Imagine paying that much for a console on its last legs.

    • My kids were looking for one for xmas. I'm out of touch with game consoles, is there something better these days for them?

      • Not yet. But very much rumoured to be soon and going by the latest leaks, the new one will be much more powerful.

I’m guessing they’ll announce it next year to sell a bunch more of the old console to unsuspecting parents like yourself for Christmas.

People will say we’ve heard these rumours before and didn’t eventuate. But I believe the past rumours of a “Pro” model were accurate but Nintendo changed their mind due to how well the original sold during the lockdowns.

But now the console is ancient and the update is pretty much guaranteed in the next 12 months I’d say.

Up to you if you want to buy a console this late in its life.

Wouldn't be surprised if the next console is $799 or $899 which still makes this deal pretty decent value if you consider the game library that already exists. @iShibby should just get this and not wait. There is hours of fun available. The switch is an excellent console.

          • @lasterato: Should I be looking for a version that can be "hacked" or are those doors closed now?

            • +1

@iShibby: I'm not into that scene much, we have a lite, original switch and an OLED switch in the house (no kids, just adults haha), and they're all great for various reasons. If you are going to play handheld a lot, the OLED screen is gorgeous BUT the device can feel heavy. If you don't care for the joycons being detachable, the switch lite is a great little device that is a lot of fun. The original switch sits somewhere between the two. Depends what you want to do and how you expect to use it. If you have a couple of kids, then the detachable joycons would be the way to go. I'd just wait for a deal on the original switch and go with that.

@iShibby: In order to run custom firmware, you either need an old V1 switch secondhand, or, solder a modchip onto the motherboard of these newer switches. With the OLED model I believe it is quite difficult. Basically it's not like the good old days of the nintendo DS, but still possible.

              • @povogamer: username checks out :) Thanks for the tips, games are so expensive these days :(

          • @lasterato:

@iShibby should just get this and not wait.

Up to them. I’d personally wait. Might be discounts on the old Switch or the new Switch might not that be that expensive considering it’s still probably just going to the same as the current just with a more modern Nvidia SoC.

              @PainToad: opportunity cost right?

Wait without a device for literally months, that may or may not be compatible with the current system (likely incompatible) to spend more money on something that's "better" when the current "best" is right here with many many hours of fun to be had.

        • The rumours are perpetuated by XBOX and PS sponsored gaming sites to encourage people to not buy the current switch and instead buy something different. It’s been going on for half the life of the system and it’s insane people keep buying into it.

    • “Imagine paying that much for the best current console with the best game library.”

      👌🏼

Was considering the PS5 deal, maybe Switch is more suitable for family fun.

$449 is actually not bad, $420 if you can be bothered with GC or JB tricks, buy now play now.

Switch 2 in theory could arrive in 2024, but factoring in pre-order hypes and early adopter premiums, will be lucky to get one in H2 of 2024.

  • 1 would be enough for 2 kids? or how do they share it? Also, does this has multi-screen/split screen games, which 2 players can play?
