That makes it effectively $27.33/month for a 150GB/month plan which is pretty decent. You do need to go to an Apple Store to sign-up for this though.

If you're not sure about Vodafone's network, you can get a cheap $2 SIM to test it out. I found their signal level & speeds similar to current Optus in Sydney CBD.

    • +2

not sure why you got negged, it's not a bad deal for those happy with vodafone network

      • Any similar offers for Telstra deals?
I need high data allowance, as it will be my only internet access, and my new location only/barely gets Telstra.

        Thanks team

          • @skittlebrau: Arent these byo phone plans though?

            • +2

@WreckTangle: Sort of. You need to be a new Telstra customer by getting a new number or porting in your existing number. You sign up for the $99 plan and then you get a $1200 voucher which you can use to buy a phone. You’d need to do the sums and weigh up whether this works for you.

        • One thing I would say is that respect to Voda since Melbourne's Domain tunnel is no issues and Telstra ALWAYS disconnects when switching to 3G (but nothing works type of 3G) iPhone and Samsung tested. Coming out of tunnel takes half way to the west gate if you wait for an auto reconnect. Airplane mode on and off works faster

          • @plague69: I think Voda's reputation is worse than reality,
I was with Telstra for 10 years, changed to Vodafone last year to save a bit on my mobile and on a recent trip to visit my sister, I had data the whole way, (she lives in regional Queensland) where Telstra would cut out about 10km out of the nearest town.
I was very happy with Vodafone's network over the whole 1400km trip.

            • @Ma77mc: Really need to state how regional. Where I live (in the Western Downs region) there is only Telstra, and this applies to a surprisingly large portion of regional Australia

              • +2

@hjcoggan: About 45 minutes out of Bundaberg.

With Telstra, I would drop data service about 20 minutes north of Gympie, it would cut back in around Maryborough but wouldn't last all that long and then nothing until Childers and would go not long out of Childers,

2 weeks ago, Vodafone streaming Youtube almost the whole way, I lost data for about 10 minutes around Tiaro but that was it, worked really well. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max and had a 12 Pro Max on Telstra.

    • +13

You gotta factor in the phone which is $800 at the lowest point for the 15 pro after the $1000 discount. 800/24 is $34 AUD per month effectively although paid up front. And another $69 per month for the plan.

$1656 for the plan over 24 months
$800 Minimum for the phone which is $34 pm over 24 months effectively
Effective cost pm is $103 over 24 months - Real cost is $69 per month with min $800 down

Its not the worst deal but there might be one or two during BF. It is good because you can swap out the phone without it being locked to an ISP which also means that this phone is GSM unlocked in comparison to a potential IMEI lock.

      • +2

Phone price is the same as retail outright purchase price for direct comparison. Long gone are the days of subsidised flagship phone costs on mobile contracts.

So essentially you're comparing their 150GB plan at either effectively $27.33 here (with the $1,000 off) vs $55 if SIM-only.

        https://www.vodafone.com.au/mobile/sim-only-phone-plans

        • -1

Soooo, get the $1000 off - sell the iPhone 15 for $900-$1000 profit. That goes back onto the 24mth plan to become $27.33?

          • @AircraftFreight: I suppose you could if you wanted, but this is more for anyone already buying an iPhone 15 outright and open to a contract deal as well.

If you don't need either, then there's no real value for you here.

Currently paying Optus $40/month for 40GB data and definitely getting an iPhone 15 either way already, so this works well for my particular case.

            • +5

@Hybroid: Boost $300 annual plan does me just fine

              • +1

                @Commodore64: Are you comparing 260gb a year with 150gb a month ?

                • +7

                  @dcep: Not per se.
It’s just many of us don’t need that much data and so a $60 or so BYO plan doesn’t yield as much value.
                  There are cheaper options

                  • +5

@Commodore64: I switched from a Vodafone $50 to a 6 month Amaysim 150gig for $75, I have 75 days left and have used 25gig, had no idea that between home and work wifi I used next to nothing, will never pay $50 a month again . And the Optus 4G+ runs 140mb speed where I live and Vodafone 5G ran at about 200, completely irrelevant at those speeds

                    • +1

@Capitalshark: Realised I’m actually on the $200 plan.

71.8/130gb remaining and expires at the end of the year.

Something like $18 a month and 5G speeds too.

                      • +2

@Commodore64: I paid $150 for 12 months of Boost, which I find sufficient datawise. After applying Vodafone’s $1000 rebate, it is $356 more expensive over 24 months. The unused data has no value.

                • +1

@dcep: are you telling just pay for what telco asks you without questioning whether you really need that much data or not?

            • @Hybroid: $45/month for 120GB 5g through Mate

      • Iphones haven't been imei locked for years… even when they were you call the ISP and tell them you're going overseas and they unlock for free

      • +1

without it being locked to an ISP

        MNO

      • Soooo… you reckon upcoming BF you could get cheaper iPhone 15 + 150gb p/m sim plan for cheaper than this ?

I don't like your chances of massively discounted new iPhone that's just released , or $150gb p/m byod sim plan for under $27.

      • Probably the 20x points Apple gift cards with $300 Boost plan would work cheaper over 24 months.

    • ‘pretty decent’ I mean it’s a great deal

  • Can we add a device repayment plan to this BYOD plan?

    • Isn't that the point?

      • No and no. If you sign up to their lock in sim, they will give you $1000 off the iPhone 15 on an outright purchase.

        • +1

My assumption was Vodafone would allow you to pay off the phone in instalments like the other telcos

          • @teacherer: They do offer that on their standard plans (so what you can sign up direct on the VF website) but these plans are not really the same as their standard retail plans e.g. you cant share data if you have the BYOD plan (which this offer relies on) and another 'standard' plan as available on their website.

Vodafone retail (so the plans on their website) currently dont appear to have any trade in bonuses but its only 5 mins to go till they open trade in so they may end up beating this one anyway.

    • No you can’t in the Vodafone system it’s a SIMO service as you buy the device from apple. If you were to try add another device we have to change the plan, You would be able to add on a watch/accessories though.

      • Is change plan free?

        • A EEF or payout is online with the CIS.

      • How much is a watch plan add on? My wife is with Optus and has never been able to get her 4G Apple Watch to send/receive SMS with their service. Tried to fix it for months with no result.

        • +1

          $5/month

      • Does this deal apply to the pro max?

For existing customers - do they just change the esim allocation once you get the phone?

How would you put an international sim card in the phone if you're travelling?

  • +17

Not a bad plan but a 24 months contract is so 2000s

    • It's no longer an old school thing but a the new norm in 2023

It's like the telco all agreed to not run promotion on 12m plans anymore…

      • More people tend to break contracts at 24 than 12.

    • +2

Better than them doing 36 months

    • +1

there service sucks, they are trying to keep customers. most dont bother switching out. telstra is the way to go. optus maybe, but hell no to vodafone

      3nm vs 14nm????

      • -4

Which one does your gf prefer?

      • I am using both the iPhone 13 Pro and the HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro. The only advantage of the iPhone for me is that it can use Uber easily, whereas using Uber on Huawei is either not possible or very complicated (thanks to Google's prohibition). I don't think the SoC makes much of a difference these days.

      • -1

RU OK? 3nm is useless marketing gimmick like fake Retina tricks. If Huawei Mate 60 Pro (7nm, same as Intel) was available in Australia (only China initially) then it would be better value.
I have Galaxy S23 Ultra (I'm IT pro & use most of the functionality with unmatched features like productivity beast S-pen, 200MP 10x opt zoom, 8k/30fps, multi-window, DEX, fast 45w charge & fast USB-C 3.2 data …
all with ~ $1000 discount on preorder & can use with existing value $39 plan with no 24m contract.

        • +6

          I'm IT pro

          Doubt.

        • +1

Although I went from an iPhone 14 Pro to the S23. I disagree that for a 'pro' user this phone is better. I have to say if you really need to emulate Switch games or customise accessibility actions/shortcuts and theming then yes S23 all the way. If you're to use it for work calls, taking photography, videos then the iPhone, and if you're a pro you'd most likely already have a laptop or PC to do productive tasks.

Android and OneUI always ends up a lot less optimised over time, unlocking a phone and opening an app or taking a photo takes longer. At least the S23 can be purchased way less than an iPhone 14 Pro now but I miss that there was no lag like that on the iPhone.

And we won't know about 3nm efficiency until phone is released and review embargoes released

If you're not a 'pro' and just need a phone that does the job then I'm not sure you'd need to look at S23 or iPhone 14 Pro. Mid range phones do everything fast enough already

      I wish more did this!

      • Honestly my favourite feature in a phone, and sadly a dying one.

        • I love it so much :(

Almost no premium phones do it, unless I buy Chinese, which comes with other issues.

    • The Mate 60 pro sells out everyday in seconds..

  • You essentially break even if you currently pay $30 per month on a byo plan.

The difference of a $30 byo plan and the $69 Vodafone plan is $936 over 24 months.
So you may get a boatload of data and a saving of $64, but you're on Vodafone's network.

Good for those where carrier doesn't matter

    • I did this 2 years ago for the iPhone 13, where my work pays for the plan up to $60/m. Having 100gb per month was useful in work circumstances where I had no Wi-Fi and needed to hotspot off my phone, but the reception / 5g speeds would sometimes be quite awful with vodafone.

Can u pls tell me how much the GST amount is on the tax invoice apple thru this plan?
i.e GST of the iphone full price
Or GST of the (iphone price - $1000)

    Thx

    • I like the way you think. Salary packaging?

      • TRS

        • I am also interested to know. For tax and TRS as well. Jbhifi Telstra gives gift card so invoice value is full price not sure how this works.

        • Same here. Going overseas soon and interested getting a new iPhone 15 Pro.

    • +3

Last time I took advantage of a promo at the Apple Store, the GST was on the discounted price, not the full price.

    • Did this last year, it’s GST of the (iphone price - $1000). In my case it was a 128GB 14PM, which is $899 after the deal. And it has a GST of 81.73.

  • +6

don't do it. vodafone service sucks. telstra is the best and leaps and bounds over optus. vodafone service is slower then all 3 and also less coverage. if you are getting an iPhone 15, you need 5g speed which vodafone doesn't have. they label it as 5G, but when i test the speed for when i had it, it was slow like 3G maybe 4G. the area i was in i was getting over 1GB, optus was about 300-400mb, vodafone wasn't even breaking 100mb. that was from the same spot.

i would pay extra for telstra that has a lot of coverage to give me max speed and fastest speed.

optus would be 2nd best, but i wouldn't get there service. vodafone is the absolute worse service, slow speed, no coverage, and horrible customer service. i don't think they are from oz.

    • +4

Optus has faster 5G speed but Telstra has a wider reach. It has something to do with what band they use. I didn’t make that up either, it’s a known fact. Someone may be able to elaborate on that.

      • On the east coast I've noticed Optus is faster but in Perth and Adelaide I believe Telstra is faster

      • -1

maybe if you're directly under a tower, but you won't be. so you need the wider reach to create usable speed.
        j
ust my personal real world experience from all 3 carriers. no matter where i go, i get fast service indoors and out with telstra. optus i only get good service outdoors but no where near as fast as telstra. vodafone is just absolute garbage. no wonder they have to give these deals, because no one wants to sign with them.

      • You sure about that? I think telstra is both faster and wider. Never gotten anywhere near Gigabit speeds on Optus 5G, but get at least 750mbps most of the time on Telstra 5G

        • Strangely, I just found a link which contradicts what I have been told by a telco engineer: https://www.opensignal.com/reports/2023/04/australia/mobile-….
          I have NFI.

          • @[Deactivated]: 'Average 5G download speeds'. I'd hazard a guess that the sample results of the Telstra 5G speeds include all the service on other bands but your phone still classifying it as 5G on the speedtest app. The majority of urban areas you will find you are on '5G' with Telstra. 5G standalone will stop that.

        • I’ve been getting between 780mbps to 1180mbps with Optus 5G in my area. Agreed with indoor being slower but my Telstra 5G only giving me 500Mbps outdoor.

          Optus is faster in Sydney.

          • @goraygo: Over 200mbps is not an indication of connection quality. Jitter and variance along with packet loss and roundtrip time is key.

Also this is for your location, unless you're an Otaku, then network capacity is also key.

Limits on monthly usage is to flatten out the peaks to alleviate network congestion. With such generous data, you'll have more congestion during peak times. Maybe not your tower, but when you hit the city or even a hub like a shopping centre, your connection may degrade

            • @plague69: I am in a city with 2 shopping centres and I measured the speed during weekend lunch hours outside the shopping centres on the footpath were even more shops on the streets and it was busy. I don’t live in the bush and they would allocate that kind of bandwidth.

And yes, I looked at the jitters as well. Optus jitter was 3.5ms, not bad at all for over 1Gbps.

    • +1

You are talking rubbish. Vodafone 5G network in areas they do service is great and really fast.

Sure, they don’t have the reach of coverage in rural areas like Telstra and Optus do, but if you rarely go to rural areas, their network is great.

      • false, im in sydney. i only go ruralish when i go camping and telstra always works. they all work if you make phone calls and text, but when playing games, videos, and surfing, telstra is the way to go. vodafone is trash.

        • +1

I commute from Blue Mountains to Sydney CBD most days. Vodafone 5G is great (except for Stanmore / Petersham where all carriers have issues).

I stream YouTube, Google Meet, work on the train the whole time.

Sure camping and rural areas Telstra is better.

Vodafone’s metro 5G network is great in western Sydney and Blue Mountains at least in my experience.

I got this same deal for iPhone 14 Pro last year and the 5G network has improved significantly since I first signed up.

You can’t get a deal anywhere near this on Telstra.

          • @bargaineer: u can't because telstra doesn't need to convince you to join there network. next time do a simple speed test with someone that has optus or telstra. you will see a clear difference guaranteed.

            its like coffee:

            Vodafone:
if you enjoy instant coffee that is super cheap stick with it.

            Telstra:
but once you get your own dual boiler espresso machine, purchase freshly roasted beans mailed to you, and grind them seconds before you brew it, you can't go back to instant coffee.

if you are happy with vodafone, definitely stay there. but once you experience something better (telstra), its hard to go back (vodafone or optus)

            • +1

@Hugh G Rection: I switched to Voda in 2018 because they ran a crazy good deal on an amazing phone I wanted and honestly most of the time it was quite good.

Voda and Optus have both had periods in their history (at least in Melbourne) of sometimes being THE WORST EVER and other times really pretty decent.

            • +1

@Hugh G Rection: I’ve been with Telstra before I signed up last year. Can get gigabit speeds at my local cafe on Telstra 5G, sure it’s very fast.

Vodafone gets 300-400 megabits per second at my local cafe and it’s super reliable and stable.

It’s a similar experience elsewhere in Sydney. I don’t get the super fast Telstra speeds but consistently throughout Sydney I can get between 100-200 Mbps (fast is probably 400-500 Mbps) which will allow you do anything you need to do while out and about.

I don’t dispute Telstra is better, but for what you pay, in metro areas Vodafone is great.

Seems like you might not have used Vodafone for a while, because like I mentioned over the past year, Vodafone have improved a lot, including activating their 5G Standalone network.

            • @Hugh G Rection:

if you are happy with vodafone, definitely stay there. but once you experience something better (telstra), its hard to go back

Have to completely disagree with your analogy. I’ve been with all 3 within the last 12 months as I’ve been sim slutting.

I’ve noticed no difference between them because I never go to regional. Espresso for some all the time.

    • unfortunately have to agree with that one yep

I thought they have improved somewhat, after using them around 8-9 years ago

but nope - absolutely shocking as soon as you get out of densely populated areas

  • Since this is through Apple, can it get charged to Apple balance?

    • I would see why not

    • +4

Apple Account balance only applies to online purchases not in store purchases

      • Can bring in gift cards though

    • +1

you could buy something online with your balance and return in store to a gift card and use that for the purchase.
