I don't know why anyone would buy a steel decked Honda mower when the alloy deck mower exists.

    • +1

Some of those models are also built for commercial use. I have a GXV160 AND IT'S A SHERMAN TANK! The build quality is incredible and it has done jobs that a simple alloy deck woulda kinked.

I have a 20+ year old Honda HRU196 and it sure is built like a tank. Starts first time every time still too. Bloody heavy and noisy but gets through thick grass no problem. The other mowers I have feel like cheap rubbish in comparison.

    • What price do they go for?

    • What's the issue with steel deck v alloy?? I'm assuming weight but if that's not an issue then why does it matter?
My mower gets a fair bang around. From very little research it seems steel would deal with this much better because it's more durable than alloy.

      • Steel deck is significantly heavier. The self-drive models make up for that weight issue very easily and when used correctly, you won't even know it's a steel deck.
More heavy duty (usually a gimmick in most things) but they truly are and can take a beating. Rocks, sticks you missed before mowing will not be an issue lol

      • I think alloy won’t have rust issue like steel?

16" is a tiny lawn mower. If you have a really small yard it would be better to get a battery mower and avoid all the hassle of fuel, oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, etc. The 18" isn't too bad for a medium size yard that might be a bit too big for the cheaper battery mowers to handle, especially if you're prone to letting the grass get long.

  • Starts a whole new topic of who has the oldest working mower, and which brand. Me first haha. Masport, from 1995

    • I have a Victa the would predate 1990.

    • Honda HR214 from the mid-80s

      • I have a briggs 5hp rotary hoe from 1978 (i think it is). Still goes like it's new. Did a rebuild a few years back but it's solid as hell. Back when they made things to last lol

    • Got a Rover XL 2-stroke Suzuki engine from ~92 that's still going strong

Scott Bonnar Model 45, 17" solid deck. 1970's, at a guess early 70's based on ID brass plate.

Awwwwww total envy!! Dribbling atm lmao. Was looking at one last year as a resto job but they want $2k- not working lol. Didn't get it

  • Just be aware that Honda stop making/selling patrol mowers in US, they closed the mower engine factory there.

  • While on the topic of mowers, any deals or recommendations on battery mowers? Preferably 36v+ volt. I have a Victa 18V and while when i got it, it was "okay" its pretty well rubbish now 3yrs on and not really worth getting a battery as its just hasnt got enough power.

I have a Stihl RMA 510V and 4 petrol mowers. I still find the petrol ones more enjoyable to use as they are easy to throw around and never struggle. The battery mower bogs down, cut quality isn’t as good and it really struggles on longer grass. Also not a big fan of the self propelled which locks the wheels for a few seconds when you want to turn, I much prefer to push.

Fair, I like the idea of battery for the convenience of not having to get petrol and no maintenance. The other issue I have is I have a slopped block with a few tiers so battery mowers with a plastic base are quite handy as they are lighter and easy to carry when I need to.

I have an EGO and a Honda HRU19 that I use commercially. I prefer the EGO for about 90% of jobs. Plenty of power and a 7.5ah battery can do about 3 yards. The Honda only gets used on really big and overgrown places now.

not a deal, but definitely a recommendation.

Some people put all Electric mowers in the same basket. Much like Petrol mowers you get your cheap ones and your good ones. For long term use i would advise in investing in a more expensive & better quality one.

Also, if you have a specific power tool platform i'd suggest looking up what mower options they have, that way you can use the same batteries on both and don't need to worry about investing into different batteries. For all of my DIY i use makita tools, and i love them, so accordingly i have a makita electric mower. I've seen makita have some cheaper mowers (which i can't comment on the quality as i haven't used them, all i can say is they LOOK cheaper).

I invested in a makita DLM532ZX. Again, the DLM532ZX is not a cheap mower, but i would HIGHLY recommend it. I've been using mine for over a year and it's extremely robust, runs like a tank (without all the noise), and I've used it for just general mowing as well as on wet tall grass. With the Wet tall grass it cuts through it with ease, but should note that it chews through the batteries quicker, but that was never a problem for me because it has 4 batteries slots and i only need to use 2 for my entire property.
I was so happy with my makita mower that i sold my petrol honda mower. I have nothing against honda mowers, i just wanted to minimise my work/funds maintaining or filling up the mowers.

      Maintenance:
Some people seem to think that Electric mowers require no maintenance, this is wrong. Much like a petrol mower if you want it to live for a long long time you will need to maintain it, grant it the maintenance require is MUCH less than a petrol mower. No need to clean carbs, check spark, clean out air filters etc. But you will still need to obviously replace/sharpen the blades & clean it out every now and then to make sure there is no grass getting caught where it shouldn't.

    Do the wonders ever cease?

I guess we’ll find out next month

  • bunnings does not have HRG466

  • HRG466 does not have mulching option. Is that important?

  • -1

most likely because of the recall.
    https://powerequipment.honda.com.au/owners/recalls

    • That recall has nothing to do with these mowers.

    • Had no idea of this recall, will book mine in tomorrow. Thanks for heads up.
