Is This What Becoming a Neighbour Has Come to These Days?

We recently moved into a new home and neighbourhood almost 2 weeks ago now. We have a dead tree in our back yard that had a large branch fall off in a recent storm, further the whole garden just needed some care with another tree being way to close to the house. I hired a company to come to the property for 4 hours and remove the dead tree (since it still had potential to fall and hurt someone) as well as trim back the other tree. Other works included removing any dead plants throughout the backyard garden. This all happened with no issues, so I thought. Just for the next day to receive the below message, in handwritten form. She knocked on the door, yelled you have a note and left.

The note;
"To: the would be Neighbour Killers -
On Wednesday morning 2 arrogant, ignorant, moorons stoood on the Boundary fence line - the day windy - & started not one, but two chainsaws- sending toxic fumes of smoke rolling straight over the fence and into my unit"

You can read the rest of it in this link;

https://ibb.co/pZLL0PV

She basically goes on to say she's recently gotten out of hospital and can't breathe (fair enough), and the community is full of senior citizens with medical problems (again fair enough).

She's quite angry in the note.. and has accused me of trying to kill her and the rest of the neighbours. She's said a copy of the note will be given to police in the case of her death.

I'm thinking don't worry, they will already have a copy.

Again my only crime is trying to make my backyard safe by removing a dead tree so my young can play there.

  1. Is this normal? Wouldn't it make sense to knock on the door and ask nicely, or better yet close your window for a maximum of 4 hours.
  2. I'm I missing something here? surely I'm allowed to do maintenance in my own backyard. It's not like it's being done at midnight.
  3. Do petrol chainsaws have that much smoke?
  4. What would be the appropriate actions to take from here onwards?

Surely none of the above constitute trying to murder someone? Is this what becoming a neighbour has come to these days?

"would be" killer? So she's insulting your ability to kill as well? How rude

Pop a copy of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for her with a not sawing leatherface might be swinging by later

  • Are you in Canberra - Was it this lady ?

I learned my face off when I saw this.

'stick it up your f*****n ar$e'

    • I'm perplexed by the old biddy's accusation: "You haven't got a brain in your arse"

The bloke could & should have uploaded the footage of the old lady moving the rocks, to nail HER arse.

neighbour be dead soon, problem will sort it self out

  • There’s always been crazies but I know the pain of dealing with fumes/smoke.

I’d rather you be maintaining than this.

On the other hand I tried to tell people in my area to not burn shit wood in their fires eg treated pallets, green wood. Because one night the suburb was covered from someone fireplace. I got told I was a effing sook etc and I should close my windows, all because someone wanted to ‘save money and not freeze to death’ in a semi metro area.

Ironically unless you live in a city bubble, fuel reduction burns and bushfire smoke is as bad, (carcinogenic) .[ But there's big bucks in the 'fire industry'.]
And ditto for invisible daily metro air pollutants health impacts.
Just because we don't see or smell it, doesn't mean it aint doing long term harm. And yes no-one should be surprised that selfish ppl burn CCA wood to keep warm.

  • Write back that according to the property laws, you are fully entitled to trim any branches that enter your yard and tell her to get "lost".
Tell her that not everyone is a mind reader and doesn't need to notify her of trimming the tree that is on your side and also tell her if her tree
grows back over, you will trim again and branches will be send back over to her yard, as you are again covered by this by the property laws.

Yes, This Is What Becoming a Neighbour Has Come to These Days. Literally Every Neighbour Everywhere Is Like This.

    • Are you Tom Gleeson?

  • She's actually delusional.

Sending thoughts and prayers your way, hopefully another thread will come up soon for you to shitpost on 👍

  • Yeah yeah … neighbors are forked, found a puppy, found the owner gave it back, they ring police claim I stole it … angry copper fell for the BS and sent all sorts of nastiness my way … all forked in the heads!

  • Classic Karen having a bad day - Unfortunately she is your neighbour, sorry that happened to you.

Get some cctv, this karen definitely going to do something sneaky

  • They're just stroking their rage muscle. If they were actually worried about the smoke's effects on their health they could have come over to say something at the time.

  • Decent amount of the population are crazy or stupid and that means there are some that are both. Ignore and move on.

"a copy of the note will be given to police in the case of her death."

Classic. Make sure to troll her every now and then because shes too easy.

  • time to start a backyard chainsaw company

  • Old biddy will be dead soon (either by the chainsaw fumes, my her stress levels, or her feeble mind).

Either way, don't worry about it and completely ignore this moron.

  • Just ignore completely, and do whatever you need to do in your garden/house without thinking twice.
Smile and wave at her in the most friendly way possible every time you see her. If she comes over to confront you just say she's absolutely right, smile, and tell her only nice things. This will make her blood boil much more than any angry reaction and at the same time you will have done absolutely the right thing from every point if view and aspect

  • So I’m guessing the cranky neighbour didn’t pay half of the tradie bill?

Eugh fuk living near old relics like that

    Oxygen thieves

  • They might have had a point or two but its importance would have evaporated into nothing if I had received a ridiculous letter like that.

Maybe… I would make an attempt to knock on the door and resolve the bad tension but the wording gives off strong mental midget vibes. Sorry you have to live with that.

  • Is this normal? Wouldn't it make sense to knock on the door and ask nicely, or better yet close your window for a maximum of 4 hours.

Today's world yes. My area made the news after a "Karen" person was sending out letters complaining about pretty much everything. Contained Raciest remarks, Admitting to spying on kids. Complaining about any noise.
The thing I found the funniest was they where attempting to frame me.

The person who I suspect actually was behind the whole thing would do the whinging about whatever I was doing in person. "Stop your dog from peeing on the fence it stinks out here." My first thought was wouldn't there be residue on the fence or concrete if a dog was peeing on this side? Unless you think my female dog has the ability to climb a 6 foot fence to pee on your side? Before climbing the fence and returning back here with out a care in the world. All this with a deformed back leg!

The reality of the stink was nut/berry things that the trees in their yard produces and when they rot they stink like pee. The trees produce a lot of them so the stink level is max. Before June I was told they would soon start attempting to remove some of the trees, Still haven't started and they are about to flower so the stinky nut/berries wont be far away.

  • It's generally good practice to let your neighbours know there's going to be a loud party at your place after hours.
That might also extend to letting your neighbours know there's going to be chainsaws in use when planning tree-felling work, too.

Just a thought. Shame, you had no idea your immediate neighbour was fresh off the drip

  • Scare tactic success

  • High time for you to raise a pitbull.

  • Get your kids some music stuff and get a meat smoker or firepit and get some block her view.

  • Who knows how people's brains change as they age or get sick, etc.?

Best write an apology letter saying you thought the arborists would be using electric chainsaws and include a bunch of flowers or small cake, whatever.

  • hospital should have put her on heavier meds

  • 2 Stroke mower puts out as much toxic death smoke as a chainsaw - Woman is a crank, on the plus side, she might be dead soon.

    @jman10
All jokes aside, as someone who unfortunately has had repeated run in's with a neighbour we believe to be mentally unstable I'd advise:
    - do not send anything back to escalate or antagonise the neighbour, sounds like you acted completely legally and so pointing this out & local laws etc will get you nowhere
    - retain the note, take pictures of it and start a document diarising such incidents - hopefully you never need it but IF a major issue occurs, you will be able to document the interaction with the neighbours to Police &/or authorities
    - although it's not strictly required it may be worth just a basic note to say you're doing anything similar to that in the future in the letterbox of affected neighbours, document that you did it - sometimes it takes the steam out of their anger & shows you're making an effort

As much as it sucks I'd really resist ANYTHING to wind this person up further - there's clearly some mental health issues at play and while it's all funny now, there's a million things they can do which will end up being a major PITA for you. So best just to smile, wave or not react at all - don't bad mouth her to other neighbours, it'll likely get back to her. Alas you're stuck with her for a while so best you dot your i's and cross your t's where it's easy - as she likely has little better to do than stuff like this so if it comes to a game of crazy, she's going to win.

Folks on here with no skin in the game will advise to do all kinds of stuff - that'll just make things worse - and once it ratchets up with a crazy person it's very hard to bring it back to sanity - so just follow the normal rules and how you'd like to be treated and I'm sure she'll move on to whatever next gets under her skin. :-)

  • OP's story reminds me of the Watcher on Netflix LOL

Dad bought new house in a nice area, regret every moment of it when he had obsessed Karen neighbors.
