a bit of a dumb general question but how can you tell which sneakers are good for running in verses those that look like runners but are more for fashion?

    • +8

IMO, most New Balance shoes are tailored towards sports and performance.

Nike is the sshytty brand when it comes to real performance.

      • +7

Not true of their pegasus running shoe which is terrific value.

        • +2

Nike has some great stuff, but if you have no idea what is a running shoe, you could easily wind up buying TNs.

          Same with adidas.

New Balance don't put a lot of effort into fashion lines…

        • Agree, Adidas a better example

      • I have been using Asics over the past decade (kayanos etc) and find then amazing. Recently bought $250 Nike airmax shoes as I wanted just something different (i don’t run). i use them now for gardening as they are tough and ok to wear for up to 30min. Back to Asics

In a similar boat, found this subreddit/guide to be pretty helpful.

    • +5

My general idea is to go to https://runrepeat.com/ sort by your size and price and buy the highest rated shoes. In this case they are rated 79, which is below what I would usually go for.

    • +5

The very simple rule of thumb? Look in places like athletes foot, or rebel… actual running or sports stores.

The cheaper end is always going to have corners cut (less cushioning, or less support, perhaps), so look in the $150+ range, and then look out for those shoes going on clearance at a more reasonable price. They cycle styles every year/season without drastic improvements, so you'll find a high quality shoe at a good price in no time.

Stuff you find in foot locker and jd sports are fashion forward. Of course they might sell some fashion-conscious running shoes, but if you have no idea what you're looking at then it's crap shoot.

I've used these before. They are ok, nothing special, but fine.

    • +1

Technically they are all/mostly running shoes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsdynrdDxko Video about it becoming trendier even though they have kept the same style since starting. The "meta" these days for running shoes is a chunky foam outsole and usually a cloth upper. Don't mind plastic uppers myself as they are more durable.

Almost anything I buy now, I'll search it up in YouTube for a review. 9/10 someone has done a review on it. Especially running shoes (and electronics), there's lots of yt running channels.

  • Any other colours

  • Thanks, needed a new pair of shoes, can't argue with $51

Still raw from the Skechers cancellation earlier today.

  • +7
    • Ah dammit, I just tried to cancel my ebay order but it says it might take 3 days, not worth the risk to order a pair from Amazon until I find out if ebay will cancel.

      • +3

Good luck with that. eBay support is useless for cancellation. You may as well directly contact NB to get it cancelled. This is what i had to do for my Dryer order from Appliance Online via eBay.

        • I received confirmation of the cancellation.

      • Free returns on Amazon for those if the cancellation doesn't stick.

      • That price is for prime subscribes only, otherwise $60.

    • this item cannot be shipped to this address, WTF

Edit: Used pick up from those Lotto/ newsagency booth thing

  • Thanks OP, just bought.

    • Strange, getting this: "This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location." - Melbourne Metro

    • +1

      That's not V2

      • What is it then?

      • +1

the pic is v2, but the title is v1. i didnt want to take the chance as Amazon may say it was delivered as per the title, so I ordered off ebay.

        • Clearly says it is v2:
          Manufacturer ‏ : ‎ NEW BALANCE
          ASIN ‏ : ‎ B08MXMWMGL
          Item Model Number ‏ : ‎ MROAVV2
          Department ‏ : ‎ Mens

So if it is not v2 what gets delivered it is not as described.

    • I was going to say - I just bought these the other day from Amazon for less.

  • Got a couple of pairs. Thanks

  • +3

Can't speak for the Roav V2 but i have More V3 and what a fantastic shoe! The cushioning is out of this world and allows a noob runner like me to churn out runs without knee problems (>30 Years playing Tennis is not knee-friendly). Energy return is a revelation as its not simply running on a marshmallow.
Do yourselves a favour; if you've never bought any newish shoes with these "foams" (many brands call it different things) then you're in for a real treat.
I'm sure there are lots of more accomplished runners here who can chime in.
Recently bought Puma Deviate Nitro 2 (Nitro is what they call their "foam").

    • +1

Is it more comofortable than Ultraboost?

      • I've only got a much older Ultraboost 19 to compare it to and that its chalk and cheese if you're talking about the cushioning.

If you're asking about the actual upper, then the Adidas wins hands down with the stretch knit, one-piece design.

      • I used to primarily wear Ultraboosts but decided to look into max cushioned alternatives recently. Shoe comfort seems to have come a long way, and after trying out several pairs my current favourite is the Asics Nimbus 25. Simultaneously lighter and much better cushioned.

Some other notable mentions are the New Balance More/1080 and Hoka Clifton/Bondi.

Haven't tried the Roav in this deal and there's probably nothing wrong with it, but the max cushion options mentioned above are on a completely different tier (and price range) if you're looking to maximise comfort.

        • Never worn any Asics for any sport as they're out of my price range. Same with Hoka. I'd like to try Saucony Endorphin line next.
I still have old Reebok Ziglite something-or-rather in good condition, and they feel like wooden clogs compared to modern runners.

  • +2

I would of bought for the price, if size 13.

Definitely good for winter, triple black so I wear them out wearing them 4-5 times a week.

  • code doesnt work for me

    • +1

Which code? (OCT17 is for Plus members only.)

  • I have a pair 857's that are coming unglued. I found them in an op shop for $8 several years ago. They've been pretty comfortable but I was never sure if just walking around in daily life is what they were designed for. Are these good for that kind of use?

    • Two completely different designs/purposes.
If you have no issues with stability when walking, then the Fresh Foam "runners" are a joy to walk in for the whole day.

      • Thanks. I might get a pair of these since I never see the 857s reduced.

Sorry did you mean "857" and these "Fresh Foam Roav V2" are completely different, or that I shouldn't have been using the 857s for general/daily use?

        • 857 have leather uppers, stiff soles and designed as everyday "casual" shoes with little cushioning. Roav is a sports shoe with fabric upper and foam soles.
The 857 is geared toward stability and if you dont need that you will be a lot more happy walking aroun in any of the Fresh Foam range vice versa

          • @Steampunk: Ah I see. Yes the 857s are flat and hard/stiff on the bottom. Thanks.

  • +1

I returned my fresh foam v2 shoes as they were stiff and not comfortable, my 2c.

  • only US 7/9/10 in stock now

  • returned. sizing smaller than normal. should have read reviews.
