[iPadOS] HDMI Monitor - Orion, Free @ Apple App Store

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Official Description:

TVs and Computer Monitors are large, cumbersome devices. Wouldn’t it be a treat if you could use the portable screen you already have with you as an HDMI monitor for cameras, game consoles, computers or other devices?

Say “Hello” to the Orion Video System, a software application from Lux Entertainment and Optics Inc. With a simple USB-C Capture Card, or “dongle” and the free Orion Video System application, getting a big screen is never a big hassle*.

*Requires iOS 17, an iPad with USB-C, and a USB-C Video Capture Card.

Unlike certain previous 'deal' this is actually free, and from a reputable developer.

Regarding the in-app purchase:

Orion is free to download, and Lux advertises it has no ads or tracking. But if you’d like, you can upgrade to Orion Pro for $4.99 and gain some extra features. The premium unlocks “AI-Powered” 4K upscaling for video inputs, a CRT filter for old-school gaming and VHS playback vibes, and picture adjustment capability. So now you can hook up a Nintendo Switch to your iPad screen and warp that Metroid Prime Remastered game back to how it looked on your parents’ basement TV in 2002.

  • What's this for?

    In-App Purchases
    Orion One Time Purchase $7.99

Edit: nvm post was edited with additional info

  • Can it be used to get FTA tv (with other hardware) so my wife can watch footy in the kitchen?

    • Yes, but that would be a somewhat bananas solution to the issue, and untidy.

If you can be bothered, setting up a home server to rebroadcast FTA TV over IP would have the highest WAF.

      • Has anyone figured out how to do that with ios?

I tried so many programs to play matt huismans iptv list, but they all seem to just be reskins of vlc or something (and vlc is banned i guess) so they all fail.

      • I do have a hdhomerun network tuner if it helps. Never used it because I don't have an aerial near the router

        • You don't need an aerial near the router - you just need to get the HDHomeRun onto your network from wherever you aerial socket is. Use a wireless bridge, or powerline networking, or a long cable.

    • Not sure I understand - why wouldn't you just use the FTA app (10play, 9Now, 7plus etc) on the tablet?

      • Is that still working? I thought they canned that

        • All the FTA stations have free mobile apps for live and catchup TV. ABC iView, SBS On Demand, 10play, 9now, 7plus.

          • @ayoole: No I know that, but there used to be a freeview app that brought them all together until it was killed a few years ago. It's kind of annoying to have to close one app and open another just to see what else is on, as well as make seperate accounts for each of them.

            • @outlander: Each to their own, but you only need to sign up and log in once, the apps remember you after one login. It's really not hard at all.

          • @ayoole: But not for things like AFL games.

      • When did they add live tv?

        • In the past few years. The worst thing about streaming live FTA TV is that they insert different ads in to the ad breaks, and you tend to see a lot of repeated ad spots compared to the terrestrial broadcast. So when you see the same ad in every ad break for an hour or two it can get pretty tiresome.

  • How can I add this to my account without having an ipad? I'm going to have one and I'd love to "save" this one and other apps.

App Store on my macbook or iphone won't allow me to add this app to my account as it requires an ipad.

    • +1

You can't. App Store really needs a wishlist. I just keep a list of links of apps in Notes

  • I wonder if this will work with the new iPhone 15 pro, since it does have a 10gbps USB3 controller.

  • Tries to connect my laptop to it and this doesn't seem to work with "usb-c docks" nor usbc-hdmi cable
I just bought a video capture card from amazon and will check if it works once they arrive

    • USB-C dock/cable is only ever going to be video-out.

  • Too bad this only works with ipad with usb-c and not with lightning port…ah well…at least it's free
