Not sure if I’d drive to Germany to buy a battery

  • +2

Mr German OP, please modify the store name in the title.

Not all of us have their choppers ready to just buy a battery ;)

  • Doesnt look like they stock DIN85LH-MF AGM on their website. Would it be in store?

    • +1

My experience when looking for a particular battery is if it's not in stock or a special order then they won't even consider getting it in for the sale.
YMMV but call your local and ask.

  • superCharge batteries versus these?

    • -2

Century every day of the week. Australian made and owned.

      • +1

Actually, Century is owned by the Japanese Yausa group.

        • Japanese owned, still made in Australia =)

        • +2

The Exide batteries at Bunnings and some other retailers have a good reputation, better warranty, and will likely offer better value than these at their everyday price.

        • Right you are!

      • +4

FYI: While battery-shopping recently, I found that not all Century are Australian made. Make sure to look for the green and gold kangaroo logo.

      • +2

Only certain batteries are made in Australia. Most of their range is imported from overseas. Look for the 'Made in Australia' logo.

        • Correct, they do state Korea as most of their batteries are made there, however there are substantial claims that the materials and some of the procducts, undisclosed, are in fact made in China
Supercharge Batteries anyday of the week. 100%

          • @Hillagood: Just curious. Why Supercharge? In my experience all premium brand batteries have similar performance. Wouldn’t you pick one that’s fairly priced and had a decent warranty?

            • @Viper123: Supercharge are consistent, honour their warranties, don't falsify where they are manufactured and provide an excellent cost/quality comparison. I have never heard of or coke across a battery from them that was deficient in charge or have a fault. Century on the other hand, I have many times. I would never again put Century as a "Premium Brand"
As for that term there really isn't a premium brand more so than what is considered a reliable consistent brand to which Supercharge is.

      • Hell no. Century aren't what they use to be.

Supercharge Gladiator have a market leading 5 year warranty.

Replaced my 12v yesterday… I swear to God there's always a sale within a week of me buying a new battery.

    • Same just 2 weeks ago! It's the worst feeling.

  • Which Bowden's Own cleaning products are highly recommended by Ozbargain?

    • I just bought two bottles of the wheel cleaner. Wheely Clean I think it's called. Highly recommended.

  • what would i need for a ute (BT50)?

    • you can put your rego in to check which ones are "suitable" for your car - apparently all are "not suitable" for a VE commodore so YMMV

Wish I could buy now and pickup when my current battery dies (probably within 12 months :()

  • Using the search for my vehicle function - apparently, none of the Century batteries are suitable for my 2015 Honda Odyssey. That is strange.

    • Maybe just pop the hood and try use the numbers from the existing battery. Also note the size and orientation of the terminals.

  • Looking for DIN53LH AGM for stop/start hybrid. Any recommended alternatives?

    • +1

Supercharge, comes with 36 month Warranty, really reliable. I'm an Auto Elec by trade and recommend these. Autobarn seem to be the best for pricing.

      • Thanks bro, appreciate your help.

  • +3

Beware these batteries are in fact Chinese made and their quality has dropped dramatically over the past few years.

  • Interesting these are down to 18 month warranty now. I just got a "Repco by Century" ultra last week for the same price but with a 30 month warranty. Also says aus made on the repco branded one I got.

BTW, there is no "random referral link" for Autobarn.

Signing up for "Autobarn accelerate reward" is a 20% off your next in store purchase but excludes items on special (such as these batteries) The 20% off code is provided 24 hours later too.

Random referral for CashRewards, now update in deal.

  • My practice is always to buy the one with a higher warranty, my past experience is the cheaper batteries failed just outside warranty, and the longer warranty ones seem to outperform their warranty.

The other tip is buy one with higher CCA (as long as it fits) as the battery ages, the cranking amps decrease, and not enough CCA means it wont turn the car over.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I think that's decent advice :)

FWIW the batteries on special are 40 months warranty. Supercharge Gold Plus are slightly more expensive than these on special, but I was told the new ones have a 50 month warranty (despite all the pics online still saying 40)

    • Any battery suggestions for a Hyundai i45? I have a 6 year old Hyundai genuine battery NS70 which I wad really happy with, but I find it difficult to find now.

      • +2

The things that count on battery specs is CCA (how hard the battery can crank the engine over) and the dimensions of the battery itself.

If it fits in the space where the battery goes (check visually if there's more room), you can get any 12V battery that has enough CCA.

  • Crap batteries and crap warranty not worth the paper it's printed on. Look elsewhere

    • I've one that's not ultra, just the regular version, and its still going strong over 4 years. Thought it was giving up the ghost, but it turned out to be a fuel vapour valve that made the car harder to start. Interested to hear what your experience was, and about the warranty.

  • One other thing to note, a battery is only as good as the amount it is maintained. You don't just chuck it in the car and forget about it. Needs to be regularly charged and have the occasional maintenance cycle run.
