Dad Just Bought a New Car and Wants to Put Thousands of Star Wars Stickers on It

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/275967624275?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk… like the above as I can't find them on eBay, but it's similar to the link and it's coming from TW in about 2 weeks, he has already ordered them.

My dad just bought a warm-hatch (MG4 Essence) delivery is happening in 1 month.

As a big star wars fan he is aiming to put a out 1000 star wars stickers on the 2 front doors and 2 passenger doors as well as a giant Darth Vader sticker on the car bonnet.

I normally would talk him out of it, however seeing how excited he is about the possible final new car he will ever get, I didn't want to spoil his passion.

The stickers are none reflective and none offensive, question is how legal is it if a car is virtually covered with that many stickers? Insurance issues? Cop would stop him? Etc ………

    • Hey HEY don’t you be bashing the family stickers

  • Sticker Bombing…
    Star Wars Sticker Bombing

    • Another star wars fan spotted….how of you are there?????

  • +1

Will be a nightmare to remove the stickers one day.

  • +3

Imagine having to remove thousands of faded or peeling stickers.

    • Yes my thoughts exactly, must be some easy ways to remove them surely……

      Hope I don't inherit it….. honest don't want a star wars car!

  • +6

After the stickers are stuck on, it just might be the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.

    • Nah! He might love it for the first 3 months! After that who knows…..

      • +4

I believe strangeloops66 was referencing the films. The Millennium Falcon is dubbed "The Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy."

Sorry to explain the joke everyone but as OP isn't a Star Wars fan I didn't want it going unnoticed or being received in a mean way

        • +2

Ah! Now it makes sense! Thanks and good one

  • +1

He'll look like a total (profanity) driving that but each to their own

    • +3

I told him he isn't getting any girls for sure!

  • Its cute, let your dad have his fun. Why taking it so seriously? Its his car

    • +1

Well I am supportive….to an extent he doesn't actually use all 1000 of them……

      • +3

        You want some for yourself?

  • +1

Its called sticker bombing, Mighty car mods done a episode on it, its legal as long as the stickers are not offensive i guess. Seeing as its a new car maybe get the car vinyl wrapped first so if he changes hes mind the paint is still good. Some cars look good sticker bombed but most people do it over faded panels so it makes more sense as the paint is already ruined.

  • +4

    This is not the way.

    • 😄

  • +2

I love star wars (pre disney), but man this is definitely not the way. So much cringe factor. But his car, if it brings him joy why not as long as he has no intention of ever reselling.

  • Is he a 10 year old, old man?

  • +4

Your dads a bit of a legend isn't he

  • +2

    only ok if ep 4-6
    otherwise burn them

  • +2

As long as he's not fully changing the colour of the car ie if it's a black car and most of the car is black no issues…but if it's a black car and he is cover every surface in white…then the road authority in your state may want to know…

Otherwise paint fad around the stickers, stickers fusing to the paint as no matter what it says it will fuse over a few months or years. If will not be easy to remove. Trust me, from a guy who had a fully wrapped vehicle….after 2 years it was impossible to remove.

Oh and cringe…otherwise. let him do what he wants lol 😂 it's his car. What ever makes him happy.

  • One issue is weather damage. With no stickers the damage can be even (depending on where the car is parked). If the stickers are removed the paint underneath will be darker so the outline of the stickers will stand out.

A wrap would be better. I assume Disney licencing would be expensive.

  • No judgements, but 'ol dad is regressing to early childhood.
    Bless his heart.

  • +3

I hope the paint on those stickers is UV resistant, or the car will look like absolute rubbish very quickly.

I've seen people wrapping their car in favourite anime characters (the itasha, or pain car), but covering your vehicle in cheap little stickers seems to be something reserved for people who are not quite with it mentally.

    • Indeed, black is also the worst car to do something cool to it

  • Custom wrap. End of.

  • i would go for a proper vynal wrap

  • Stickers hit will UV from the sun will look awful shortly. The colours will fade pretty quick.

  • +1

Good on him for having a passion and hobbies he's still interested in at his age.

  • Here's the first link I found to a place that does car wraps in Perth - at least it gives an idea of what it may cost. The listed prices are for total closed-door wrap so I assume it would be better priced for a couple of individual panels.

    https://www.staging.cfsols.com.au/news/how-much-to-wrap-a-ca…

  • yeah, probably use a plasti dip spray paint or wrap sticker areas, then apply. A can of plasti dip paint is like $15, so you can try a small area. New cars paint is "valuable" and sets up how it will age.

  • +1

he obviously got the money, go for it! I'm not a fan of SW, but love that someone is so passionate about it. Good on him, life is too short.

Post picture of car here :)

  • Is your dad 12?

  • +3

The problem with some stickers may not come off cleanly. Nice little Audi tt roadster i bought to flip that the missus has claimed had 3 small pointless stickers. Two came off okay last one was basically baked on i removed it but you can still see where it was.

Tried everything except a cut and polish.

Let him know that could be a problem when it comes to removing them and reduced resale due to paint blemishes.

    • Totally passing the message on the future problems

  • +5

Haven't read any of the comments but I just have to say.
The cops would stop him just to admire the car.
    I would too
    Just saying
Tell your dad to stay awesome!

  • would definitely see about getting a wrap before putting stickers directly on the paint

  • what an absolute legend

  • +1

Given it's a new car, why don't you talk to a vinyl wrapping place and get it customised for his needs? It'll be thousand times better than putting a thousand random stickers on a new car. It'll cost bit more money but if he's been a true s/w fan I don't think he'd mind spending bit of extra for a really awesome finish!

Saw these mobs at the recent ev show in melbourne. Drop them a message and they might give some tips (afaik, they only do body kids for tesla, but perhaps they'll know some other company taking on jobs to what you need)

    • +1

Yeah! He is now open to the idea, before he didn't even know what vinyl wrapping is

  • -5

If Star Wars was created today it would never reach to this stupid franchise level (its just be forgotten like any small hype),
people worshiping this crap are just USA sheep

  • Good onya, Dad!

  • It's his car do what he wants

  • +1

plenty on Red Bubble, but they ain't cheap though

maybe your dad can get some inspiration from the Japanese?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itasha

    • +1

      Love it, nice find

      • No worries

BTW I post the above link in a positive way, let your dad enjoy his new toy 😁

  • I think it's an awesome idea, it will probably be the last car he will ever own. Let the man do what he wants, he won't care if there is any paint damage when he is 6 feet under.

    • Well he certainly isn't going to go away that easy, the man can still take me with one punch

  • Will your dad be applying any JarJar Binks stickers? They will dramatically increase the ‘cool’ factor 💯

    • You just made me use google! Lol

  • let him do it, he's 73 already. let him be happy with his passion

    • Didn't brought on eBay, he brought overseas coming from TW

  • +1

It will make it go faster; Most likely your dad will be able to make the KFC run in less than 12 parsecs.

He only has to inform the cop if he gets pulled over; These are not the decals that you are looking for. He can go about his business. Move along. Move along.

  • If I were him, I'd get the car clear wrapped first before putting all the stickers on. Easier to take off later.

  • I think he is teasing you.

You need a lot of stickers to sticker bomb a car, and clear coat

  • Did he ask you for advice? He's buying it, he can do whatever he wants.

  • As a massive forty year Star Wars fan (I hate the Disney era sh!te though) this would be too much for me. Personally I'd just do a Empire or Rebel / New Republic logo on the back window, or maybe on some fixed windows if the car has any. The other idea could be to do the Star Wars era timeline logos across the back window. Most people wouldn't recognise them apart from Star Wars nuts, low key except to those that know. Might be a way to sell it to your dad cause 50% chance you're going to have to be the one to remove them all.

  • Having gone through a sticker bombing phase (albeit as a university student), these stickers (i.e. eBay, AliExpress bulk sticker packs) are great for indoor use and on laptops or other small items. I would usually get a disposable phone case and sticker bomb that as opposed to my actual phone.

Do NOT stick them all over the car. They'll start yellowing pretty quickly under the harsh aussie sun with the amount of UV exposure we get, and the adhesive will more than likely be an absolute pain to remove once you realise it looks terrible from the yellowing. Removing that amount of adhesive from an entire panel will likely involve some kind of abrasion and that's just going to mess your paint. They're just not meant for outdoor use and it will look terrible very fast.

The other issue you get is peeling from the edges, which is worse in outdoor use because it'll collect and accumulate dirt. The only time I've ever seen it work was when my friend built a keeb, sticker bombed the case and then epoxy'd it. That gave it a smoother finish which actually looked passable.

It's a bad idea, stop him at all costs. There's plenty of other things to sticker bomb that aren't an entire car panel.

    • Thanks for the input. Sounds really like a bad idea the more I read into it.

  • Your dad has good taste

  • Legalities aside…

If the stickers he ordered are anything like the ones in that eBay link, and he is planning to put 1000 of those then the car will look like it has one of those camouflage wraps manufacturers use to hide their designs while road testing new cars, because those stickers are so small. (link https://www.google.com/search?q=camouflage+car&tbm=isch&sour… ), no one will be able to see what they are unless they are like 2 feet away..

And if he is only paying $5 for 50 pieces I guarantee you they will fade by the end of this summer, and all he’ll be left with are 1000 odd shaped white stickers, good luck removing them. The car will probably require a good cut and polish afterwards.

Sorry to say this, but that is a pretty stupid idea..

    • I will have a look at the quality when they arrive, also Perth has really sunny days so I doubt one summer they can even last that long.

  • Let him cook

Always supportive of a sci fi daddy

  • Don't do it with cheap stickers from ebay. Pay professionals to do a design and apply a good quality wrap. Cheap stickers are going to fade, go yellow and probably ruin the paint underneath in the long run.

There are lots of options with a custom wrap and the end result you end up with will no doubt be much better. Maybe get in touch with a local shop and see what they can do for you.

  • based on OP username - I suspect OP is stickering his/her car in anime stickers!

  • You got a wholesome dad.

I hope you get him a good graphic designer who can help him achieve his dream having a custom wrapped Star Wars theme around his car.
