Fantastic headphones. My go to reference cans in the studio.

    • any idea how it compares to the hd 650s?

      • +2

The HD 600 are closer to neutral whilst the HD 650 have slightly better bass and less treble

        • +3

What Zonfierre said. I prefer the 600. The 650 feel muffled and unbalanced in comparison.

    • -1

      You should be using monitors.

      • Preferably with a sound-treated room, too. Otherwise headphones might be fine.

      • What makes you think I don't? Any half-decent audio engineer uses both.

  • Is there anywhere I can try and listen to this? I have always been interested in buying it, but I'm not sure how it differs compared to the SONY WH1000XM.

    • They're not really designed for the same use cases. If you're just listening to music/watching videos and happy with your WH1000XM then stick with those

    • +3

Addicted to Audio would be the place to go if you're near one

    • +4

In terms of sound quality, they will utterly crap all over closed, noise cancelling, Bluetooth headphones.

Buuut… they are open backed, huge and wired. They are about as close as to you can get to an opposite use case. You are not going to use these on the bus/train, or in fact anywhere outside the house.

    • +1

Depending on where you are located, but it is possible that minidisc.com.au (located in Chatswood, Sydney) might have a set. However as a commented noted below, you current headphones are noise cancelling wireless, whereas these are open backed and wired. They are chalk and cheese compared to each other.

Lastly, (happy to be corrected here) but I believe that these require a DAC/Amp which will set you back some additional $ and also potentially impact your portability.

      • And even without benefiting from an amp, open backed headphones like this really aren't something you'd want to take on public transport etc anyway.

    • +2

If you like closed back headphone, then you will be silly to pass this Focal Elegia deal: https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/collections/sale/products/foc…

  • how are these to someone that doesn't particularly handle background noise well?

don't have the quietest of places and am in the market for some new headphones. cheers

    • +4

Avoid them, you will hear a lot of noise leaking in (and out)

  • Is there any reason to get these over the hd6xx when they're <$300? Some reviews suggest the 6xx sound marginally (subjectively) better

    • +4

It is hard to < $300 because Drop charges GST now. I think shipping costs more too. also the low AUD.

      • Last I checked it was around $375 AUD (around $240 USD with postage and GST) delivered for the 6XX. Still wondering whether to get these or the 6XX. I'd be using them for electronic music, so I leaning more towards the 6XX based on other comments I've read. Especially if they have slightly better bass and less treble.

        • +1

Waiting on some to be delivered from drop, hopefully any day now. It's more like $355 with the US$10 sign up discount.

Shame the dollar not great, people were getting these cheaper a year or two ago.

    • Copypasta from my above comment: The HD 600 are closer to neutral whilst the HD 650 (6XX) have slightly better bass and less treble.

      Not better/worse, but preference.

    • No reason to get these over the 6xx. Easily worth the extra $20 imo (~$350 from drop).

the hurr durr six hungeos by ol mate senny

    • +4

I bet you like scarlet fire

  • People say the 650s are more comfortable too.

    • +1

      They're the same

    • +1

Same headband design, same earpads. Why would the 650s feel any different?

  • +1

This is an amazing price. Considering that it's $495 at Amazon AU. Can't beat this price.

  • Do these necessarily need an amplifier on say an iPhone, PS5 controller etc?

    • +1

I've used mine with a little handheld device (m8 tracker) and it was okay without an amp. I imagine iPhone would also, but can't speak for a controller.

  • +1

Checked their ebay store and managed to snag the last pair of 560s (which I have been holding out on a deal on forever) - code brought it down to $253. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Buy the Focal Clear for $799 and skip to the endgame (outside of going for the $3500 Utopia) imo, but people have their price points ofc

    • Or the Ananda Nano, or the Nan-7, or the 6XX, or the HD800S, or the Arya Stealth, or the RAAL CA-1A, etc

This is good mid-fi, and can readily be paired with a warm source to deliver a great outcome. Fantastic for the price if you can control the upper mids and presence boost with your setup.

      • Hifiman sets are so sharp and lack dynamics. I don't like them.

Nan6 on the other hand was amazing for the price. Had the pleasure to try it during my time in china. Sure it would be similar for the next iteration.

Most would like sennheiser sets more than the hifiman I'd argue.

        • Nan-7 is extremely dynamic, yes. Ananda Nano and Arya Stealth are a lot more dynamic than their predecessors.

          • @jasswolf: Tried organic at canjam chicago. Like the bass shelf a lot and it balances out the tonality a lot. Not so sure about nano since I haven't heard it.

With stealth still think the treble issue remains. Quite harsh mids and treble.

            • @zjz93: Oh look Arya is not my scene, but if you're going to get something that's more focused in that part of the HIFIMAN stack and you want a wide sound, it's the Arya Stealth until they start nailing the tonal balance with the Ananda Nano's follow up.

I'm more putting it up there as an alternative to the HD 800S.

    • I've been thinking about it, but just heard too many negatives about it, so it kind of scared me away.

      • +3

Negatives to the HD600? This has got to be one of the most conservatively 'safe' good headphone purchases around.

Great sound quality, great build quality, good product support if you ever need spare parts. There are no widespread reports of units falling apart or failing, of models being superseded at whim, no weird gotchas with sound.

Not what credible negatives there would be to the HD6x0 options.

        • +1

I was referring to the Focal Clear, this was a reply to @harcle.

          • @dottjt: Ah, thanks for the clarification. In which case I totally agree with you.

  • I got the 6XX from the previous deal on here, but what an amazing price.

  • +1

Mate, it's the Huh Duh Six Hungeos by old mate Senny

  • Comes up as $410 now

  • How are the HD599?

  • Back in stock now, just ordered a pair for those who missed out on the first batch.

    Update: One left.

    • Another 20 units back in stock around 12:30pm today, 19 left after I grabbed one ^_^

      • Managed to pick one up around 30 minutes ago, so still available.

  • They must have since jacked up the price. Because the AUGG15 coupon now brings it to $420.75 delivered which is way more. I guess they saw a huge influx of new orders and thought to cash in with a price jack. As dodgy as.

    • f that then, the customer will decide what is good price and what is too much!
have to jump on these things as soon as you see it!
