Fantastic price for an excellent lens. Bought a Sony camera specifically for this lens. Paid $1380 mid this year and that was a decent deal.

  • Just thinking out loud, given its f4 not f2.8 wouldn't Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 be a better option in similar price range?

it depends how much you value 20-24mm. you can crop from 70mm to get 105

Yeah you're right, depends on the use case but personally I went for the 24-105 just for the extra zoom.

      • This. There was a Youtube video that discussed the reasons for the 20-70 and it is very useful for vlogging and landscape photography. With the newer A7-series camera, you can easily crop to get 105mm without losing too much resolution. Also the 24-105 is an older design and many newer lens has surpassed it when it comes to optical resolution (resolving power) and sharpness.

For me, I was tossing between this, 24-105 f4, and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.

Between this and the 24-105, the 24-105 is 5+ years old (i.e. new model soon maybe and lots more opportunities to buy secondhand), and this 20-70 is sharper. I also read quite a bit of ppl bought this to replace their 24-105. There are rumours of a 24-105 mark 2 coming within 12-18 months, if I had to speculate, this time next year. If there is a mark 2 which is smaller, lighter, sharper than the current 24-105, I'd get that and sell this. Whether you appreciate the extra wideness or extra reach will probably be up to individual preference. That said I have seen the 24-105 going for $850 on eBay which if you can snap it up, would be excellent value.

At this price vs the MSRP, and being quite a new lens, I figured it's a fairly safe purchase as even if it didn't suit me, I hope to be able to sell it off without a loss (or too significant a loss) down the line and be able to use it all the time until then.

      • Let us know how good it is cause no doubt it will be good :D

I sold the 24-105mm and bought the 20-70mm on a Sony deal for the same price as the HN deal. It's a great lens, very sharp and light. I'm actually using it on a shoot in Europe at the moment. I am missing the extra length of the 105mm, but working around it. The plan was to buy the new 70-200 G2 which would have been a perfect companion to the 20-70mm, but I wanted a better price. Those two lenses make a great vlogging/location kit.

  • Bought one. Now all I need is a camera to fit this lens.

    • Use your phone camera with it

      • 🤣. I would rather wait for a good deal on A7R IV.

R IV? Get secondhand? Looks to be around $2.6k based on eBay sold history.

  • How good this lens with sony a6400?

this would be for full frame emount, get the smaller/lighter/cheaper lenses in the aps-c lineup?
