Agree! It's got that cute ugly look about it. But to be honest, ute's are never the best looking cars anyway, regardless of brand.

        Hybrid
        Disabled access

        Special limited edition and performance

          • @CurlCurl: That is an odd reply - a google search.

Yes, there are importers, they are subject to the new laws, you will find many have gone/are going out of business and the remaining ones are more specialty, aimed at the limited/performance end of the market, Skylines, Fairladys, RX-7, Evo's and that sort of thing. As well as Half-cuts and other ways of importing for the performance/limited market.

300 series ? Hot v6 and oil drinking problem no thanks (owner of older landcruiser)

        • -5

You have no idea what youā€™re talking about. I own a 300 and havenā€™t drunk a drop. And that hot V6 is a good engine, the main market for the 300 is in the Middle East, and has been in development for years. The new V6 can be seen as the old V8 with two cylinders lopped off one end of the cast-iron block, and then topped with all-new (but still DOHC four-valve) cylinder heads, and more sophisticated fuel-delivery and turbo systems but more powerful and more fuel-efficient.

The fact remains the 4.5-liter V8 and the 3.3-liter V6 both have 86mm cylinder-bore and 96mm piston-stroke dimensions, both have a cast-iron block, and both have their cylinder banks set 90 degrees apart. The 300 series is highly reliable.

Just because you had some ā€œolderā€ Land Cruiser with issues doesnā€™t speak for every land cruiser in existence nor does it speak to what is a known commodity in reliability the world over. Stop thinking youā€™re smarter than everyone else from ill-informed opinion pieces from watching John Cadogan on YouTube that claim Hyundai is a superior brand to all.

I really love hearing opinions made out to be fact-based on non-ownership.

Depreciation? Toyota is the best for resale. Thatā€™s it. Their servicing sucks, full of inexperienced mechanics and is completely overwhelmed with its capacity of fleet vehicles. They just donā€™t care and Iā€™m sick of hearing how tough and reliable they are.
Toyota 4x4s were the best once and now theyā€™re a gamble you need to sell before the expensive repairs appear for them trying to add technology into solid trucks.

Iā€™ll take a new Toyota for work but Iā€™d never buy one for personal use. Just collectable Toyotas worth spending money on for me

      • Pretty sure if you can get your hands on any variation of Landcruiser they go up in value

    • Love the 79 series such a classic

GWM Cannon is getting quite popular and great value

    • +1

I mean it's cheap. I'm not entirely sure if it's great value. The first time around great wall was garbage value. This time around they're definitely better looking, still a bit of a rough finish.

But yeah cheap parts and cheap labour will generally make for a cheap car.

      • +1

Not a fan of GWM either, but overtime perception can change, esp with the advent of EV.

    • How many do you need?

      • Enough so it's not a 2hr drive to get to one

  • +6

I was also thinking of getting the GWM , Cannon as well great value,,,,,

    • -4

GWM have a history of troublesome maintenance, you may find yourself in the shop a lot

      • All brands start somewhere and at least they have a 7 year warranty.
Every car has their problems though.

        Toyota's - DPF's
        Ford Rangers/Everests - Gearboxes
BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jeep - Everything.

      • It's not so much the quality, it's the stock of spares that the dealers have access to. Often it's the wait for the importation of spares that is the time waster.

  • +8

Wouldnā€™t touch any of these Mahindra, GWM or LDVā€™s with a 10 foot pole. Theyā€™re cheap for a reason.

    • +26

Bet you said the same thing about Korean cars….

      • +5

Korean cars were shit in the early days, but they have improved a lot. Only time will tell about these Chinese cars, but why would you want to be the guinea pig? A second hand triton would be far better option and offer much better resale value.

        • +5

What would you say about Indian cars then, because this deal is about one

          • -1

            @dbmitch: Sorry. I meant both :)

            • @mirovich: fair, if one can get a newish second-hand hilux with less than 100km on the dash at the price of this Mahindra, then we know where the winner is

              • @dbmitch: Why would you buy a hilux? Itā€™s a great car but comes at a very premium price. This is why I mentioned Triton.

    • +5

You can get a Korean vehicle with a Peugeot diesel engine in this price range too.

      https://ssangyong.com.au/models/musso

Perhaps the Chinese/Indian brands aren't too cheap, the familiar brands are overcharging us. They all use similar parts, labour costs do not explain it with the amount of robotics in manufacturing, and besides the other brands outsource to low wage countries too.

      • +9

        Builder here.
Bought myself a Musso this year after test driving everything.
I simply cannot justify a 80k+ ute for something that is behind in tech in comparison to the car/suv market.
Dual cab utes are the biggest rort going around in my opinion.

I have no prejudice against Chinese vehicles, I own 2 LDV vans and they are perfect for the 3 years they will serve me. I'll buy another 2 again.

However, the Canon and T60 are not even in the same realm in regards to build quality vs the Ssangyong. Test drive all 3 and you will see what I mean.

As an OzBargainer, I honestly think the Musso is the only current "bang for buck" bargain in the dual cab ute market.

Chinese utes will eventually take over the market and be good quality, I have no doubt about that but currently, they are built to a price and you can tell.

Of of my employees who personally owns a 2022 Hilux SR5 sat in the LDV G10+ when we went to test drive it and his own words were "I'm embarrassed to say this but this interior is better than my Hilux".

        • I simply cannot justify a 80k+ ute for something that is behind in tech in comparison to the car/suv market.

Odd statement to make given any ICE engine is "behind in tech" when hybrids & EV's are moving it forward. Looking forward to the Hilux Hybrid next year!

          • @Cyphar: While I wholeheartedly agree that the commercial vehicle sector is need of more hybrids and EVs, my comment was in relation to creature comfort tech and features.

After all, we do of course sit inside the vehicle.

Commercial vehicles need to be robust and practical and unfortunately the ā€œtechā€ is not there yet.

Toyotas (Hino) EV tipper gets a range of 200-250km which is a major compromise. I havenā€™t seen any on the road nor have I even seen their hybrid option. Id be interested to see the sales figures.

    • +7

      Lol
As opposed to forking out $60k on a ranger only to have its gearbox sh1t itself like they all do?

Ldv and gwm both have 7 year warranties and interiors that make 2023 hiluxes and rangers look dated.

      Honestly they're terrific value.

      • SsangYong and Mitsubishi both have 10 year warranties now. Ssang Yong has been bought out by a Korean billionaire.

        • +4

"10 year warranties" read the small print. (there's some important exclusions lurking in the handbook)

          • -5

@Protractor: If you're making this claim, presumably you've read said small print.
So what are the important exclusions in your view?

            • +2

@Sleeqb7: Pretty sure the latest Tritons still have the escape clause whereby certain components are thrown in the wear & tear, not covered basket. That's fair enough, but it gets grubby when they list injectors. It's not clear whether if a failure that caused downstream issues and killed the engine whether that downstream event is fully covered. I asked at point of sale (because I read a few articles about it) and the salesperson had no idea it existed until pointed out, and could not give an answer.
Although it might be a rare possibility, you'd think Mits would have a view on it given they are aware of the clause.
I'm not sure if the issue of "it must be serviced at Mits dealers to be covered" is also still a current prerequisite ,either. I moved on.(I doubt situation has changed)
              Don't believe it? google it.

Here's one (older) article about the 10 yrs>
              https://www.whichcar.com.au/car-news/mitsubishi-australia-10ā€¦

Here's a saved slab of a Product Review Post (not mine) I saved when doing research >
              "3 out of 5, reviewed on Jul 14, 2018
Be warned Mitsubishi has a ā€˜Limited Life Warrantyā€™ and lists a bunch of parts that Mitsubishi only warrants for 12 months or 20,000kms. Mitsubishi suggests that these components are ā€œsubject to normal wear and tear and that the use of your vehicle can influence the life of these componentsā€. Fair call, but that summary could fairly be applied to every part that makes up a vehicle. There are some items listed you canā€™t argue with, as wear and tear and potentially owner abuse can kill some consumables ā€“ brake pads, clutches and wiper rubbers come to mind for example ā€“ and no self respecting new vehicle owner would expect such items to be covered.

But the following items being classified as having a ā€˜limited lifeā€™ and being dumped from the known five-year warranty and plonked into an unknown 12 month warranty, tucked away in the service book or on the Mitsubishi website.

              Glow plugs
              Fuel injectors
Cooling and fuel lines or hoses
              Rubber or plastic components

The main concerns are the glow plugs and fuel injectors. What owner wouldnā€™t reasonably expect to get five years or 100,000 kms from both of those items and accordingly have the vehicleā€™s full warranty cover them should they fail prematurely?

The same can be said of cooling and fuel line hoses. They canā€™t really be worn out prematurely by the owner, so why only a 12 month warranty?

The rubber and plastic components inclusion is amusing given the entire vehicle is made up of thousands of rubber and plastic parts, including many plastic items used in the engine and cooling system.

What happens if an injector fails outside of its Limited Life Warranty period and melts a piston? Is the engine still covered by the five year warranty?

Mitsubishiā€™s website under warranty describes it's "limited life warranty" but most describe a 'limited life-time warranty. Mitsubishi just deducted the time part. But a Google search doesn't even know the term. So they just made it up. Anyway you go to a dealer and they give you a brochure that says nothing about limited life warranty. And the dealer doesn't hand out any material about it either before they get you to sign a contract. Then you look at page 9 of the warranty booklet and there it is. After the fact. Not fair trading! False and misleading! Better to ask your dealer what is not covered under your 5 year warranty before you buy it."
              END QUOTE

Like I said Mits may have altered all this, but I doubt it

              • +4

@Protractor: Damn dude! You got asked for receipts and you brought the receipts. Your move @Sleeqb7

I have no horse in this race, I just felt making a claim like that and not not backing it up was dumb, so they backed it up. Good.

              • @Protractor: Do diesel cars still have glow plugs?

              • @Protractor: Yeah I wouldn't believe that 10 year warranty that much. You are paying extra for warranty upfront. Save it and buy something else. If you are using it for work, just get rid of in 5 years, write it off and get another new one.

          • +2

            @Protractor:

"10 year warranties" read the small print. (there's some important exclusions lurking in the handbook)

Must be serviced by a dealer and 10 year warranty not transferable.

          • @Protractor: I did some deep reconnaissance within Australian Musso groups prior to purchasing mine and the general consensus was that SsangYong have one of the best warranties.

I agree, there are some critical exclusions lurking within Mitsubishi warranty.
