Is not the major OS upgrade support for these ending soon?

    • A few more years probably. MacOS Sonoma supports some Macs made in 2017.

      • Yeah just the iMac pro of 2017. The rest of the lineup needs to be at least made in 2018 or later to get it, so 5 years from inception to EOL in terms of major OS updates. M1 was debuted in 2020 so 2 more years to go.

      Interesting why you'd think that.

      • +1

Why wouldn't I? Every chip has an end of life in terms of what OS supports it. M1 came out in 2020, so it's been already almost 4 years, so if it is lucky, it will get another 2-3 years of OS support and that'd be it.

          From wikipedia:

According to an Ars Technica analysis, 2016 and 2017 Macs received on average six years of updates, lower than the 7–8 years of updates received by Intel Macs released from 2009 to 2015.

Fair point, yet I'd expect them to be fully usable a couple of years past the point no major OS version is available for them.

        • already almost 4 years

Not quite 3 years old yet, and they tend to get major OS updates for 7 years + security updates for another 2. You're looking at 5-6 years of usable life which is acceptable for ~$1k imo.

          • @Dogsrule: Mac OS Sonoma was released a week ago and it only supports Mac laptops released in and after 2018. Where did you get the 7+2 figure from?

            • +1

@Rimas: Big Sur was released in Nov 2020 and supports Mac's from 2013. It is still supported with security updates.

Sonoma dropping Intel Mac's earlier than usual is because Apple want to stop supporting Intel stuff as quickly as they can, M chips should go back to normal support cycles.

This is basically normal price before they got inflated. And it's only 8GB RAM with 256GB storage - not worth it imo.
