Damn…..I got this for $88, though, don't really care, totally worth it. Way better than the basic Navmans (I had a EZY15….should be called POS15)

im in the same situation as you. the ezy15 is SO slow, even turning off takes a long time. love the responsiveness of the nuvi 50

  • Getting cheaper and cheaper.

    Don't forget the 40c :p

  • I bought the TomTom XL Classic 4.3" today for $78.40 and am wondering if I should've taken this instead. It wasn't listed on jbhifi.com.au and I didn't bother to check on jbhifionline.com.au. Hmmm…

TomTom charge $99/year for map updates. I'd take the TomTom back (if you can) and get the Nuvi.

Or if you have a recent iPhone, iOS6 will include free turn-by-turn navigation in October.

or you could just get a cheap android phone now….

Note that the "lifetime maps" means the working life of the unit, so until they feel the device is too old or can't support more updates, which is usually 3 years.

        • That's good to know. That would make it more or less similar to TomTom's current bonus offer: 12 bonus maps (+2 years HD traffic on selected GPS units) over 3 years guaranteed.

      • its unfair to compare an unreleased, first version of Apple's software (which will most likely fail to provide fast GPS location/voice control/spoken street & place names/downloaded maps & millions of POIs/live traffic updates/intelligent routing/advanced lane guidance/etcetera).

of course I would be happy to be wrong, and pleasantly surprised if Apple delivers the goods, but when Google, Nokia and Microsoft don't so far have anything that offers all these features in their free navigation software, there is simply no argument for giving up a cheap dedicated unit with a large screen, to use a slow and poorly featured app on your phone that drops out every time you get a phone call.

      • Australia not guaranteed to have turn by turn navigation when iOS6 launches - http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/09/ios-6-wont-have-turn-by-tu…

  • i bought this a few months ago, and lately it locks up at least twice a week, usually when it encounters speed camera warnings. It's a known issue, google it. It's annoying as you need to hold the power button down for 10 seconds straight to fix it. If you don't notice it's locked, it will stay lit up like a christmas tree even if the keys are out of the car until it goes flat.

I also have a 2595LMT about the same age (3 months) and it was great for a while, but two days ago it was crashing, freezing etc and even stayed in night mode for 10 minutes during bright sunshine. I was in the middle of nowhere with little clue where to turn next, and the thing just turned off. (while charging)

My first Garmin i had (which was stolen by a valet parker) many years ago was fantastic, and the three i've had since then have been a disappointment.

Cheap price though, you might get a good one.

  • purchased this yesterday online for an in-store pickup tomorrow…thanks for the heads-up :)

    • I have just received my Garmin but it does not say anything about Life-time-updates.

What did you have to do to get them?

      Tks

  • Does anybody know whether you can load US maps onto it, how to do it and whether you would have to purchase the US maps separately?
