Focal Radiance Closed-Back Circumaural (Over Ear) Headphones $699 Delivered @ Addicted to Audio

280

A few other Focal headphones and speakers have been posted, but thought I'd post what I think is the best of the lot. "Highest" tier closed back headphones still in stock from the current sale with the Stellias now out of stock.

Addicted to Audio (BusiSoft AV) have been dropped as the Australia/New Zealand distributor for all Focal/Naim products, so assuming they're trying to get rid of them quickly. MSRP probably isn't 100% accurate (not sold anywhere else in Australia from licenced stores as far as I know), but overseas they retail for between maybe $1,400 to $2,000 AUD, so a big bargain to be had here.

Technical Specs:

Type Circum-aural closed-back headphones
Impedance 35 Ohms
Sensitivity 101dB SPL / 1mW @ 1 kHz
THD 0,1% @ 1kHz / 100dB SPL
Frequency response 5Hz – 23kHz
Speaker driver 15/8" Aluminium/Magnesium "M" shape dome
Weight 0.95lbs (435g)
Cables supplied 1x 4ft. (1.2m) OFC 24 AWG cable with 1/8" (3.5mm) unbalanced TRS jack connector, 1x jack adapter, 1/8" (3.5mm) point socket – 1/4" (6.35mm) point plug
Hard-shell carry case provided 97/8x91/2x43/4" (250x240x120mm)

Easy to drive (no DAC/amp required) so you can use with your phone/PC. Has quite high passive sound dampening compared to other ones I've used in the past. Clamps pretty hard on my head so may take some getting used to. Carry case is quite nice and sturdy, though it absolutely looks like you've got a woman's handbag or makeup bag.

Purchased this recently and actually like it more than my OG clear. Great aesthetics and premium top-grain leather. Highly recommend it.

I bought one too but don't like mine as much as my OG Clear. Treble is hotter and bit more metallic/harsh than the Clear.

Could be my ears, could be unit variation. They take eq well though. I'm experimenting with some damping inside the cups.

      • I should add I am still pretty happy with it for the price though. Really nice bass and resolution, pretty equla to the Clear in that respect. I suspect I'm more sensitive to treble than most. They take eq well though. I'm experimenting with some damping inside the cups with good effect so far.

        • hah, guess we all do have different tastes and ears. My only real preference for the radiances is that the upper treble was a bit stronger! I find some snare drums and cymbals are missing the shine on them

      • I visited A2A last Sat to demo both the Clear OG and Radiance in addition to some other headphones. Maybe it was all the rave reviews I read/watched, but I was slightly underwhelmed by the Clear. However, I was thoroughly impressed with the Radiance which had a brightness that really suited my taste. My main concern with them is potential heat buildup in summer months thanks to the leather earpads.

I demoed these last weekend, ended up buying a Bathys. I already own a pair of OG Clears (which I carried with me for comparison), and the Radiance was similar (spent about 2 hours listening to various songs), except its worse by a little bit in everything compared to the Clears. You are spot on about the treble its just very weird and metallic almost artificial. In the looks department, these look amazing and wipe the floor with the others. I just didn't love the sound the treble was too funky (as much as I wanted to because these are half off with the current discount).

I'd strongly recommend you go in person and listen to these before plonking $700 down. If you don't own a pair of Clears and you can push your budget by another $100, the Clears are much better overall.

Got these recently too, they don’t run well off a phone (ie iPhone and apple dongle). Sounds amazing through m2 Mac though.

  • So who represents focal in Australia after addicted is out of the picture? For warranty claims êtc?

    • +3

A2A says they still provide 1 year warranty on the products. Our consumer guarantees require them to fulfil it, potentially more than 1 year for some products.

  • A pair of these or the Clear for EDM and hip hop?

  • +2

I have the Clears and they are great at edm. It's your taste though. Possibly sample them

  • For someone who currently owns a pair of Sennheiser 599s and wants to upgrade, should I be looking at the Radiance or Clear? Only listen at home so open-back isn't an issue, is the sound stage on the Clears really worth the extra $100? In it more for a fun listening experience too, more focus on that than on accuracy if I'm honest. Sadly can't drop into a store to demo as I'm Brisbane based :/

Lost bass and noise to people next to you aside, I have no idea why anybody would pick closed headphones over opens.

(that doesn't mean there isn't a reason, I'm just saying, I don't get it if you're not catering to the aforementioned fortes of closed).

      • I do agree, open based are superior, and I own the Focal Clears, and when I heard then I thought "…end game". These are brilliant.

But now I see these and I am just wondering, how do they sound.. The Clears were just so damn good, how does a Focal closed headphone sound.. but now I am honestly just being greedy really. But I am ever so curious as to how the Radiance sounds.

  • I want these….I don't need them, hell not even sure I'd use them but I want them!

I have both the Clear OG and Radiance, using them with an Arche and they're both great. If I could have only one it'd be the Radiance. I like the sound more. The bass is amazing, better than my LCD3

  • This or Bathys? I know they are different as one is wired and the other wireless but the Bathys has an USB Dac integrated and in this mode it sounds apparently close to Radiance. Bathys can also be used outside as it's more compact. Have anyone compared both?

    • +1

I listened to both and the Bathys sounded better to me (I ended up ordering the Bathys), the treble of the Radiance sounded a bit unnatural. It could be unit variation though. Looking at everyone praising the Radiance so much, I'm almost tempted to go have a second listen. Bathys sounded fuller and the bass was deeper, and the wireless / dac mode is good to have based on your listening situation. I'd recommend going in and listening to both.

If Bluetooth or active noise cancellation are important to you then get Bathys. Note it’ll get outdated after few years when newer and faster version of bluetooth or ANC processing come around.

If spending $$$ on headphones and lasting a lifetime is important to you, then get cable headphone. They all have different sound profile. The one that sound nice to you is the best for you.

Shame I was going to bite on this today but seems to be $799 now

    • Mine's coming tomorrow they shipped express even though I didn't pay for it which is nice of them

At $699 the Bathys at $649 wasn't worth a consideration

With the Radiance at $799 though it may make more sense for a mid-range option

I was thinking of Brodening a couple of Radiance since the overseas price is way more than this, but with the race to the bottom for tech gear I'm not so confident

      • I reckon good chance you'll be able to resale for more, but it's not a sure thing.

      • I've just received mine and the box has a dent right in the middle. I wonder if this was part of a lot with carton damage. How was yours?

        • +1

          No dents on my unit.

    • They're still at a good price compared to real MSRP, but yeah extra $100 now. I think it makes some of the other headphone options more appealing with a larger price range difference

Got mine 2 days ago, super impressed by it's SQ, A/Bed with Elegia which I got a few years ago but barely used, this thing is miles away. Agree the treble is a bit weird and sounds somewhat metallic, which actually suits my taste and it can easily be fixed by EQ if you don't like that part. Overally this is an amazing closed back headphone which even at $799 is hard to beat.
