How can this one $2,000 and 23 sold 🙄

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/385692787641?epid=225110430&hash…

    • Because it's a much, much better, open back headphone, with a unique presentation of soundstage and imaging that is more reminiscent of surround speakers, while also being genuinely high resolution.

The HD400S is comparatively slapped together with glue. Definitely demo the 800S before buying (which people were doing for $1470 on sale), but it's an exceptional headphone.

Costs don't increase linearly when R&D and manufacturing/testing effort substantially increase.

If you want better value for money, there's lots of great closed and open backs in the $100-$550 range.

For those getting lured in by brand reputation: not remotely in the same band of quality as Sennheiser's open back headphones. There are $100 Bluetooth headphones that sound better right now, new Bluetooth tech finally on the way, and sales for good wired closed backs will roll around again.

Good options for the brand would be the HD280 Pro or the HD25 Light v2 at $120 or less each, but both lack detail compared to modern options.

    Good options elsewhere include the AKG K361 ($100-$120 ideal price) & K371 ($150-$170), the Audeze Maxwell ($400-$450), the Shure SRH840a ($150-$180), Beyer DT770 ($100-$120).

      Or the 560s for $143…
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/796855

That's gotta be bang for buck right there. Not available for everyone of course…

      • Yes, but it's also an open back headphone, which is a very different use case.

I'll take that as my fail for the day 😔

I did want a closed back, but ended up buying the hd 600 (which I don't regret) and is arriving today.

Do you think the truthear shio is both a good match and needed for the 600?

Love your contribution to the site btw 👍

@nismo: 100% think that's a great starting combo, and you'll get a wider soundstage with sharper imaging as you figure out your move to a decent destkop amp and (separate) DAC.

If your alternative is on-board sound, the 600 will sound lifeless and muddy.

            • @jasswolf: A slight step up from on-board perhaps, I have a few usb dongles;

              CharmTek (tpr22 pro)
              Xduoo link
              Apple

Will try wait for the truthear to drop back down on amzn, have the home HiFi amp if I get desperate 😁

              Thank you!

Edit, plus a FiiO M5 DAP and an EarStudio es100 to play around with

@nismo: I know the xDuoo Link 2 BAL are well regarded, while the SE version and the original v1 don't have enough power to drive it more fully. So yeah you've got a lot of dongles and DAPs that only really deal with low impedance and high sensitivity gear.

@jasswolf: 👍 Yeah, getting a bit more oomph from them, but it's not enough. Let's see how patient I am, that damn next day shipping is tempting me ha ha
