PSA: New iPhone announcement next week. But considering a potential price increase and 15-20% savings this might be good for some.

    • +4

I'm really hoping the price increase is only for the US to catch up to what they are charging everywhere else. Otherwise these things will be wayy too expensive.

      • +6

Waste of money. Apple knows how to milk out showing off loyal clever! customers.

        • -6

          Careful. ISheep are very touchy

        • +11

Yep, make high quality products, high quality software, all with reliable and easy integration into devices and services within the ecosystem, of which are all high quality and great products. It keeps bringing people back. I hate the price, but after a decade on android, I wish I did it sooner honestly. They do a lot right.

          • @onlinepred: Yeah disagree with a lot of that. Apple's productivity apps including Calendar, Mail, Notes etc are SO ugly and have such poor UI.

iPhones are easy but that's about it.

I have an iPhone, Galaxy Fold, iPad Pro 12.9 and Surface laptop so I'm platform agnostic. I use an iPad because it's simply better than Android tables. Can't say the same for phones for the last 10 years. iOS adds features that others had 5 years ago, the notch/dynamic island is a hideous eyesore Jobs would never have allowed and as mentioned above, the native apps are rubbish

            • +1

@jay889344: How many included apps do you use on your Surface?

            • @jay889344: Ummm apple notes and reminders are far more powerful and far more user friendly than google keep haha. I’ve only just moved to iPhone after over a decade of android. Calendar is better on I
IOS but needs a month view with details, but I use google calendar and a mix of apple calendar widgets as they are way better looking, with zero issues. I use gmail and removed mail so zero issues.
After using the island, I find it does add value with music shortcuts and map shortcuts. Better than just having a black circle IMO as anything takes away from watching content anyway. It’s like the notification bar in android kinda.

I’ve had google products through my house and have found over the years the smart speakers have gotten worse, and google tv is obviously not as good as Apple TV, of which I just got a few weeks ago and wish I got it sooner. It’s by far the superior software and hardware.

Anyway, each to their own, but not liking a few built in apps doesn’t mean the whole ecosystem, integration, software and hardware is rubbish. We all know many of googles apps are below average, and have been for a long long time.

              • @onlinepred: Each to their own indeed. I've also been using iOS everyday since 07 (even had the original iPhone that never came to Oz so I've been using iPhone longer than nearly anyone in this country) and it's an easy choice which I pick up if I can pick up either to do what I need..

Gmail is far better than Mail, Google Calendar is far better than Calendar and I don't know how notes is better than anything. It's so plain and low featured.

Anyway, as you said, each to their own but as someone who's used both every day for decades, it's not close on phones. Android easily. On tablets, it's not close either to me. IPad easily

Platform agnostic as I said but that's my take and if it differs from you, that's fine

Lastly, don't kid yourself with dynamic island or the notch. They're both hideous and cut wayyyyyy too much into the screen. How people watch things on those phones is beyond me. I quickly tired if watchibg a show or game and not seeing the face on someone near the edge As notch or dynamic island cut it out. It's absolutely hideous and Jobs would never have allowed that. Anyone who knows what he was about knows that. As someone in tech supply chain/manufacturing, trust me when I say this - the second Apple figure out how to embed the FaceID sensors under OLED pixels, notch and dynamic island are gone. It's a horrible compromise they had to make and they'll get rid of it as soon as they possibly can. They're pushing hard to as they have been for years now.

Also, how after 16 years have they still not fixed Autocorrect? Still will correct something you meant to type, then when you go back and retype the same thing, it corrects again and again. Seriously….

                • @jay889344: Example of Google Calendar vs Apple Calendar. From someone that uses calendar daily, and has used Google Calendar for over a decade. Adjusting time past 12 moves am/pm in apple calendar, google does not. Apple calendar allows for transit time. Using repeat is far easier and quicker with less clicks. Apple Schedule shows far more data cleanly over Google Calendar adding colours and pictures to things.
Google Files is the most basic of file explorers. Compared to Apple Files where you can even sign PDFs.
If you think Google Keep is better than Apples Notes or Apple Reminders, you clearly haven't used it.
Then you get to updates, of which android updates happen far quicker, and seamlessly, but often cause the phone to heat up, sometimes updates cause excessive battery drain and require a reboot. Apple updates take far longer, and require a reboot, but this happens during the night automatically, and so far in 2 years I haven't noticed any issues, compared directly to my Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 pro work phones which constantly get slow downs, battery is unreliable, and it randomly heats up while doing updates.
Overall, I was done with fiddling with roms/updates of android, and just wanted a phone that does the basics extremely reliably and well. That's iPhone. If you do more advanced things on your phone, then android is the way. It's come a long way, and does some things that iPhone doesn't, but for the basics iOS smashes android out of the ballpark.
Agreed autocorrect is below average, but for me, it's something I'm more than happy to deal with given the rest of the OS and it's gains. Google has amazing services, but on average, their software is below average, often varying levels of effort/design and they rarely even follow the same design or usability. Android is getting better and better as an operating system, but it's still a drop in the ocean when it misses out on the integration to an ecosystem of high quality software and hardware.

                  • @onlinepred: We agree to disagree and that's fine. I could write another essay but I'll leave it there and just say this - ecosystem wise, agree Apple is better. Software wise though, I'll take Android all day. iOS is nowadays just adding features that Android introduced 5 years ago with each iOS release

Home and lockscreen widgets, multitasking, copy/paste, swipe texting, notification bar and the list goes on and on. Not to mention the hardware 'leaps' aside from the M1 chips are made by Sony, Samsung and LG who compromise about 80% of what's in our iPhones anyway. Apple hasn't really innovated with phones since the original iPhone in 07 which was a gamechanger and arguably iPhone X which changed the UI to gesture based.

Android manufacturers meanwhile are now the ones pushing the envelope in terms of innovation with phones. In 5 years Apple will bring out a foldable phone and fanboys will rejoice and gloat about how good it is, just like they did with all the other features that came to Android well before iOS.

Wow that ended up longer than I thought! LOL. I truly want to see Apple innovate again. In the Jobs era, you could have called me a fanboy for sure. I just miss that Apple

                    • @jay889344: I think apple wait until they can do it properly honestly. Ask the fold phones with all their issues, even the pixel fold relies on third party developers to make use of it, which means it won’t happen. Never said apple innovate, they don’t. They just make high quality reliable software and hardware. That’s all I need these days. I don’t need innovation of a phone, I need a phone that lasts all day reliably. I take photos, videos, manage emails and IMs, browse the internet, edit 4k video from phone, and use apps. All of my use cases have been as good or better on iPhone. Battery life has been unbelievable too. I don’t need apps using battery and running in the background, use device workers instead like iPhone does.

Anyway like you said, you must be a super advanced user multitasking everything and playing demanding games, torrenting, paying for quality apps to do things apple does out of the box etc etc.

                      • @onlinepred: Fair enough! My experience has been the opposite and I only use my iPhone each day when I need to. Anything that can be done on either, I'll grab the Galaxy Fold every time.

I guess this kind of debate and varied experience is good though. We need strong options from competitors to facilitate and drive competition, but most importantly innovation

                        • @jay889344: My first two galaxy folds were returned more than once with screen layer coming off, 3rd one (fold 3) had a crack develop on the bend after barely 8 months, 4th one is going well but barely use it, only for work. Hate Samsung software though, duplicated apps, Bixby is literally the worst except when doing ITTT, and of course delayed updates/security patches. If you dislike Apple software, then you must HATE samsung software! Love the technical idea, but the narrow front screen is terrible compared to Pixel fold, and lack of proper water resistance and dodgy fold mechanics with a sky high price is just realistically living on the beta edge of android.

                          • @onlinepred: Yeah the first few folds were very much experimental and I also returned them to go back to a 'candybar' style, but that's the same of any new innovation really. Foldable technology was really cutting edge 5 years ago. I just got the Fold 5 a few weeks ago and it's so good. Battery is vastly improved, the fold closes completely and the screen is just beautiful and so much nicer to use than any other phone.

Also, couldn't agree more re Bixby. It's SO s#&t. Siri is better but Siri is still generally acknowledged by most tech experts to be nowhere near as good as Google or Alexa. They're ahead on them at front but they're all far ahead of Bixby. Samsung just need to save money, shut Bixby down and just use Google assistant

                            • @jay889344: Yea I use Google Assistant around the house, which has been getting worse as of lately, but Siri for starting timers and that's it. Google is easily the best, but if I am getting an android phone, it's going to be a pixel. If only Samsung would do a pixel phone already. Just need a Pixel with Samsung hardware. If they did that, I wouldn't have left.

                              • @onlinepred: Agree! I'd also go for that. Remember when they basically did once? Those Samsung Galaxy Nexus phones or whatever they were called? They were decent at the time.

Clean Google OS is definitely better than Samsung UI though I do like some of the little touches on Samsung OneUI like swiping left on someone in your contact list to text them or right to call for example. And in general with Android, being able to have apps I rarely ever use but still need (Medicare, MyGov etc) in an app drawer instead of the OS insisting I put them somewhere on my homescreen either as an icon or in a folder. That flexibility I really like.

Imagine if Apple were to license iOS like Google do Android. Would be cool to see! Imagine a Samsung iPhone. They'd never do it but fun to imagine

                                • @jay889344: You can delete app shortcuts from your Home Screen. They go into the drawer that’s organised in groups. I never used it on android or iOS, just swipe down and search + enter.

Samsung galaxy google edition. I think it was s4. I imported it haha. It was good but no updates and aosp was so limited back then.

                                  • @onlinepred: Apologies you're right! That ability came last year or year before with App drawer (FINALLY). Was shitting me having to put rarely used apps on homescreen as icons or in a folder

Another one - for the love of God, how are we closing apps on iPhones one by one still?!? Close all button PLEASE

Haha I did the same! Was fun. I also fondly remember my days jailbreaking the first iPhone to do things as simple as enable the original iPhone and iPhone 3G to do video as they were picture only

                                    • @jay889344: You don’t close apps on iPhone hehe. No need as they don’t run in the background. It allows quick loading of states as they are stored in memory/storage to quickly load the app at where you left it. So by closing the app, and then opening it later, it consumes more battery. Just let the OS do its thing- it’s why iOS is so good with battery! In android yes it can be important to close apps.

Haha I remember loading android pre release on my windows mobile phone before there was an android phone haha, no data/wifi/sound/ability at all though.

                                      • @onlinepred: Haha it's actually the same with both! They don't drain in background on Android either and that's even with actual multitasking but still….put a damn 'close all' there. LOL

Haha that's cool! It's funny how those things bring back nostalgia for those of us who did that stuff back then.

iOS battery life is defs good, but probably also helped by the fact the homescreen and lockscreen widgets are much more limited and sometimes don't work at all. Eg. The mail widget on my iPhone 14 Pro Max homescreen right now is still showing emails from Monday at the top of the widget as if they're my latest emails. Buggy AF even though iOS widgets are so much more limited in utility and how customisable they are 😭

I think people overlook US not including tax in the purchase price, which varies by state over there.

Back in the day people also didn’t seem to factor in that a $99 or $199 iPhone was on top of a 2 year plan commitment in the US. It took a while for US sales to move to outright purchase and not exclusively through carriers. This is less relevant now as carriers have largely shifted away from that model.

There are cases where we may see a bit of a premium, but on the whole I don’t think Apple prices are generally too off the mark locally. Since they only re-index prices once or twice a year, if the dollar is unstable then it can lead to some larger than normal rates being applied however to account for forecasted worsening of the AUD prior to the next baseline.

The impact of this of course is that we should expect any US price increases for the Pro model to be passed onto us locally too.

        • You need to use the currency exchange rate for last year which is about 1 AUD = 0.72 USD.
So AUD1749 = USD1259, which is about AUD256 higher than US

        • -1

Hold up, but all those years post GFC when Australia had a higher than parity vs US, did we see apple products being cheaper than US? Or are we selective exchange rate choosing

          • @D3m3ntia: The AUD never really got far ahead enough of the USD to allow the sticker price to be lower in Australia, as the AU pricing also had to include 10% GST.

The US prices are pre tax, and at its best the exchange rate was around 1.1 in 2011, so realistically parity was probably all that was realistic.

            https://www.macrotrends.net/2551/australian-us-dollar-exchan…

As I noted above, US pricing for phones in the earlier years were also heavily focused on carrier subsidised contracts, unlike other markets. The figures in most press for US pricing was the cost of the phone on a two year plan commitment.

      • Mate, checkout the exchange rate!

    • +3

I remember back when iphone X use to be 900 bux now 2-3k for a phone is ridiculous

      • +1

iPhone X is much cheaper now.

    I can't even use all my 256GB…

    • +3

Have you called Apple Support ?

    • +27

Did you block jv? My 1TB iPhone is packed with bold messages

    • Yeah I can’t imagine why someone would need 1TB these days.

      • +8

        high res video

        • +1

This, if you have to think why would I need 1TB on a phone you most likely don't need it. People who take a lot of high res videos most certainly need it.

          • @thesmartone1125: People with young kids or babies need it to take the huge catalogue of photo and video

            • @motlking: Yep exactly, but I think it's mostly videos that chews your storage. Since most people wont have the full res 48MP option on and the image will be the compressed to 12MP.

        • +2

For those curious, a quick google result shows that HDR ProRes Video uses about 1.7GB of storage per a minute of video.

Apple don’t even allow you to capture at the max resolution on a 128GB model device as you’d burn through storage too quickly.

For most people, shooting in 4K ProRes is probably completely overkill and not worth the storage premium, I’d say.

Besides that, travel for extended periods where you don’t have access to good internet to allow you to backup to cloud is a use case for extended local storage.

        • +1

If you want to have 10 full series of various shows at once I guess you need 1T. I only have 2 or 3 seasons on mine for the train at a time and I’ve never filled the 128gig but it gets close

      • +1

can’t imagine why someone would need 1TB these days.

        "Content creation"

      • The app builder will make that happen one day

      • +1

lossless audio or proRAW images would stack up pretty quickly too

    • I installed offline Wikipedia, 95GB with pics, priceless! Another 100 GB is music library.

      • 100gig of music? Is there a download all button on Spotify haha

        • I use "iTunes Match" subscription, $35/year - add your music mp3's on Mac, match songs with Apple, listen all of iCloud Library on iPhone.
There is a custom Shortcut that you can run, that downloads all your library to the phone. It creates "Entire Library" playlist for this purpose :)

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah nice one mate.. if you have downloaded lots of files that would be a decent slab

            • @Capitalshark: i got 13 Pro 512GB year ago, $1600 officework deal

      • I used to have Wikipedia offline but the app stopped working. How have you got it as I’d love to have it again.

    • Have maxed out my 256gb iPhone XS
Gotta start using onedrive and move some photos and vids off device

Just a few years ago we were complaining about phone going over 1000 dollars.
    2k for a phone…. Good lawd!

    • +3

I remember when you used to pay nearly $1500 for a smart phone that could barely load web pages, take photos that looked like game renders from the 90s, the best games you could play were solitaire, and the screens were so small you could barely make use of them, and the second it rained you would freak out and try and cover them.

These days you get a lot nfor what you pay for honestly. You can even get budget phones that cost far less if you don't prioritise certain things.
