    need Casio fx-8200AU haha

Yeah, undoubtedly, this pricedrop is because of the arrival of the Casio fx-8200AU

"While the much-loved fx-82AU PLUS II 2nd edition continues to be a staple of Australian mathematics technology, Casio has worked with Australian teachers to evolve and design a tool that better suits the needs of scientific calculator users in Australia."

If I were you, I'd pay the extra $25 and go for an 8200, but I guess if you need to add a few numbers with some trig and log functions, this is solid for $25.

Side note I remember a day when these kinda calculators were a bargain $8.90 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/231590)

      • Yes i remember that deal, bought 3 of them back then!

Yeah, undoubtedly, this pricedrop is because of the arrival of the Casio fx-8200AU

I doubt that. For the average student, the 82AU is complicated enough to use. The 8200AU has too steep a learning curve.
In my opinion, most school will continue using the 82AU.

        • Love my CFX-9850GB Plus

        • Well unless the prices fall it makes more sense to go fx-8200…

          fx-82AU PLUS II 2nd edition RRP = $ 44.95 (souce Casio)
          fx-8200AU RRP = $49.95 (souce Casio)

Where I work Year 7's are getting the fx-8200AU next year

      • but is the fx-8200 an approved calculator?

        • Its right on the website…

Casio’s most advanced scientific calculator approved by Australian Exam Authorities.

          and

Is the fx-8200 AU approved for use in New South Wales?
Yes! The fx-8200 AU is approved by NESA for use from 2023. View NESA’s approval list.

          • @ColdFusion: Yeah and students don't need to know how to simplify surds, express radian angles in terms of pie or use the change of base formula for logs anymore :/

            • @CVonC: Lol they were showing me the new functions the calculator could do and I literally showed them the change of the base log rule to show it doesn't save that much time.

    • +2

While the 8200 adds some good features, it is much slower to use and quite clucky. Some functions are 3+ levels deep in menus taking 8+ button presses while on the 82 they were simply two button presses. A step back as far as I'm concerned.

      • +1

        and quite clucky

        Lock up your other calculators.

      • +1

Also depends on the course. NSW Extension 1 students would go insane doing Combinatorics with this calculator, where in Advanced, the ability to simplify surds and evaluate logs of any base saves time.

      • Suggestions for Year 11 maths pls - lost calculator and need to buy a replacement now

      I remember when HP48's were $500+

      • +2

That's because it was basically a super computer in 1990.

      • Check out the HP50g, they've appreciated in recent times

      • +1

Lol I spent a further $100 and a lot of research etc doubling the RAM in my HP48G back in the mid 90s. I've still got it sitting on my desk.

        $2000

        • $2000?

Contemporaneously they cost well over $10,000 in a form useful for work. Everything needed an extra board.

From.whatvi remember these are perfectly valid for uni too

  • Does officeworks when you price beat charge for shipping?

  • Have the FX-1000AU here's hoping I don't have to use it again for UNI lol.

    • +1

You probably will, Scientific calculators only generally.

  • Wouldn't FX100 a better option? Since it is also approved (at least in NSW) but includes more functions.

Back in uni days most engineering students use HP, RPN was popular back then, but no longer a thing it seems.

    • RPN is still taught at my TAFE but admittedly it was my first time learning of its existence there

Thanks OP, bought two for my daughter's for when they are in year 11.

They're only 2 and 4 but 2035 will come fast enough.. I just hope they aren't teased when their classmates find out that their version doesn't connect directly to your brain or iPhone 27.

    • +1

I may buy one for mine as well. One of them has to use my old Casio FX100AU

    Can it run Doom?

  • Ahh I feel old remembering the good old engineering days.

  • I guess with mobile phones being banned in schools around Australia, kids will have to go back to the 20th century and do maths on calculators rather than using apps.

    • +18

The push to ban phones in schools primarily came from Big Calculator, and had nothing to with classroom disruption and cyber bullying.

      • +1

        Big Calculator, lol!

      • +3

        God damnit!

I just spat beer out all over my new keyboard.

    • I finished school in 1999 and mobile phones were banned back then too. It's not a new thing.

  • How do I get 80085 again?

  • I remember these being such a big requirement for school and then they were never used for much more than the basics. Much like textbooks at Uni.

  • It depends on which state you’re in but kids in year 11 and 12 would be equipped with CAS these days.

  • Jimmy-ah, congratulations, now you're a woman.

  • 5318008

    • 55318008 (you missed one letter)

      • I loved spelling the words but also the old school trick where you

        1) Type your phone number
        2) Type your age
        3) Type your year of birth
        4) Type the year that you turn that age
        5) End result = your original phone number :P

  • Does it run doom?

      • Oh dear. I should’ve read through all the comments

    • Maybe pimp quest.

  • don't they sell for 1/2 price every january?

    • +2

Yeah but if exams are in term 4, it's not worth failing to save$25

  • Microsoft Math app if not for the educational purpose.

  • +1

nope nope not good enough needs to be a graphics calculator so I can play tetris …. I mean "do" physic calculations and graphs. :D

  • Calculators are moslty for exams where a spreadsheet and phone app isn't allowed. I finished a masters degree in 2002 at UWS (Now WSU). Exams were open book. I used Excel for everything (always within the rules, never cheated.) I feel like calculators are toys now - cool toys though. (Tip: If you do use a phone app investigate how accurate they are before you rely on them).
