140k points is achievable by applying for 2 credit cards (annual fees probably $600 or less)

I think much easier to earn points that way

but then you don't get to go to Antarctica :/

Pro-level is applying for two credit cards to pay for the Antarctica tour ;)

Yes you can, airlines often release international First and Business Classic Rewards 365-330 days out from departure and 1-14 days out from departure.
I made a RTW booking using Qantas Points for next year, 318,000 for up to 16 sectors.

This is actually a pretty good deal for the very niche subset of ozbargainers looking to go to Antarctica

Sub-Antarctic islands only, not the real deal Antarctica……….

Still kicking myself by not taking a 10 day re-supply voyage out of Ushuaia back in 1989, only $40 a bloody night. Sure, not a real cruise boat, but……..

    • "continue on to the Antarctic Peninsula, where you’ll enjoy outings to bays, islands and straits on Zodiac boats. "

No more than 2 days out of ~15 days. I would want a few more days, so it wasn’t a disaster trip with a bit of bad weather at that time.

    • Dang that would have been sweet.

  • I have heard that if you are somewhat flexible with departures and book your trip a day or two out while in Ushuaia for about half this price

    • -1

Absolutely, but usually only at the start/end of the cruise ship season. Have a good friend who did that a few years back.

  • Points aside, I'd probably rather go to Svalbard.

Heading over to Longyearbyen in December. Cannot wait. Husky sleighing has been on my list for a while.

      • Lucky bugger. Have a safe and awesome time.

        • It took a while to plan it out, but it is def something to do once in a lifetime.

          • @AircraftFreight: The Titanic submersible tour was a once in a lifetime thing to do too but look how it turned out.

For anyone thinking about visiting Antanrctica. I very strongly recommend Antarctica21. They do small-boat tours with plenty of Zodiac time, enthusiastic guides and some of the best food Ive ever had. (Still trying to shake those extra 5 kilos I packed on last summer.)
