This new machine from Sunbeam looks to be an upgrade of Sunbeam's Cafe Series Duo Espresso Machine EMM7200 with an integrated grinder. Pretty good pricing considering the Cafe Series Duo is usually $700+

Compared to the Ozbargain favourite Breville Barista Express BES870, this machine has 2 notable differences:

  • 58mm group head
  • Dual thermoblock

Given that it is a new machine, I have yet to come across an in-depth review of it. That said, early reviews seem to be good but take it with a grain of salt as it's from Sunbeam's website.

I could be wrong here but looks like you can get 22% cashback on click & collect via Shopback which will bring it down to $596.

Looks good. I know everyone's favourite is Breville, but Sunbeam makes decent & affordable coffee machines.

  • +1

I've been entertaining the thought of this machine, and would be keen to get other's opinions. Would you buy the Breville Barista Pro or the Sunbeam Origin? I know the Sunbeam has a dual boiler which is great for efficiency, but I wonder if the Barista Pro has more options for a budding home barista.

    • +1

FYI dual thermoblock, not dual boiler.

    • Of what I've played around with my dad's EM6910, they're all 15 bar pressure instead of lower like the Breville ones usually are

      • What's the advantage of higher pressure?

Breville "limits" the 15-bar pumps in their products to use 9 bars as it's the typical force you want to apply to your coffee to make espresso.

So I'm not sure if it's good or bad if a machine applies more pressure than the standard 9 bars.

Edit: it probably doesn't use 15 bar and it's just marketing to mention it in specs.

        • I dont see any regulator inside the Barista Express.

This suggests its straight from the pump (basically all home machines use the same ULKA Pump).

          https://espressoaf.com/manufacturers/breville/preinfusion.ht…

The only way I can get a decent length extraction is to hold the shot button in and run it in pre infusion mode.

Grinder burr set at 1, side setting at 2.

Using the Downtown beans from here.

No channeling visible in puck. Just full pressure blasts it out way too fast. Top of the pressure gauge.

          • @tunzafun001:

The only way I can get a decent length extraction is to hold the shot button in and run it in pre infusion mode.

Same with my Barista Express, I switched to brewing using the pre-infusion and I get much better results. But either way I get channeling - more when it goes full-pressure.

So then, if there's no regulator (since you don't see it) how can Barista Express serve two different pressures for infusion and extraction?

            • @pizzaguy: Would just undervolt the pump I'd imagine, but the BBE does have an OPV from the looks of it (mentions of modding it on reddit and coffee snobs)

              • @Paudius: Yep, voltage reduced.
But as you say there is an OPV mod guide.

Maybe I just missed it (I replaced the notorious cracked plastic elbow inside with a metal one).

Saw the guide on Reddit. Will check it out. Cheers

            • @pizzaguy: The pressure changes due to the difference in water flow between pre infusion and extraction.

          • @tunzafun001: When did you get your machine? The older ones (I used to have one) had spring which was set to too high pressure, I believe the newer model is set to 9bar. BTW, I shortened the spring of my machine and it got to ~9bar limit.
I believe the pre-infusion is like 3-4bar and to make the entire shot in this mode will not produce a good shot.

            • @huntabargain: Which spring?

My preinfusion mode is around 6 bar. So not really enough. Good, but some flavour profile missing.
But its better than the normal over extraction, which is around 12 bar.

I just grabbed a Sunbeam Barista Max (Hard Rubbish). Will just need an oring replaced. Be interesting to see how it compares.

              • @tunzafun001: Google on youtube for Barista OPV mod, you will find out how to do it.

                • @huntabargain: Just read it. All makes sense. Thanks for this.

Must get a fair bit of water in the tray though (which is already a lot). It loves to purge.

                  Thinking

                  1. Sort the spring (get it to 11 bar, 9 at the basket).

                  2. Rerout purge back to water tank (its by far the worst machine ive used already for purging).

                  3. Put the temp back to default.

    Competition is always good!

  • +2

    This looks interesting

  • +2

Much more modern design than the Breville…and the 58mm portafilter is appealing

    • +1

      My thoughts exactly.

I only wonder what the build quality is. In my mind Sunbeam usually hasn't felt as sturdy and quality as Breville products. Ie. Breville felt a bit more premium.

      Happy to be corrected here.

      • +1

I think the price difference between Sunbeam and equivalent Breville reflects that. However it doesn't necessarily mean the Sunbeam will break down before the Breville. I had the SB Barista Max for couple years without issues before upgrading to the Breville Barista Pro and it had steam problem within few months.
        Both are good machines IMO.

  • +3

15 bar pump doesn't necessarily mean 15 bar over pressure valve, OPV. Will be on the look out for a review to see what pressures are at the group head (hopefully 9-10bar), if the OPV can be adjusted, and if the shot dosing is volumetric or just time based. Looks good for a beginner all in one though if the grinder is even half ok. Would consider for my parents.
If the Breville barista Pro was 58mm head I probably would have gotten it instead of my dual boiler to be honest, drives me mad they screw around with 54mm.

  • Sunbeam always have decent competitive prices and they're design is pretty good.

However, I wouldn't purchase any Sunbeam products ever again. I purchased a kettle and a toaster a few years ago and both had produced sepate faults in just two weeks after purchase. The kettle had a piece of plastic come off inside and the toaster had heating issues. I googled about the model after and found similar issues with others. Got a refund from Myer straight away thankfully.

There's definitely a trade off with their low prices.

    Also, https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/sunbeam-1

    • I'd take the product review site with a grain of salt as people are more likely to leave bad reviews than good reviews.

Breville has similar negative reviews as Sunbeam

      • +1

People are likely to leave a bad review than good one. You can eat at a restaurant for years and not leaving any good review. One bad taste and here goes 1 star.

      • true though, but I just added that to my personal bad experience. :)

    • wow, it's entirely different product range here. Any brand can and will break down.

      • in the first two weeks? 2 different products?

        • Bad luck I guess. I've owned a few Sunbeam appliances and none of them broke down that quick. Neither did my SB coffee machine.

  • +1

the early reviews are so detailed and look extremely fake.

still, very tempted to get this to replace my barista pro that died.

  • Looks great. I've owned the previous EM6900, EM7000 and now the EM7200 and never had any issues with them. The first two I bought were second hand and were atleast 3/4 years when I bought them. Finally bit the bullet and got the EM7200 for Christmas last year and its a work horse.

    • +1

I have the EM7200 and it’s been fantastic for me. Never missed a beat. Quality feels great, other than the plastic handles, which is to be expected at this price range. If only they could write the manual correctly for the cleaning and descaling procedures.

      • Filtered water, and give it a flush out once a week and you're good to go for at least 5 years! I usually get mine serviced every 1.5 years.

        • The problem is that the button combinations to begin the descale cycle in the original instructions do not work. Sunbeam then updated the instructions online, but I still cannot start the descaling cycle. The group head cleaning cycle works fine.

      • +1

I think the manual is correct - what I found is you need to press the buttons quickly in sequence - under a second.

    • Got a free 6900 when our breville DB went in for service and it worked very well! Not quite on the same level but entirely reasonable so would think with this price gap the sunbeam is worth considering particularly if you're just going to use a built in grinder.

This would work with 22% cashback at myers?

    • +1

According to this comment, 18.4% cashback which will bring it down to $623.55

      • Correction - I've forgotten to factor out GST

My purchase tracked at $127.35, bringing down the price to $636.80 (effectively 16.67% off).

  • Is it time for an upgrade? Been running a Sunbeam Mini Barista since 2021 and it's been ol' reliable… would love to up my espresso game though!

  • Going off the video's on their site it appears as though the group handle is aluminium, can anyone confirm?

  • For those who does not have space to ramp the coffee every time I suggest to grab a Breville impress. The built-in tamp is great

  • $734 on Good Guys Commercial

    • So this deal is better considering CR 18% !

      • yeah definitely

  • Thanks OP!
