hue products haven't required any maintenance whereas my garage door, air conditioners, solar, and others have had issues from time to time.

Yep, I can attest to this. I have tried many brands, none work as seamlessly as Philips Hue.

Have been running what people considered to be cheap, low end Bunning's Grid products (and with other Tuya products) for 2 years. Everything works perfectly all the time as well and never have got a single automation failed. Time automation, motion sensors, temperature / humidity sensors, door open / close sensors, remote control etc.. I've tried all in my home.

Best thing is if anything fails (which has not happened), return to Bunnings and get a new one.

        • Unless it's changed Grid devices use Wi-Fi instead of ZigBee. It always depends on the specific use case, but generally ZigBee is better as your device count grows.

      • Agree 100% with the caveat that older Hue devices, specially these motion sensors and the dimmer switches/remotes can have issues on larger non-Hue Zigbe networks.
They are definitely the most reliable and last the longest etc, but I'm at the point now where I've over 100 devices in my mesh, the above Hue devices will drop out and need manual re-pairing (or allowing the bridge to forever be open, which is bad security practice).
Currently in the process of planning to move my Hue sensors, remotes and lights back to the Hue bridge and leaving the other (mostly ZigBee 3 only devices) on their separate network.

Agree, tried Aqara for my home automation (through Hubitat), unfortunately, my experience is not as good; the device keeps disconnecting… plus it require a special battery too; while this Hue one accepts standard 2 x AAA battery

I'm happy to pay higher for a better quality product, rather than keep going back to maintenance/support it.

        My 2 cents

  • Those looking for a Zigbee based motion sensor, I can recommend Aqara P1 Motion sensor. It’s on par with the Hue motion sensor and is cheaper.

Will it work through hue app or home assistant only?

      • It will work within the Aqara ecosystem or through Home Assistant.

  • Got one when they first came out. Have tried to use it for various situations, but has never functioned properly. Originally placed it in the hallway to turn on a lamp at night and depending on the time at different light levels. The lights would randomly come on land off even out of the times set. Have tried some other functions, but now don’t use it.

    • Can I try yours 😉 ?
