Was looking for a scale and found this deal, seems like a decent scale. Probably not as good as the expensive Acaia Lunar. Scales can be had for as low as 10$ from eBay, this seems a cheap knock off copy of lunar.

I had this but ended up returning it. Was pretty flakey about auto-starting. Ended up just getting a small scale sans timer. The reality for me is the dual-boiler has the timer on it so it was kind of redundant. But if I didn't have a timer on the machine itself I'd have probably persevered.

    • Mine is slayer modded so I really don't look at the timer anymore just the ratio. It could be good for my drip coffee setup, reviews seemed decent. Let's see

      • How do you find the slayer mod? Worth it?

        • It's reversible, you can try it.

For me, my shots were all splashy when I first got the BDB. It took me some time to learn how to use 58mm filter size. Shots were fairly decent after I spent some time. Added accessories like WDT, Normcore tamper and puck screen.

If you ask me what's the advantage? Flow control, you can slow the shot down if you think it's come too fast. My shots now run for 65 seconds and longer because I slow them down for medium roasted beans.

I think it's worth a try. Not absolutely necessary if you strictly follow the puck prep.

Down side is, you can't descale your machine with this mod. It would break your machine. Mine got broken and then I had to reset the fault by disconnecting some sensors lol 😂 it was like reviving the machine. So don't do the descale with slayer mod. Hopefully you live in a area where water isn't hard and you use the water filters.

Worth it if you're a nerd and want more control. Not worth it if you can't be bothered.

          • @sqheaven: Pretty convincing, I'll give it a shot this weekend - I've had to rebuild a bunch of this stuff already, so shouldn't be too difficult!

            • @zebathin: After the mod, there's a learning curve. You'll need to put marks on the flow control valve. Start and stop. If you pass the stop sign, it engages the hot water tap. Which would stop the shot immediately.

Prepare to learn the slayer shots, there's going to be a mess at first and then you'd start to love it ♥️

  • How do these compare to a well regarded and reasonably priced Timemore black mirror scale?

      This is less dystopian

I've got one from aliexpress. It worked for a while but now just continuously tares which is not great for a scale…

The design is okay-ish. The buttons are touch sensitive, but press on the scale when you touch them, so the values wobble about before stabilising. There is a delay in the "tare" process to compensate, so it does work but just feels janky. As a plus, the whole top surface is one piece, so should be resistant to spills.

In summary, while it looks the part and worked okay (until mine stopped) it's definitely not pleasing to use.

    • Thanks for this info. Had been looking at picking this one up and you saved me.
