This is as much of a PSA as it is a deal.

I recently tried to find a mechanic who'd charge by the half hour and be prepared to let me bring my own fluid and filter. Everyone wanted to charge for the warranty on labour and nobody cool with me supplying my own consumables. I eventually found a bloke but he kept screwing me around with bookings.

This here's a Groupon offering BYO oil & filter changes or/and rates including fully or semi synth and filter.

  • $60: BYO oil and filter
  • $105: semi-synthetic oil and filter supplied, up to 4.5L
  • $125: full-synthetic oil and filter supplied, up to 4.5L

Located in Reservoir in Victoria (U44 2 Cobham Street)

From the Groupon copy:
Technicians offer conventional, semi-synthetic, or synthetic oil change services, which ensure that vehicle's engine is running smoothly

Buying the oil and filter takes longer than changing them.

    • +2

I get often mine delivered, used to change myself but I'm now old and have no interest in working out where to dispose of my used and how to get under a vehicle that's so near the bitumen I might as well stop eating for a week before hand.

      • +3

Dispose of your old oil at supercheap auto or similar. You should teach a youngster how to do it, then they will learn a great DIY skill, and you get it done for free ;-)

        • If I had a personal drive or/and garage I'd probly still be doing it myself. Renting's problematic, some leases stipulate no mechanical servicing or repairs in parking areas.

        • +2

          Great idea!

Son: dad, can I use the car next week?
Me: only if you wash it and change the oil this week.

          • @eciuj: How are y with helicoil application?

            • +1

              @0jay: More learning opportunities!

      • +1

I lol'd, thanks for the laugh!

    • Car dependent.

  • +3

The deal for ozbargainers! Aldi sunflower oil + stolen toilet roll!

    • +1

Or collect some gutter oil and reclaim some used toilet roll FTW

Would propel you to next level OzB status!

  • +5

There is a few things that don't make sense to me here.

If I'm supplying my own oil why does the service cost more if it's a mineral, semi or full synthetic?

Not many vehicles take under 4.5 ltrs anymore so how much is the upcharge if the vehicle takes more than 4.5 ltrs?

    • +2

      The BYO is $60.

For $105 they'll supply semi synth and a filter, for $125 fully synth and filter.

If your vehicle takes more than 4.5l give them a call to find out what the shortfall is.

      • Title could be worded way better tbh

        • +1

          Open to suggestions mate

          • +1

            @0jay: Use bullet points:
            - $60: BYO oil and filter
            - $105: semi-synthetic oil and filter supplied, up to 4.5L
            - $125: full-synthetic oil and filter supplied, up to 4.5L

            • @eciuj: Complaints seem to be directed at the title particularly

              • +1

@0jay: Its the use of brackets.

(Fees inc consumables: Semi $105, Fully $125)

The brackets imply that its related to the preceding item, the BYO deal.

But its a separate deal, so use "OR", not brackets.

OR non-BYO: Semi $105, Fully $125 (inc consumables)

                • @stumo: Can blame the mods for that.. thanks for the advice I'll give it a go

    • +2

I had to read the description several times before I understood what it meant.

  • hmm, anything for Qld ?

    • +7

You get all that sunshine what more do y want?!?

    • +1

Many small viet mechanics in richlands area would do it when I asked a few years ago.

Now I just do it myself

  • Why would you do an oil change only and not service the rest of the vehicle?

I understand supplying your own oil/filter to a mechanic as part of a regular service, but it seems these guys are just doing an oil change only ( the complimentary safety check won't cover much)

    • +1

What is it you're concerned about that you can't do yourself?

I keep an eye on all my other fluids, I have a Prius but if I feel a need to refresh brake fluid for ex I'll get that done especially.

It really depends how comfortable you are monitoring your vehicle's maintenance. I used to change fluids myself and kept an eye on everything. Now I just pay to get the stuff done that I have no interest in getting myself into a state about cos it's such a shtty job.

      Horses for courses

      • +2

I'm an ex-mechanic so am not concerned about anything.

However, if someone is not capable of changing their own oil, they are certainly not capable of checking brakes, suspension, bushes/mounts etc. (you know - the actual safety stuff).

I don't want people to think this is all they need to do to keep a car serviced/maintained.
The only scenario I can see this being relevant for is people that wish to do an additional oil/filter change in between the manufacturers service schedule (particularly Euro cars with very long intervals).

        • -1

if someone is not capable of changing their own oil, they are certainly not capable of checking brakes, suspension, bushes/mounts etc. (you know - the actual safety stuff).

I'm not sure what to say.

If someone pays for a service they are therefore incapable of performing whatever tasks that service encompasses?

          That's absurd.

          • @0jay: But this deal is not paying for a Service - it's just paying for an oil change.

As @SJDR pointed out, there's lots of other things to check as part of your annual Service. If someone doesn't know how to change their oil, they definately don't know how to do the other things !

            • +1

@Nom: Buddy, I know very well how to change oil and filter yet I'd default to paying someone to do it if I can supply my preferred consumables and pay no more than 30 minutes labour.

        • +1

The only scenario I can see this being relevant for is people that wish to do an additional oil/filter change in between the manufacturers service schedule

This is, or probably ought to be, quite common for anyone who does relatively low mileage (many possible reasons for that - two cars, holidays, public transport for workdays…. - and significantly extends the recommended service intervals.

    • -1

You can add air to your tyres free at any petrol station. There, full service done!

    • +1

There is a lot of people who get it dealer serviced yearly but just do an additional oil and filter change at 6 months. Or the car is a beater and they just do plugs, air filters etc every 2 or 3 years.

    • …not service the rest of the vehicle?

top up blinker fluid , done !

  • -2

Sixty bucks just to drain the old oil, unscrew the old oil filter and install a new one, and input the new oil seems a bit toppish? What are we talkng about - 15 minutes max?

    • +1

Shop around mate, see if y can top it.

If y prefer to do it yourself that's not a fair assessment on value for those who can't be arsed

    • +3

15 minutes max? Not sure how high you currently are to think it takes 15 minutes max, plus the fact that the engine has been warmed up, to

      1) load the car onto the lift safely

      2) lift the car up

      3) unscrew both the drain plug and the fuel filter which typically is hard to

      4) drain all the engine oil out

      5) screw the new filter and drain plug back on

      6) lower the car

      7) fill in the oil

      Keep dreaming mate

      • +1

Plus capital expenditure for facilities, workshop, tools (for other car related work), presumably trained as a mechanic, insurance, etc.

I reckon a mechanic could do an oil and filter change in about 15 (assuming everything goes smoothly), but only because of the equipment, experience and everything has been set up in a way to work efficiently.

But agree the time will be tight and rushed. Plus small things like skid/access plates might add a couple of minutes to the process

        • I don't doubt that the oil draining, filter changing and replacing as well as refilling the oil takes 15 minutes by itself. But as you said, the process to get there safely without affecting services rendered takes way longer.

Without the car lifts and the right tools, you would be lucky to get it all done in 1 hour yourself.

          • +2

@sh4hp: Yep, agree 100%. I imagine it wouldn’t be a good way to work and sometimes rushing can increase risk of accidents and injury.

At home, easily takes an hour and that’s me knowing my car (would take longer for a car that I was unfamiliar with). Setting up scissor jacks, axle stands, getting out the pan, etc., it all takes time… and then clean, pack up / return garage to its normal state. I’ve found some efficiencies, but it’s an annual thing so 5 minutes here and there is not a big deal in the scheme of things. Plus I can easily waste a bunch of time checking this and that, wiping a bit here and there in the engine bay. Lols.

…and then there’s a bit of pride in knowing its been done to my satisfaction.

            • @Worf: Agree, easily an hour when you include clean up, even more when you include used oil disposal. $60 BYO is a good deal, esp if you don't have the interest, or the skills/knowledge, or your filter is a pita to get at.

  • Bump if im feeling lazy and rich lolz

  • I take my car + oil + filter to a guy runs a one man shop in Seaford VIC.
labour, old oil disposal, service book stamped, no mess, no fuss.
    $80, at lease last time 6month ago…
just ask around your local garages.

    • $80 seems about $20 dearer than this deal

Local garages are obv relative to where you live. Where I'm at, the last guy I spoke to told me one of his competitors up the road has stopped servicing altogether and only does clutches now and is so busy he's thinking about selling out. This guy (the one who told me that) was telling me it's not worth the hoist time for him to charge folks for the 30 minutes if they bring their own oil.

Kmart Autos (now MyCar) used to do it but now against policy.

I've asked around my area. The guy in this deal's almost an hour from where I live and it's still better value for me to trek out to Reservoir.

Your mileage (as they say) may vary.

    • Can you please PM me his details. I'm in Bentleigh East and wouldn't mind a drive up to Seaford to get my car serviced every 6 months. Cheers.
