  • Is this a good bike,
Been thinking recently of getting my motorcycle licence

    • +2

Depends what you're looking for and I doubt it's learner approve

        Thanks,

I actually read it as Save $35,000

All bikes are learner approved if you cap them

    • Perfect first bike. Stay upright my friend.

Coming from a rider with 20+ years of experience, don't spend more than $5-6k on a learner motorcycle.

Unless money is of no concern to you, then by all means.

Budget $1k-$1.5k for quality protective gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, boots with ankle protection).
After you obtain your P's and full licence, then start indulging in your passion.

      • Thanks for the information,
I was unsure what my budget should be for a good cheap used bike that's not too old or worn out or even if there a is a specific brand i should be looking at.

I got my learners a year ago and got this.
Been a very good learners bike for <6k about 3 years old (quite new)

I liked the naked frame look. But each to their own.

My personal preference is for Japanese. Get something that is comfortable. Sports bikes might look and sound cool, but the downside is they can be fairly uncomfortable and really are made for handling high speeds and turns (as opposed to, say, commuting or touring).

I was planning on buying something like a Ninja as my first bike, but my housemate at the time conviced me to buy a Yamaha V-star cruiser. Turned out to be a great bike (although perhaps a tad heavy for what I would recommend as a first bike for someone else).

            @thisisscotts:

buying something like a Ninja as my first bike,

Good choice. I had the ninja 250. Was under powered and not that comfy for long journey. On the plus side it was light and easy to throw around in small spaces. Anyway. Got rid of it as soon as I went onto unrestricted licence.

          Thanks for the suggestions.

Melbourne traffic is making me wonder why I drive a car everyday to work.

        • Honda CBR250RA with ABS - reliable and has ABS, decent resale value - could probably pick one up for ~$3/4k?

    • This bike is definitely not for a Learner… If you get your L's then it's a 650cc for you & a lot of people go for the Yamaha XVS650 which is a cruiser style bike … Plenty to see on Bikesales with modifications done to them…

When on a full licence you can ride something like this with 1800cc of power…

I personally have a Suzuki Boulevard M109R which is also 1800cc & the power is incredible but it's bigger & heavier than the BMW but the down side alas is that they've stopped importing them into Australia due to Suzuki not putting ABS on the Boulevards now :-(

F650 GS is also versatile first bike with a more upright riding position. Extremely economical.

keep in mind that for bigger engine bikes you pay more when it comes to insurance

I started on Honda CB400 ABS and kept it on my fulls, perfect commuter and it has a system of valves which is variable: activates another two when you revv it more than 6k, result: quiet commuter below 6k rpm, if you need to disappear from danger or traffic light then revv it more than 6

    Yikes, who designed that exhaust..?

    • That is a BUTT UGLY exhaust

    • Engineers, probably to meet some sound/emissions standards. But I agree, that is unbelievably ugly.

      • "Those big, dumb pipes I mentioned make lovely music."

        https://gizmodo.com.au/2021/06/the-bmw-r-18-is-too-big-but-t…

        • Would be pretty hard pressed to put any functional set of pipes on that thing and not sound fantastic. That’s a beefy engine.

          • @Yekul: this looked like BMW tried to make the most american cruiser evar

damn its even got monkey bars

            • @tonyjzx: yep, even has the hard tail styled frame
              .

    • header pipe bigger than brake calipers, I'd prefer it the other way around
      .

  • Thanks OP! Just bought thanks to The Bikeriders trailer

  • “3 x Riding Modes (Rock, Roll, Rain)”

    That is so cringey lmao
