Is There a Reason Flybuys Is Pushing People to Redeem Points Now?

Been a Coles person since coming to Australia, recently noticed Flybuys asking if I want to redeem points to knock $10 off everytime I shop at Coles. Over the years of using flybuys this has never happened before and I thought they would prefer people keeping points rather than offer discounts willingly. Unless this has something to do with the recent promotions for transferring flybuys to velocity points? Flybuys prefer people redeeming the points than transferring them over the Velocity?

relax bro you are thinking too much no one is pushing they just give options as people want this feature (similar with WW) and with this option you dont need to carry the physical card (but only can do $10 at a time)

    • I'm relaxed, just curious.

    • I just got linked here from searching Google to see if I can use those points without having to use the physical card (as I have it to my mum to use, and wtf is the point of it, when you have the app?)

Glad to hear you can! I have around $15 worth on points I didn't want to convert!

Currently got $24 sitting on the card I was pushed to "convert to flybuys dollars" that I can't use, and staff at all eligible stores NEVER ask my mum if she wants to (she is 73, she can't understand that it's literally the same as of you were using a bank card, but I agree it is a dumb, unnecessary extra step)

Same boat, keep being asked if want to redeem $10 and it's a fairly recent thing. Not sure what I'm saving it for but just keep saying not yet.

  • +1

Seems like the minimum spend has changed or they're pushing it further for lower value purchases. Understandable why they would when 'times are tough'.

Yeah, exactly. It's not a losing deal for Flybuys either: they get the benefit of appearing philanthropic to us unwashed masses when the costs of living are sky-high, and most customers who take the deal will be too thankful to notice that they're burning through $20 worth of Flybuys Monopoly funnymoney points for the convenience of an "instant $10 off".

      • Wait can you please explain this further? I am one of those plebs who have used this option a few times (and seems I may need to rethink this).

        • -1

Actually I just double-checked it and it turns out I was wrong: the conversion has always been 200 Flybuys points = $1AUD, which means the 2000pts->$10 is fine. Further, the conversion is actually worse for using the items catalogue, as it turns out. So never mind me.

Maybe the $10 conversion is the better deal after all. I'd always previously thought the Flybuys catalogue items were the good deal. I mean I suppose they still are, since it's all imaginary Monopoly money that came from nothing (or tithe for loyally paying premiums to Colesworth, depending on how you look at it), but I thought the conversion parity was higher for the catalogue items. Turns out it isn't.

          • @whatwasherproblem: I think so too. I always spend the points on Groceries or Coles Myer Group GC for use at Target, Kmart, Shell etc.

          • @whatwasherproblem: Dude, the whole fiat banking system is an imaginary construct to keep the unwashed masses in their open prison…

They always ask me if I want to spend it once I reach $10 worth of points. But that’s in person. Don’t recall the machines ever asking me. I always say yes, don’t see the point of saving up points.

    • To buy something of high value ?

      • What can you redeem of high value that is worth more than redeeming the points on groceries? Everything I've seen can be had cheaper on sale than the equivalent value in points, even when there are redemption "sales".

I much prefer automatically redeem $10 at checkout like WW.

But if you're asking why the move, maybe just following WW, or as a complete nonsensical wild guess just maybe they couldn't sell those points out like airlines do, which in-turn became a liability to the company on accounting terms similar to accrued annual leaves.

  • I thought you must have flybuys card with you to redeem the flybuys money, did they change that recently?

I want to use flybuys points but I never remember to bring the physical card to redeem it. I heard that if you use Coles Mastercard then you don't need the physical flybuys tho.

look up the phone app 'stocard'

      • That's not what I mean, I have the flybuys app that has barcode to scan.

For example this is what I currently do.

I convert 2,000 points into $10 flybuys dollars on my flybuys account. I go to Coles and buy something for $10. Now in order for me to use the flybuys dollars, I need to swipe the physical flybuys cards and put in the pin from when I converted the points.

This is all inline with what it says on coles/flybuys website on how to spend flybuys money.

        Pay with your Flybuys card
Select 'Pay with Card' at the checkout, swipe your physical Flybuys card through the EFTPOS machine and enter your PIN.

I get that if I want to collect flybuys points, I only need to scan the barcode when I am scanning the items. Is there an easier way to pay with flybuys dollars? OP's post makes it sound like I don't need the physical card, I just tap yes on screen to claim.

You can turn this function off in your flybuys account settings. You're better of converting to flybuys dollars and spending that way - they count as a spend rather than a discount and you earn flybuys on the flybuys dollars.

    • +1

Even more than that. If you are trying to meet a weekly spend this discount may mean you are under.

If you have a Coles financial product (credit card etc.) you can redeem 2000 points for $10 off your shop. Did you recently acquire a Coles financial product?

    • +2

This time it's not a CFS thing. More a new machine/new software thing. The ones at Broadway NSW have the same prompt and I don't have any CFS products (unless someone stole my hacked details and made one without my knowledge)

Coles / Flybuys has been slowly rolling out a feature where you can choose to redeem 2,000 Flybuys points for an instant $10 discount.

I first became aware of this feature in May 2023 when it was available at WA, NT, SA and TAS stores, as well as a handful of regional NSW and QLD stores. Coles / Flybuys added more stores in NSW, ACT and QLD a few weeks ago.

Some people will love this feature, because it will give them the chance to redeem 2,000 Flybuys points per day at Coles from their Flybuys account without needing their physical Flybuys card on them (nor any kind of authentication).

It is possible to switch this feature off on your Flybuys account if that is your preference, and I have done this myself by calling the Flybuys call centre.

    • Since this feature is enable, I slowly realized that someone redeemed by points few times. I called flybuys and they told me they will turn off that feature to avoid someone without physical card using my points. So now I have to bring the card with me in case I want to redeem.

      • +1

        That is quite concerning.

  • I swear it asks me every time and has been doing so for years…but perhaps I'm imagining it…

    • +2

Do you have a Coles Financial Services product? If yes, then that's why.

      • Yes, Coles MC.

        • Ah was about to comment that I also have constantly received this offer for years, but I also have a Coles MC.

      • Do you know why that makes a difference? Just wondering.

        • +1

          Ask CFS.

  • Finally managed to save up a decent amount of flybuys again… but haven’t ever seen anything worth buying..

What are you guys also doing with your points ?

    • Wait for the twice-a-year velocity conversion bonus. Use points for flights.

    • Last year I got a new iPhone, this year a week’s accommodation for a getaway, iPad for the wife, heaps of kitchen appliances etc.

      • Oh damn how many points was that in total? Probably took me about a year to earn $500 of points. That being said I’m super lazy with the bonus promotions.

        • +2

We generate somewhere around 150-200,000+ points per year. Everything goes on the NAB credit card which gives points, plus shop at Coles, and try and do bonus offers. I'm always getting 20,000 or 10,000 bonus offers from Coles for spending what I would normally anyway.

  • Unredeemed points are a liability to them. I think people built up points over Covid.

  • +1

With those $10 redeems now my balance is -715 FB points :)

I bet coles want you to shop more at coles. Or flybuys wants you to do more shopping even. Coles is happy because you keep buying, flybys is happy because each and every shop ads intimate personal data to your profile. And you are obviously happy because you think $10 off is too good to be true. Whoever buys your data is even more happy because they know you love to spend and can probably use that to get thousands off you in the long run.

  • This was around years ago; as someone else mentioned there is an option to turn this feature off.

    • +1

Only if you have a CFS product. Now it's for everyone.

  • Could be a flow on effect Woolworths rewards as been asking for a few years now.

  • Thats strange i got 50$ worth of point

But can only see option to buy gift card or change to velocity points

In the past could transfer point of a shop for any denomination value of $10

Anyone know why i cant transfer to $ of shop anymore

    • +1

You transfer points as flybuys dollars; then use your flybuys card like an eftpost card

      • Yep i done that in the past

But that option not available anymore

        • Yeah it is…that’s one of flybuys main selling points

  • +1

Just be aware, if you use the $10 off at checkout, you get 10 less Flybuy points for your purchase.
Likewise if you have a 5x shop, you get 50 less points.

Best to transfer toy your card and use your card as payment for full Flybuy points.

After all, save 10 flybuy points here, save 10 flybuy points there, soon you have 1000 flybuy points, buy a block of chocolate, enjoy.

    • +1

That has been my experience too, but rather confusingly, the related FAQ on the Flybuys website says otherwise:

If I take $10 off my shop, will I still collect points for the total amount before the Instant $10 is applied?

Yes, you will still receive points for the total amount of your shop. For example, if your total is $100, you will receive 100 points (assuming no bonus offers are applied), not 90 points.

I called Flybuys about this, the rep agreed something was not right and escalated this. The rep said I should hear from someone in 5 business days, but it has been three months and no one has reached out…

  • I should hear from someone…

This means you should if they had good customer service but they they know you won't.

  • its asked me for 40 off last night, possibly a xmas thing

  • Go to Flybuys app and turn off auto-redemption in settings. It asks because that setting is on by default since they introduced it a couple of months ago.
