Breville The Dynamic Duo Coffee Machine - $1444.15 + Delivery (Bonus $100 StoreCash Credit + Gift Pack) @ The Good Guys

270
AUG15

The price of the Breville Dual Boiler has rocketed, and it seems like it's only locally available as part of the Dynamic Duo package with the Smart Grinder Pro.
Needed to replace our ~10 year old BDB and this was a great opportunity

The AUG15 code has been previously posted Original Coupon Deal but I wanted to highlight this item in particular. The code brings the price down from $1699 to $1444.15. Delivery was $26 to metro Melbourne which I could stomach

This stacks with either the ShopBack or Cashrewards 4% cashback offer (Update: just got confirmation on $61.78 cashback from SB).

If you sign up for Good Guys StoreCash program BEFORE purchasing, you should also get $100 store credit added to your account for a future purchase (valid for 90 days)

All in all, I think it's a great deal given the BDD until recently was ~$1k but is now only found for >$1.7k. I think I'll sell the grinder and put the money towards a better one.

EDIT: forgot to add that Breville is also running a father's day promo. A purchase of the Dynamic Duo during the promo period qualifies you for redemption of a gift pack that includes:
1 Breville Knock Box Mini
• 1 Breville Dual Wall Latte Duo (200ml)
• Live Roaster Online Demonstration
• BEANZ Member Discount – 4 months @ 50% off (limit of 16 x 250g bags; selected roasters)

Redeem by 24th September, 2023 (see Breville T&Cs for more info)

Insane price hikes on this combo… I recall seeing it for as low as around ~$900 on OzB a few years back, if memory serves. Shame I didn't bite the bullet back then as was hoping it would go down further to circa $750 mark.

If you're happy with a second hand unit or refurb you can find them on FB marketplace etc. for less than that

If you're not wanting to do any repairs yourself though it can be pricey if it has any issues. There was an issue I couldn't fix with our old BDB so took it in to a local shop and was quoted $400 to fix it. Not sure how long it'd last after that (and it was about 2 generations old already) so we decided to buy a new one.

      • +1

I've got a guy in Brisbane that repairs BDBs and sells them for 350-500ish depending on which model they are. I've been back to him a few times for different repairs and highly recommend him.

      • They have issues that more expensive machines don't have - such as galvanic corrosion. They really aren't engineered to last a lifetime.

As a former owner, buying a BES900/920 would be like buying a car with 150k on the clock.

However, I don't regret buying one new for a moment.

I'm surprised to see how much cheaper this machine is in Australia compared to other places in the World. I've been to Canada recently and could see the machine sold for $2.4K CAD + tax which would be over $3.1K AUD! Bought a refurbished dual boiler from this shop in Australia https://www.ebay.com.au/str/bravocoffeeexperts back in May this year. Cost was $500 delivered, looked new when I got it.

Still at $1.4K with the grinder it's a good deal and less than half the price compared to Canada or USA

    • +2

That's a first. usually it's the other way around, for example cars.

    • -2

Breville is manufactured here. So we get it cheaper I guess

      • Just looked at the bottom of my BES860 & it says Made in China.

        • Most thing these days are 😁

          Google says

Breville's manufacturing process is based in Australia. The company has factories in Melbourne and Sydney, where most of its products are made. Breville also has offices in the United States, Canada, China, and the United Kingdom

          • @electroz: I wouldn't believe the this when looking at the price tag… for something actually manufactured here in Australia won't normally be affordable to an average Oz…

    • +1

Breville is an Aussie company (though they manufacture in Asia). It's listed on the ASX. It also happens to have a shred of decency so it's one of the very rare examples of products that are cheaper here. BDB is $1500ish USD and 1100ish GBP in their respective countries. 100% The BDB is made in China.

  • Anyone with the grinder who can share your thoughts? My understanding is that the grinder is a bit average so it might worthwhile if you have a bit of extra $$$ as a new user to flip the grinder and spend a bit extra on a DF64/Eureka Mignon.

    • +6

Breville Smart Grinder is a bare minimum for expresso. It works. But it is noisy, slow and produces a lot of clamps. For some people it last years, for some people it loses the ability to grind for expresso later.

Any Eureka will be a step up in a grind quality, speed and (especially) the noise. :)

      • +2

Agreed, if you're not in a rush I'd wait for a Dual Boiler sale and then buy the Eureka. Will be about the same price.

        • -3

Not sure what you mean, this IS the sale haha (It seems these days, this is the best price you're gonna get on a BDB)
Not to mention that it seems like they are only being sold in the dynamic duo package as well, and not standalone.

My approach is buy the package, sell the grinder and upgrade.

          • +3

@FreeAsABird: This unit still comes down to the $850 - $950 on its own (multiple times this year). I believe Jacko is suggesting waiting for that and spending the extra few hundred on a quality grinder.

            • @Jebus: Last time was in June, (deal ended about a week before I decided I was going to grab one to replace my EM7000 rather than trying to fix it) and even stock of non-discounted stand alone Dual Boilers seems to have dried up. Question is if this is a change in strategy for Breville, or just a temporary thing.

              • @Melthar: @Jebus I did indeed mean this. This happens with the Dual Boilers where they'll reduce supply of the standalone units and only sell the combo. I h expect that a BDB will go on sale. The deal isn't a bad price but if you're happy to wait better may be on the horizon.

      • SG Pro + BDB = coffee happiness for me. My BDB is showing 3,700 shots, probably about 1/2 those are actuals. (The rest are purging shower etc)

Breville Smart Grinder is a bare minimum for expresso

It's pretty good for espresso too :)

    • My only experience is with an older version of the smart grinder. Yes it's noisy, but manageable. I also was not using any tools to make the coffee better (e.g. WDT tool and distributor) before tamping.

I just happen to have a bit more cash and happy to level up - by no means do I feel that it's necessary though. I could equally just use the SGP… but why else do I work if not to buy shiny things?

    • +1

Can't agree more. I had a Breville smart grinder, I've used it for years. I didn't taste the sweetness of the beans until I upgraded to a Mignon SD, which made me realise how bad my previous grinder was.

    • -1

The Mignon is soooo ugly though!

    • +1

I have a BSG and it's dying a slow, painful death and I've shifted it to work. I've already had to replace a part with a 3D printed one, since it's obsolete. The problem is it's slow, noisy and there is retention of grounds, so you get stale coffee leftovers mixed with the fresh. A new one is around $300. You might sell it for $250.

I just bought a DF64 for under $600 (imported), and compared to the BSG, they are light years apart. It's fast powerful and almost zero retention from its flat burrs. A very noticeable difference and better coffee.

Honestly, I buy the DF64 or Eureka and then use the leftovers (or more) to buy a longer-lasting machine.

We have had the dual boiler combo for 13 years, made 3-5 coffees a day (more with visitors) and the coffee machine only just died 3 or so months ago. We replaced it with the same model again, the grinder is bullet proof. Never had an issue with it. I have had modify its settings for the first time recently so perhaps its finally started to wear. Honestly cant give enough credit for these devices. The only thing I would say is the new coffee machine we got was the black model, do not get it as its already wearing after only a few months, stick with this colour as our original unit has not faded at all. Currently having a coffee out of this combo as a type ☕️

    • I have had modify its settings for the first time recently

Do you have to dial in the grinder every time you get fresh beans?

      • from my limited knowledge as the beans age you have to grind more finer, so yes, each bag you would have to adjust

        • Definitely agree here, and I've got a Niche Zero. Beans from Five Senses usually start around a 30 and come down to ~25 in the week or two it takes me to get through a 250g bag. Its even more noticeable with a 1kg bag.

        • -1

          Yep, exactly.
          My point here… ;)
and I really don't want to offend anyone…

But almost every time I hear "it works fine for 10 years" or "it works great - I've never had to touch settings"…
Most of the time it comes from people who have no idea what they are doing and how their espresso machine supposed to work. :|

I have never seen a BDB working PROPERLY for 10+ years. :)
Yes, it might make some noise and spit out some hot water… But I saw an example where the pump has failed yeas ago and was pumping 4 bars max. But the owner was sure there is nothing wrong with the machine.

          • -1

@SickDmith: So how do you tell if the pump pressure has dropped.

            • @WatchNerd: BDB got pressure gauge. When you do backflush the gauge should reach 9 bar.

    • Hi there, I have had the black model since the start of the year and mine is flawless still, can you let me know where the wearing is starting on yours please? I've wiped down the outer shell a couple of times when dust has built up, and I rinse/clean the tray, but now you have me concerned.

I had a silver Breville, for a very long time, and eventually the tray started some mild corrosion, but that was about it I think.

      • +1

I have the black model of this machine but haven't had any issues with markings or fade or anything of that nature, with two exceptions :

        1) I have a scratch on the side from when I moved house and wasn't careful
        2) the top lip of the drip tray has same paint missing where the metal tray has been taken on and off over the years. Now that I look at it, this seems inevitable unless you were to put something over the edge like some black electrical tape or something.

Neither of these things are noticeable until you look very closely.

        • Thanks!

  • Been eyeing this off do i jump on it 🤔

    • +2

If it helps you, I had a second hand BDB that was 10 years old before it died (I had it for 6). I got ever dollar of value and more out of that machine.
I was looking at prosumer machines to replace it (Rancillio, ECM, Quick Mill, La pavoni) but they did not have the strong list of features the BDB has, despite being 2-3x the price…. FFS some of these $4K machines didn't even have shot timers or a brew pressure gauge!!

In the end I decided to get another BDB, they're way ahead of any other unit on the market in terms of value for money IMO (and the opinion of many online reviewers)

      • +1

In the end I decided to get another BDB

My train of thoughts every time BDB dies - impossible to beat the value even if it fails every 3-4 years.

      • +1

        Seconded.
My BES900 from 2012 is still going strong - have only replaced pump after ~4 years $30 ebay item or something. They're absolute units.

      • going to pull the trigger on it(the extra shopback pushed me over) if i was to sell the grinder whats a reasonable upgrade to swap it out for?

    • i recon i bought myn in 2015 for the same price, hasnt skipped a beat, easy to maintain

  • +2

get a better grinder and you have a wining package.

  • Wasn't the dual boiler by itself sub <$900 recently?

The price fluctuates a lot, for those who are happy to wait

    • I was looking at past deals and some forum posts say there's no more deals or discontinued while others say theres deals towards end of the year?

      • Who knows for sure…

        $880 in June this year,
And 900-1000 every month before that

  • +1

thanks for your post, just purchased with cashrewards 61.77 and possible storecash rewards. Our old breville barista pro recently filled water in the grinder by my 3 years old boy, and it's broken.. now it's the time to upgrade!!

  • HN (yes I know) have it as a standalone item for $1,399. Not sure if that means it will be coming back into stock in other stores standalone. I got it for $899 in June.

    • Every time someone posts that it's no longer stocked or discontinued I point out that it's purposefully not supplied to some retailers

The fact that it is stocked means that some retailers just don't stock it individually until Breville release stock, something dodgy going on with their pricing and release of this model. Probably to create artificial demand

    • talked with harveys, no actual stock. might see it around November.

I bought the black combo set for a bit more at the start of year.

BSG, this I've been extremely impressed with, sure it's the only stand alone grinder I've ever owned, previous ones were in the machine, but I took it out of the box, turned it on, put beans in it and have left it on default settings, I run darker roast beans so maybe I got lucky. I really like the magnetic tray below group that catches stray grinds, pops out, rinse it, pops in, fantastic.

The machine itself, excellent, it wakes up just before I do, again mostly default settings, 93c, I set the extraction time to 22s down from 30s iirc, and being a dual boiler the steam is available immediately.
Also Q.O.L. bits, filling water from the front, and being able to see the fill gauge at the front is great too. Pressure gauge very helpful. To move the machine around, when you take the tray out there's a dial that you twist 180 degree and a wheel drops down so you can roll it and re-position it, excellent. Like I said it wakes up before I do, it has a clock and alarm to pre-heat itself, it only takes a couple of minutes (maybe 3) but nice to have it do that before you get there so it's ready straight away.

Using Melbourne tap water the filter is still working fine but I have a backup for when it needs replacing eventually. I have descalled it a couple of times when it has told me.

Accessories not included, the rubber descaling tray for the group, I also replaced the milk jug with one with a temperature gauge. Yep, the BSG if you're after more even extraction and less clumping, various things to even grind distribution. Otherwise yeah, good package, good price imo.

  • My NS Oscar has poured it's last shot I think. I pulled it apart tonight and don't think it's redeemable so I'm now looking for a replacement. From what I'm reading this BDB seems to be a good choice. Shame it's so bloody expensive these days compared to the days of old. I'll have to keep an eye out for another sale.

    • I've been looking just about everywhere for the BES920, it's just not around. The ones you do see are BEP920, paired with the SGP
