        Save the planet, stop driving.

        • Stop breeding, oh wait, Elon is againt it Lol

      • Since when did people buying ANY car take the environment into consideration?

    • Trump and Desantis are buddy buddy with Elon tho, what's going on there?

  • +2

    7m is $301.50

    • Would the extra 2m be worth it?

      • +1

An extra 2m length is practically useful. whether it is priced well is your call.

  • Just bought it for $230 last week.Damn.

  • Quite new to EV, I have a wallcharger, what would this be used for ?

    • +2

When you are out and about to use non Tesla chargers. Download PlugShare app to see all chargers around you on a map.

      • Thanks!

        • +1

Keep it with you at all times for free charging at AC chargers. Type 2 docks don't generally have cable.
Max charging might be limited to 11kw for teslas

To be clear - Fast public chargers (<50kW) will always have a special high-power cable provided.

However, the slow, cheaper chargers often seen in public carparks and at motels don't have a cable - you're expected to bring your own with Type 1 or Type 2 plug to suit your car. The cable that's being sold here is intended to be kept in your car, so you can access those chargers.

You could go for years without needing one of these cables depending on the places you tend to visit, but for those who have access to a cheap or free charger, or need to recharge in some regional outback town, they're invaluable.

        • To be extra clear - the slow, cheaper chargers often seen in public carparks and at motels SOMETIMES don't have a cable.

There is a mix of tethered and untethered public EVSE's. The untethered ones is where you need this cable.

  • Hi All, I need a suggestion. Can i buy this 32A kwik portable charger and avoid buying and installing home wall charger as i already have 3 pin 32 amp socket in the front yard. Leaning towards portable
    https://evse.com.au/product/portable-ev-charger-32amp/
What are the pros and cons and other suggestions please.

    • Replying to myself,
      $800 portable vs >$2000 charger+installation. Both 7kw.

      • Thanks for that. That difference is too significant. I don't have a 32amp socket though so that's an additional cost for me. Any idea how much to have one installed?

        • +1

Sorry not sure how much it costs, it already was installed when i bought the house. Found this one too, can switch between different Amps but not our standard flat 3 pin.

Installing a 32A socket would be similar in price to hard wiring an EVSE, as its 95% the same job.

          • @loksmack: The secondary consideration is whether the charger is controlling the charging, either through a schedule or other measurements like spare solar capacity. The ChargeHQ website can talk to a number of smart chargers to do this, if the charger supports OCPP and an Internet connection. There are electricity providers (eg OVO) that have special plans for EV drivers with 8c/kWh between 12pm and 6am each night (needs a smart meter as well).

Or just use a wall plug and turn it on when needed. Some of the EVs will do their own scheduled charging.

Also avoid range anxiety by working out how many km you drive 90-95% of the time. The cars use about 16 - 20kWh/100km, so you can then see how many hours it will take to charge back up at 32A/7kW. Even using a normal house 10A socket with the "granny charger" that comes with most cars will probably give about 80km of range charging at 10A/2.4kW for 6 hours. That might cover a lot commutes for a lot of people.

      • The BYD CEO was spruiking a wallbox about 500dlrs under the EVswitch brand. Supposed to launch in sept but seems to have gone quiet.

      • To be fair, you could get a hard wired EVSE for around $700, and installation would be cheap as chips if it was just replacing the existing outlet with the hard wired EVSE (not running a new circuit). $2k+ is way too high of an estimate.

        • Can you please suggest one, the problem with using our own electrician is the product warranty

          • +1

@Hasslefree: Tesla Wall Connector, ZJBeny to name a couple.

            • +1

@loksmack: Yep i went for the tesla wall connector ($750) and installation was $650 which also included a couple of extra powerpoints around the house (just standard 10A points). I like that its a neat design with the cable wrapped around it. A portable EVSE wouldnt look as neat but it would be just as functional.

              • @ialam99: Nice one. I have the Wall Connector as well and use it to charge my Tesla and BYD. Works perfect with both cars, and looks great.

    • Is it running a separate cable from the box. If yes then this should be a good bet

    • You pay for the smarts it can do. Such as scheduled charging during solar excess, integration with apps to take advantage of wholesale prices if you are with Amber, overcharging protection etc. Otherwise, it's no different to charging cable, relying on your car to provide the smarts.

I have bought it from these guys before and they offer 3 year warranty:

    Maybe try price beating too.

    • Looks identical based on the photos

      • The 22kw one would be a bit heavier, however otherwise identical on the outside.

  • FWIW, I bought one from ebay for ~$105, it has the same thickness as my Gen3 wall connector cable.

It works fine and never had a problem.

    • +3

It works fine until it doesn't, I suppose. Personally speaking, for a $80,000 vehicle that's running high voltage through to the battery, that $100 savings is not worth the risk (for me) of getting one that isn't Australian standards certified and the occasional dud one.

      • +2

evse is selling an unbranded cable, likely from China and similar in quality from the ones on ebay. If you really want a good cable get Mennekes cable from Germany which Tesla sells at a good price.

    • +1

I got one from eBay too. Seems to be working fine. Time will tell. I'll report back in 2 years time.

  • +1

It’s just a cable without any chips or sensors, and I’m not worried unless it’s running hot. (Both the car and charger will cut off the power if there is a problem)

  • Is this cable compatible with the Fronius Wattpilot go 22j portable charger? Pls suggest.TIA

    https://evse.com.au/product/fronius-wattpilot-go-22-j-2-0-au…

    • Hi starlightshine,

      Yes it is!

      Kind regards,
      sad fish

      • Hi rep, where are your EV charging cables sourced from? Are they imported?

  • Can you use the 22KW cable in a 7KW "charger" I know the bottom 2 pins are not used for single phase power. Are they just ignored?

  • Pretty sure you can get these cheaper off eBay stacked with coupon or eBay plus deals.

    As to quality however 🤷
