HD599 Ivory is only $145. Wanted that colour but got the black on last sale :(

  • How old are these headphones? I've been wanting new headphones for a while.

    • +75

If you buy them, they’ll be new

    • +1

To give you an idea, I have had both of these headphones over the past 10-15 years. They're definitely not a new design, but they'll be new manufactures.

      • How's the mic on the HD450SE? Is it good for talking - especially in noisy surroundings?

        • I doubt they've updated the mic since I purchased it back in 2014.

It was very much a mic from 2014 lol

  • +4

I'm getting additional 5% off on the HD450SE with a promo code EL5OFF

I just got the Anker soundcore Q35 for roughly the save money. It's still unopened in its Amazon box. Anyone have strong knowledgable opinions on if it's worth returning the Q35s and getting the hd 450se.

I rate sound quality (fairly balanced, not a bass fiend), comfort and easy controls over noise cancellation. But semi-decent noise cancellation still a necessity.

    • +5

450se are dogsh1t. The pads are small and uncomfortable. They rip within a year.

Noice cancellation only works on low repetitive noise like aircon. Non existent for anything else.

Horribly tuned and lack bass and detail. I think you should prioritise comfort for the reasons above regardless of how things will sound.

      • Thanks

    • +1

Q35s are much better from all the research I have seen.

      • Thanks.

    • I'm in the exact same boat. Going overseas so will need the noise cancelling type headphones for a budget price. Not sure if its worth spending the money on a Sony since ill only really use it traveling which would not be often.

      • -1

Get the focal bathys from addicted to audio and you can have better sound quality with noise cancellation for not much more than the sony.

  • Both deals seem to have expired (or been OzBargained). 450s are showing up at $198, and 599s at $214.

The 598/599 have really good sound quality.

    • +7

Showing as 110 for me, Prime only, must be logged in.

      • Same still $110 logged in with prime

        • -1

Are you sure this is AUD price for 599? It appears to be 118 USD + 16 USD for delivery from the US + exchange rate difference = 214 AUD. So the Prime discounts just 8 bucks from the initial 118 USD.

          • @Ozzster:

            Are you sure

Mate, I’ve shopped online before. I’m on Amazon.com.au which is set to AUD.

Not sure what issue you’re having, but no need to gaslight people by saying “are you sure”.

            • @jjjaar: Alright, I just have activated Prime and the prices for 599 have changed to 150/145 for black/ivory. Good, but not as good as $110. Any suggestions how to get 110? There is a 5% discount for the black one via promo code: EL5OFF, but after all it is still $142.5, not 110.

              • @Ozzster: $110 is for the other pair HD450SE

                • @jlogic: Oh, then I'm getting the right price. Thanks mate.

This is the only brand can compete with Yamaha in general, though not sure this particular item can beat equivalent Yamaha.

    • +6

      What?

    • +2

Try the Audio Technica or beyerdynamic or Shure or high end Sony

      • Audio Technica may have fake specs. I bought some headphones claimed 100 Ohms, which I measured as 33.9 and 35.2 directly on the speakers, which means not only far worse specs, but also low quality of components.

        • Been using audio technica for decades mate.

Try disconnecting the wires from each speaker then measure the resistance. Many youtube tutorials will show you how to measure impedance.

          • @Hydralyte: That's exactly how I did it. The idea was to replace a dead speaker from HD59* with Audio Technica"s from the above price range. Nope, quality difference was so huge and noticeable that Sennheiser in my eyes has earned even more respect. Btw, Sennheiser' impendance was true 50.1 and 49.9 Ohm, which meets the specs.

  • Are the earcups leather or PU?

    • +1

      10000000% PU like most.

      • Yeap just Googled it, PU.

  • this price looks like it should be the normal price given how it stacks up to other 300 sets, i am very tempted tho as i need a new pair

  • -4

Not worth, just save for Bose 700s

  • -1

Seeking advice. I am not an audiophile or have much knowledge about headphones.
I am currently using the cheap bluetooth Taotronics headphones for some time now. If i were to get the HD 599 and connect it to my pixel using the a USB c to 3.5mm adapter. Would it make significant improvement in sound quality? does the use of adapter makes the performance and worse?
    thanks

    • +2

Depends where you are listening to the music/movies/etc. The HD 599 are open back so sounds go out and sounds go in. So on public transport or in an office setting… you might not be very popular, as others can hear the sounds coming from the headphones.

Definitely will be an upgrade in sound quality over the Taotronics.

    • +1

Following on from that, it most definitely would sound better, but only if you're in a quiet environment eg at home. I think n analogy would be like upgrading a crappy base model car stereo to a proper aftermarket car audio system…

If you aren't listening for it, I don't think the adaptor would make a difference in this case. However, I have no idea how the adaptor works, so ymmv.

      • Thks everyone, i intended to use it on flights and occasionally trains, so open ear ones are definentely a no go it seems. Do you guys think the 450SE would be significantly better than taotronics one? Online reviews suggest its slightly above mediocore and I would rate the taotronics as slightly below average

        • +1

Best bet would be to have a look at something like the What Hi-Fi or rtings guides to get an idea of what would suit you best.

        • Which taotronics do you have?

Ive got a TT soundsurge 90 and I think its quite good. Compared to my sennheiser momentum 3, I find the ANC more comfortable (no notable cabin pressure effect). But sound quality on the momentum is way better.

The TT is still pretty very good for music listening to most people IMO (including myself), its decently tuned for bass

My TT earpads is starting to peel after almost 2 years, contemplating whether or not it's worth replacing

          • @Butt Scratcher: Yeah I've got the 090 as well. I am facing the same issue of peeling cups, I've just completely unpeeled them now. I don't have any issues with sound quality of the headphones, I think they're average or slightly below. It's just that i have never tried anything better to compare them with

    • +1

HD 599 and other open back headphones should not be compared with Bluetooth or other wireless ear/headphones.

These hd 599 will have a lot of noise leak both in and out. I.e. you'll hear everything else around you, and anyone around you will hear what you're listening too. They'll work fine with a USB C DAC (Apple's USB C to 3.5mm is highly regarded for the price point and will drive the HD 599 fine). Use of adapter will generally improve sound quality.

I'm about to order a pair to replace my broken hd 595s and pc37x. They'll definitely be a significant upgrade in sound quality, but don't expect much bass (which is typical for open back headphones).

  • Considering buying these to replace the overpriced Momentum 4's which have firmware updates that seem to make them worse with every iteration, worse you can't roll back.

In 3 days there will be a big sale, whicn in previous years had even more massive price drops. And more scam sendind you 10-bucks items instead.

    • What are you on about?

      • +5

        Ozzster to English translator:

Amazon will have its Prime Day sales event in three days from now, which may see bigger bargainz.

However Prime Day sales may have an increased risk of receiving non-genuine products.

  • I’d the 450 much of an upgrade on the 350?

  • Can you replace the Ear pads on these Sennheiser HD450SE

    Anyone know?

  • Something that was bothering me was not knowing the difference between the 599 vs. 599SE black - "Sennheiser The only difference between the Sennheiser HD 599 SE and HD 599 is the paint. The Sennheiser HD 599 SE is just a black/silver version of the Sennheiser HD 599. Other than the new paint job, you get the same two cables and the same set of ear pads as you'll find with the standard HD 599."

    • Thank you - just what I was trying to work out :)
