I have been watching this item on BHPhotovideo.com since I missed the above mentioned deal.

This is the cheapest I have seen this laptop.

This is the first time I have seen the 1080p version at a price range that falls below the $1000 customs duties and tax. Keep in mind customs calculates the value of the item on the date the good is dispatched so if the AUD falls dramatically you might get hit with the duties and taxes. I am willing to take the risk, but it is still an important consideration.

*Edit - mine dispatched within 1 day - minimising the exchange rate risk.

Keep in mind the $1000 excludes shipping costs. If your purchase is over $1000 then shipping and insurance will be included in the GST calculations.

For more information read:
http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp

If you are worried that this is too close to $1000 AUD you can still purchase the 1366x768 model which is crazy cheap at approx $873 delivered.

It is a very solid media laptop - The screen is gloss and not matte (if that is an issue for you).

As mentioned in the past post - I don't think there is international warranty- and you will need to buy a power converter.

The only place I have seen the 1080p model cheaper is on the Lenovo US website with their current sale which ends 26/09/2012 US time. The only problem is that Lenovo US will not ship to Australia.

Here is a review from Notebook check:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y580-20994BU-Lap…

They say the only problem is the slow HDD- you can install an msata or take the DvD bay out - personally I am going to install an Intel 330 180gb SSD3, one I bought of this deal:

keeps in mind you are liable for gst if over $1000 (delivery included)

    • +4

He did explain that in the OP…

      $1053 USD -> $997 AUD

      • +10

The cost of delivery is not counted in the $1000. I confirmed this with customs when I called their help line number (1300 363 263), I even sent them an email where they confirmed this.
So the cost of the item is: $967.04 AUD.

They also said, the exchange rate they take is the average of the RBA exchange rate for the day that it is dispatched not purchased - so there is a little bit of risk there with only a window of 2-3c of exchange rate volatility.

      • That is $1053 AUD - so $1,111.61 USD

      • Purchased! In before Rosh Hashanah, now to play the waiting game..

      • The exchange close on the weekend, you might wait still Monday for AUD vs USA to goes up again http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=AUD&to=USD&view=1W. Good find

        • It's actually the best it's been in a month.. half a cent don't worry me too much.

        • +1

just an update, I placed my order Sunday 10:30am and I woke up Monday to read an email that the item has already dispatched.

        • Me too! excited!

        • Have you checked the tracking on it yet? Very strange..

        • Got my laptop - it is a three prong - installed an ssd:

          Love it!

  • +1

    Dude you are psychic.. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79886

I'd been watching this but doubted it'd drop enough.
    Cheers!

    • Haha I signed up with shipito also to buy it at $999- but I figured I would not get the forms and id filled out in time.

It is at a price that I think is worth the risk - remember only the cost of the item is counts towards the $1000 value of the item. Shipping is not counted.

It will have an effect if your good is over $1000 - that is when it is included in:

GST is paid on the Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI).

The VoTI is the sum of:

      the Customs value (Cval)
transport and insurance cost (or postage and insurance) (T&I)
      any duty payable, plus
      WET (if applicable).

So with the item at $967.04 - I am happy to take the risk with a $40 buffer.

      • I'm weighing up whether to get my $8.50 refunded from them, haha! bastards didn't mention all that paperwork til i'd paypaled 'em.

        • Haha yeh, me too - they charge you a min $5 for a refund so you will only get $3.50 back.
I think i'll fill out the paper work and use their service later - maybe a mechanical keyboard from new egg

        • Hmm.. been thinking of a DSLR for sometime.. maybe that's what i'll look into..

        • What are you gonna do for a power adaptor?

        • +2

The power supply with most laptops works internationally. They're normally 100-240v. You should only require a 3 pin power cable like http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac….

        • Thanks I'll grab one of these, are you sure it will work?
          Are Lenovo plugs 3 pin?

        • My one is. The power brick is also 100-240V.
I've got a Y570 and the power brick's P/N is ADP-120LH B and it takes the 3 pin cable like the one linked above from what I can see.

        • Thanks, I'll wait for the laptop before I buy, but seems like the best solution!

        • Yes they are 3pin clover plugs as per the jbhifi link

  • +1

good spec for a gaming laptop
    good cpu and gpu
unlike other gaming laptop posts with low end low power graphic card

  • Not interested in Lenovo, but I think I've found my next laptop on B&H. Thanks :)

Cheers this is a great deal. I was gonna buy form lenovo and ship with Shipitto buy it was just too complicated. This is so much easier. Upgrading from my MacBook Air (back to windows for me).

Well, that was an informative and well written first post. Nice one, X853.. I hope that you stick around. :)

  • W/out Tax this deal is amazing!

With Tax, still pretty damn good.

  • Whats an Australian equivalent in terms of price?

  • You can purchase these headphones to go with the laptop

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/507447-REG/Sennheiser_…

    • +2

i hope you didnt buy it in the same order =S

  • Only thing it's missing is an IPS screen. For ~$100 more you could get one of the Asus ones with IPS tech.

    • From what I saw, this one had the best value - specs per dollar.
Could you link me the Asus model you are referring to, I would be interested to know.
All the Asus, MSI, Clevo ones I saw were much more expensive

  • not sure how good the air flow is in this.. Gaming laptops tend to overheat too much

    • You can see from the Notebook check link review. That heat was a bit of an issue - apparently elevating the laptop will make a big difference

      • You should always use a cooling pad on any laptop that has discrete graphics IMO

But yeah the specs that this laptop has are unbeatable for the price, great deal

      • Being a bit of an issue out of the box is a worry, because even laptops that run very cool new can, after a year or so, begin having overheating-throttling issues beyond that which can be fixed with a can of compressed air.

On the upside, Lenovo is one of the best when it comes to providing hardware maintenance manuals, which makes cleaning the fan assembly much less frustrating for those tech-savvy enough to do this procedure. They even had their technician training videos publicly available a few years back - not sure if this is still the case.

Looking at the maintenance manual for the Y580 suggests it's toward the pain-in-the-arse end of the spectrum when it comes to heatsink/fan maintenance.

    • Depends on how hard you push it.
I can play Starcraft II on Ultra settings (1920x1080) on my lap and highest the CPU hit was 80deg and CPU hit 70deg
The air coming out was obviously warm but I wasn't in danger of burning my crown jewels!
The reviews are often running 3Dmark or Furmark and Prime95 which is pushing it to the limits.

The cooling solution is actually very good for such a low priced gaming laptop.
The fan is bigger than the usual 40mm fan (I think its 60mm) and the heatsink is pure copper.

  • No warranty is the only thing deterring me from buying

    • I thought Lenovos come with 1 year International warranty?

  • +1

If only it was a premium thinkpad design…itd be so cool to have a heavy-gaming focused business laptop and being a thinkpad to boot

  • awesome machine, I would definitely get the 1080p with blu-ray burner if I had the money what a machine!

  • lol gaming laptop

  • I bought this the first time when i ozbargained it, and its a GREAT laptop.
    Honestly havent utilised its capabilities.

No power converter required, just the part that plugs into power socket and into the power pack, which you can poach off any old laptop.

    • Hi can I ask, is the connection the same as the JB link above?
Is it a three pronged connector?

  • +1

Enjoyed looking through the reviews on the BHPV website… "loads web pages quickly"

  • Hey guys, currently holidaying in NYC at the mo, just saw this and I'm thinking about picking this rig up. Not up to date with specs these days… Is the 1080p any good with high end gaming? Bf/cod etc?

    • +1

I think most people would agree the value of this machine is quite high. The specs per dollar is probably unmatched. Everything looks better in 1080p,

      • Thanks for the reply. Doing some camparos, the rig is def cheap as chips. Sorry, I meant is the 1080 (model) any good for the high end?

        • Sorry I misunderstood. This will be able do high specked gaming responsibly. Being able to run games like Guild Wars 2 was one of the main reasons I was looking for a laptop with a GTX660m. It tracked pretty well in most games - and does have sufficient improvement from the Gt 650m GDD5 to justify the price discrepancy. However seeing as you are in the US atm and don't have to deal with shipping costs or worry about the 1k tax limit, you should consider buying a Clevo - Sager. I almost bought a Sager NP6370 (Clevo W370ET) from Xoticpc.com (http://www.xoticpc.com/custom-gaming-laptops-notebooks-clevo…)but it was too close to the 1k AUD mark, and they wanted to charge $360 for shipping so - no thank you. If I were in the states with free delivery - I would pick a Sager over the y580 easy. Check out the notebook check review of the W370ET : http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-One-K73-2O-Clevo-W370ET-No…

Better heat distribution - and you can get a 1080p matte screen and also upgrade it to 95% gamut

For gaming performance check out how the GTX660m compares to other cards: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphi…

  • Think I'll pick one of these up to run my OS. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80135

  • Have the put the price up already? It wasn't $1,099.95 before was it?

    • Most of the time the price is $1099.95USD - sometimes it will come down to $1080.00USD.

I think it will be rare for the price to drop as much as it did for this deal, I think they were trying to remain competitive with the Lenovo US website which had a 7 day deal.

  • Anyone that bought one of these got there's yet? Looking at the tracking information it was cleared in Sydney last Thrusday.. it's telling me it's expected delivery is next Monday, what a joke that it takes longer to travel through Australia than halfway round the world.

    • Sorry postie, tracking was wrong, delivered today! Now just have to get a clover-style aussie plug adaptor thingo..

      • Alright, so have my plug sorted, now just waiting on the msata ssd to arrive.

Thinking I should fire her up, create an installation disk, format it, throw the ssd in when it gets here and reinstall the os on that.

Anything specific I should do that I may have overlooked? I believe I need to change the bios at some point?

  • Hi Carllevy just out of curiousity but when was your item dispatched? Mine was shipped on the 20/09/12 and has remained on this status: "Botany, Australia 09/23/2012 5:05 P.M. Destination Scan" for moreover the weekend.

Very strange whereby tracking slows to a crawl as soon as it reaches australia and I'm located in sydney so would think delivery is effecient.

Hopefully the delivery goes according to schedule for tomorrow "Wednesday, 09/26/2012, By End of Day".

    • Yeah, mine sat at botany for ages, then just showed up.. no australian delivery information at all. I'd expect yours today.

  • I've been using this laptop since last Friday. It's great, and runs all the latest games on high settings at native resolution. Postage was incredibly quick, not sure why it's taking so long for you guys. I ordered the Sunday before last at got it Friday afternoon.

    • I'm up in townsville.. guessing that's what took the extra day or so..

  • Received mine this morning and in accordance to delivery schedule. However wasn't impressed that they simple left the laptop on the porch and didn't attempt to hand deliver it since everyone was at home during the time.

Luckily i had check the "real-time" tracking and advised family accordingly.
