      • Firstly, most card transactions are handled by VIsa/Mastercard. If China were to-do that on a grand scale, both of those companies would pull out of China, and they would lose hundreds of billions of dollars. Also, when you get charged by a merchant, the money isn't taken out immediately, the merchant processor just holds the funds. Once it gets settled, the transaction goes through. If China were to-do that on a grand scale, the transactions would simply get reversed by Visa/Mastercard.

Since Temu launch in September 2022, in less than a year they've gained 104 million paying users, doubt there would be a need for them to resort to low-level thief to earn a buck. But I can see why competitors are after them because they're a major threat. I have no doubts they did some dodgey stuff (capturing more data then they're suppose to) on their initial app release, but quickly changed tune after being found out. Also, there's a lot of unfounded accusations being tossed between US/Chinese companies. imo they're both as bad as each other.

        • You should read that article someone here linked to. They're not even profitable. You can't trust a Chinese business to tell the truth about themselves when their own government screws sheets of plyboard across waterways to hide flood damage so they can lie to their own people everything is a-ok. i.e. If the government lies that's a signal to Chinese businesses they're free to follow their example.

LOL. What competitors. They sell junk sourced from Aliexpress/Alibaba. They're no threat to other businesses because they're not creating anything new - just inserting themselves into the same supply chain that already existed, selling all the same things that were already made.

          • @[Deactivated]: Did you know that the report you mentioned actually comes from a short seller? On their homepage, in big letters, they state that the report and all statements are their opinions and not facts. So it's important to take that into consideration.

Remember TikTok? There were allegations about data being stolen, and under the last US administration they wanted TikTok sold or at least 50% owned by a US firm. Why do you think they want this?

NYTimes: "The fight over TikTok began in 2020 when Mr. Trump said he would ban the app unless ByteDance sold its stake to an American company, a move recommended by a group of federal agencies known as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS."

"The Trump administration eventually appeared to reach a deal for ByteDance to sell part of TikTok to Oracle, the U.S. cloud computing company, and Walmart. But the potential transaction never came to fruition."

"CFIUS staff and TikTok continued to negotiate a deal that would allow the app to operate in America. TikTok submitted a major draft of an agreement — which TikTok has called Project Texas — in August. Under the proposal, the company said it would store data belonging to U.S. users on server computers run by Oracle inside the United States."

When it comes to these platforms, both sides have their own issues. If you stay on US-based platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, the US government holds the power. On the other hand, if you choose TikTok or other Chinese platforms, the Chinese government holds power. It's a bit of a back-and-forth with both sides banning each other and saying negative things to sway public opinion. In the end, it's all about power and control and nothing about stealing data.

            • @noshopping: There are plenty of sources revealing Temu (or their employees) are bad actors, not just one site. And he HAS to say it's "opinion" because I saw they've "transferred" some address to the west, probably so they can threaten to sue people to shut them up. Doesn't change the facts he's gathered from other sources, and it doesn't change all the fraudulent bank charges that strangely happen right after buying on Temu.

And the US is still talking about banning TikTok - not just in the Trump era - I saw info about it again just last night.

To answer why they want this… it's because western laws actually protect most people most of the time. Force them to sell part to a US company and now they can be prosecuted.

Anyway, the day Temu goes bankrupt someone there can just copy everyone's bank details onto a thumbdrive. I can think of a dozen nefarious things they'll be able to do which owners of that info won't be able to do a thing about short of getting new bank accounts - which most won't bother doing. We've all dealt with dodgy scammers on Aliexpress. Well Temu are the same people on steroids. Or they at least employ some of them.

            • @noshopping: Unfortunately it's a bit of jealously. Us "white" countries can't believe a non white country can have a better thing than us. That's the bottom line. Only successful companies are targeted.

  • Temu, Temu, I'm shopping like a billionaire …

    • Is that you , Elon?

      • It's X

      • Did you know their ad has 800 million views… insane.

Temu should be banned. I've seen other businesses get banned on here for doing less wrong. And those other businesses, as far as we know, only did it to ozbargain people, whereas Temu is known worldwide for fraudulent bank charges, adding people to robocall lists, etc.

  • Why are there so many political comments on this site? I'm here just to find bargains. I reckon these political commentators should be kicked out. No place for them on this site.

  • The customer service is good, the products are hit and miss. Over-priced at full price. As stated earlier, grab the super cheap joining offers (which may trigger minimum purchase thresholds for free delivery), then raise a return request for the stuff you don't want - or all of it. They usually just refund rather than mange the hassle of paying return postage - which tells you all you need to know about the actual value of the merchandise.

    • Btw heres a trick to remove the minimum delivery- just go to support and ask remove minimum delivery threshold, follow what they say and it’s removed!!
