  • genuine quesiton. is there good mulch and bad mulch?

    • +19

There's not mulch in it to be honest.

      • +19

        Mulch of a mulchness then.

    • +2

If it's bagged by brunnings then it should be sufficiently safe/clean. Otherwise different types of wood mulch can produce different soil pH. From memory, I think pine can raise the pH.

      • The process the bark to get the right pH for potting mix. It can take months to process.

Some bark mulch is finer and breaks down faster than the chunkier stuff. And has more woody powder substance which is basically useless.

    • +1

Lowest tier of mulch will be very thinly cut stuff. If you spread that at an insufficient thickness, it can wick up moisture out of the soil and evaporate water faster than the bare soil. Also bad if you get mulch carrying diseases, weeds or insect pests.

Suitable for rental properties to fill holes in the yard left by the previous tenant.

      • Haha. Either took their plants, or digging for gold.

        • Most likely pets

    $170/m3 is pretty expensive tbh

Good for small garden bed though. The delivery charge by a supplier of bark will be around $70 anyway.

If you need a bit, check on fb marketplace and get it delivered in bulk

  • Can highly recommend cypress chips for mulch, only in bulk from a landscape place, about 90 per cube.

I think I paid $9.70 for 70 liters at Bunnings a couple of weeks ago. This would only be a good deal if you need a single bag.
Edit: $9.78 for 60L red chip. So about the same price per litre.

What brand? $9.70 for pine bark?

    • So you got some Brunnings from Bunnings?

    Termite food in a bag.

  • Check with your local council. Most have a designated location for their contractors to dump mulch and wood chips. BYO container and fill your boot.

    • or electricity network contractors trimming trees from powerlines

  • Anyone else always get gnats whenever they buy bagged potting mix? I reckon 2 of the last 3 bags I’ve bought have caused gnat infestations. Finally got rid of it, then boom, next bag 😩

    • +2

Absolutely - I also got a bunch in my last bag of orchid bark, but leaving them out in the sun for a day seems to finish them off and maybe even kill the eggs if it's a real scorcher of a day… Which is obviously impossible in winter.

      • +1

I found leaving some vinger and dishsoap in water captures the gnats.
Found it online one day and works well for me.

Unfortunately it doesn't stop their reproduce cycle, but it does reduce the amount of adults flying around

I got back from my local Woolies a few hours ago. The whole place stunk making it almost unbearable for the workers and customers. Woolies was pretty bad too.

    • +2

Thanks for warning us. Give us a heads-up next time you're going and I will be sure to stay away.

I purchased some bags with 10% woolies mobile discount. It's not too bad imho and the facts that it's stored in smaller bags, i can just keep the rest for future instead getting rid of the pile in the drive way. Pinegro is better quality tho, $11.70 at bunnings.
