Maccas App Charging for Things I Didn't Order

I order a lot of Maccas I won't lie, love it when they do 24 nuggets for $10 mmm yes what a treat. It's happened more than a few times now though where I'd order some stuff on the app, pay, tell the cashier the code, and then they'll bring out more than I ordered.

Just this morning in the drive-thru they went to hand me a large Fanta which I apparently ordered. I said I didn't order it and she (the manager) was super quick to get me a cash refund. Seeing how quickly she handled that makes me think she's seen it a few times too.

Lo and behold I checked the order and the large Fanta had snuck itself in there. It's definitely not user error. The pay screen showed a lower price than my credit card transaction log, so something's definitely going on there.

Has this happened to you? What's your experience with the app been?

What did McDonalds say when you contacted them?

    • +38

Would you like fries with that.

      • -3

The App must add drinks and fries automatically these days instead of a person asking

    • +5

      bur-ah-bup-bup-bup

  • +3

Haven't experienced it myself but I only really order the app deals and usually at kiosk so less likely to have extra items added to the order "by accident".

  • I have found issues when you use the app and confirm twice - my main issue is that it then charges my the full price even though the screen size the “promo price”.

  • +15

I’m pretty sure the attendant can modify your order, as I’ve been asked if I want to add anything at the window before. Maybe they accidentally added someone else’s Fanta to your order. They often get orders out of sequence on those multilane drive throughs, so I could definitely see that mistake being made.

    • +5

I think this is what's happening.
It's unlikely the app can just magically add products by itself.

    • Sounds about right. Bit surprising they can add something after I've hit pay, I would've thought they'd make me pay more at the booth if I add something afterwards. I guess that's all in the name of Convenience™

      • +2

Transaction doesn’t go through until you get to the payment window. So I assume they can modify the order up until then.

        • Not true, I hit "Order", before the "Drive-thru" or "In-store" options and I get the notification from my bank that the money has already been taken.

          • @HamBoi69: I think it’s just a preauth

            • @djsweet: Maybe. But then why the full amount? Also, the email with the receipt comes through before the payment window. I was stuck in the line for 5 minutes the other day, didn't move past the merge of the 2 ordering lanes and I got the email.

              • @HamBoi69: Hmm okay, maybe they already finalised your order at the speaker. Could depend on the store? Usually I don’t get my receipt till after I go by the payment window.

                • @djsweet: Funny part was, the car next to me pulled in front and the lady at the payment window got our orders mixed up in terms of order. I’m not suggesting you’re right or I’m wrong. Just my observations.

      • They definitely can completely change it. I had an order where for some reason the payment didn't go through. They sent me to the next window anyway, then said the payment didn't go through, they can't take payment there and wouldn't take my card to tap. They said I had to go around again but the line was too long so I just left. They ended up putting the order through as a free salt packet, which I guess they have to do to get it off the screen once it's there. I could still edit the order on the app too.

I ordered a happy meal on the app, they gave me 3 cokes. I said what's this? They said it's what I ordered. I checked the app - it said I ordered 3 cokes.
I went back to the car quite disappointed. Never used the app to order again.

    • Were you happier with 3 cokes?

  • +4

    Should stick with KFC

    • +7

The Fanta is better at Hungry Jack's.

      • Yes! Why is that though? It's much better than the cans or bottles. I thought it might just be the store near me but it's the same everywhere.

        • +1

I believe fountain Fanta is still the old full sugar recipe but bottled Fanta is the new vomit-inducing "no-one asked for this" recipe.

      nah chicken nuggets too good

      • -4

        Hardly qualifies as 'chicken'

        • It is literally Chicken though. You wouldn't say that bread isn't made from wheat just because it's been ground up into a sludge and baked.

You could say it doesn't qualify as 'chicken breast' or similar, though, as it is almost certainly made from guts, cartledge and whatever random meat their industrial rolling pin squeezes off the carcass.

I had a strange 1 with the App a couple of years ago.
Went on a roadtrip, stopped at a town and ordered some Mcass on the app.
Fast forward a couple of days later after we got back from our trip and my email gets an alert about a Mcass order I placed. It was about $12 worth of breakfeast food.
It was at a town we didn't order Mcass through on our trip but did pass through that town.
It used my account, my credit card and my Mcdonalds app password was unique, I hadn't used that password for any other thing.

I rang Mcdonalds and explained what happened, I told them I thought they might have a breach on their end, of course they denied this, they did issue me a refund though.
It was enough for me to cancel that credit card.

It never happened again but it was just a bit weird as if someone else somehow stole my login details surely they would order a bit more than just a sausage and egg muffin meal or what ever it was, they didn't even order pancakes with it. Makes me think their system glitched, I never chased up to see if the Mcdonalds was owned by the same franchisee as the town we did get it from during our trip.

    • Mcass

      Fast food.

    • How bizarre. Similar thing happened to me. Ordered my food and was charged correct amount. Another order came through at the same restaurant few hours later for a completely different order.

Love the 24 nuggs for $10, can’t go wrong with that. Literally my protein meal twice a week

      They aren't $10.

The app can be a bit funny with previous orders and other items that might be in the "cart". I've had it before where it had re-ordered a previous order for me which was food when I just wanted coffees. Just have to double-check it all the time, learnt from that mistake.

The app is great, but just need to be careful at times with what might be in your cart already.

Either that, or the attendants are being cheeky adding small things. I wonder if it is just your local maccas?

  • I've done a dozen orders, and no problems with any of them. But these orders are in store.

  • I just bring up the code and say it to them at the drive-thru.

No chance I'll be putting card details into their dodgy app. KFC accepts paypal, that's much better.

    • KFC app also accepts Apple Pay (and possibly Google as well?) even better better!

      • KFC app also accepts Apple Pay

        So does Maccas.

        • Ah yeah good point - when I first started using it you had to enter credit card details, but realised I don’t even have a credit card on file with Maccas any more!

  • Had the same thing happen with the new Domino's app the newest release.

Got triple charged using debit card I guess technically credit card option on the app.

Lucky it was only for a mini pizza which was $3 at the time.. Since then I only use PayPal now for delivery or card if in store.

They might have fixed it might have not but I'm not gambling that on a big order.

Might test it if I do a small order again but honestly that one hiccup made me a bit nervous now of the Domino's app.

  • I always check the order on the screen when I'm at the drive-thru - to check it matches what I ordered, and if I can I look at the receipt that gets emailed to me at the same time while I'm waiting for the order to be made up.

A bit of a pain but it prevents any mis-orders.

What it can't of course prevent is them not putting what you ordered in the actual bags

  • I had something similar happen to me recently. I added some items to my cart, then removed one and added a different item. It didn't apply my more recent actions and despite what the order preview showed, it ordered the wrong items which were seen in the order confirmation. Their latest app release is buggy as all hell and they clearly don't take the time to test it at all!

Sounds like the sort of scam they'd pull. Use cash baby, cash is KING and you control it.

Plus, stop eating that trash, maccas gives you cancer man.

  • Has happened to me once before, and they said they couldn't refund it (blatant lie) so I have never been back

  • +2

Yea the app does that all the time. The app is a hot mess at times.

    • Sometimes it keeps things in the cart that you removed. But you don't see it in the cart, but you'll get charged for it, so you have to make sure the charge amount is the same as the cart amount. That's the only way to know it's right. I suspect this is what's happened to you
    • Sometimes it randomly removes things from the cart
    • Sometimes even if you've processed an order, picked it up, eaten it and a few days later return to the app. That order will be in the cart as though you never processed it, and if you add something without looking, you'll end up with the old order plus the new one.
    • Sometimes I can't make a new order because it thinks I'm in the middle of one from a few days ago and I can't get rid of it unless I go into the app settings and clear the cache and data and log in again..

Overall not a great app. But on the 80% times it works, it's fine.

I made an order for a meal in Newcastle once.
Went to the drive thru and they couldn’t find my code.
My email had a receipt for a store in Northern Territory for the same order with all the changes.. And my card was charged to a store in QLD.
I rang maccas and they just claimed someone is using my account and made an order..
Anyway I got a chargeback from the bank and I never changed my password. Hasn’t happened again.

  • +3

The app is broken. Pretty pathetic from a company of this scale.

There is nothing sent back to the app saying the order has been completed, the items from your last order still show in the cart the next time you open the app. I'm guessing this may have happened to OP and they just didn't notice it in the cart already.

You cant even order a deluxe ice coffee as part of a meal. After selecting it, you have no option to add it to the order. It has been broken for well over a year now.

  • +1

I have never had an issue, and am able to maintain a reasonable level of obesity

  • Sorry to say this mate… but it sounds like your app hasn't been faithful 😢

  • I manually changed the app from one store to another store, put my order through, checked in from within the geofence. It sent my order to a completely different third store. When I reported to maccas they just kept saying "Oh you've got to make sure you select the store you want as it will autoupdate to the nearest store"… yeah mate I f****ing did that d****heads.

The most annoying part is there's no livechat or support number, you fill out a form which promises a follow-up within 2 days.. guess who didn't get a follow-up 2 days later and had to call head office.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me last week! App sent it to a random McDonald's a good distance away from mine even with multiple closer ones between. I did get a response after 2 days but it was extremely generic and diddnt even address what happened.

  • Via the app I had the same order go through twice at exactly the same time (to the second) and was charged twice for it, and delivered twice.

I have to call to dispute it, can't be done online

  • -1

    Definitely user error.

  • I stopped using the app a couple of years ago when the order went through against the bank account but the store didn't receive it and neither the store nor their online app staff would take responsibility, both saying they couldn't see it on their system. I had to fight but eventually got store credit. Took a month and it was a large order. Uninstalled the app.

  • I had this sort of thing happen to two of my orders a few months back, first time I thought maybe I made the mistake but the second time I was sure it wasn't me, when I asked the store staff about it they say to contact help via app….totally useless and waste of time.

After that I ALWAYS ask to check the order on the drive-thru screen to make sure it's the same as my app order, twice I found the store added extra drink or fries on top of my app order which I had to ask to remove as it wasn't in the app order. Just check on the screen, if they don't show the screen ask to see it and make sure the amount it the same as what's on the app.

  • similar but not same company

when dominos rolled over onto the new app i got triple charged using my credit card payment that i used on the previous app

lucky it was only for a mini pizza so i was only out $9 for a $3 pizza (can't believe how much inflation has risen since that time)

but yeah since then now i am paranoid to use the cc payment on the app and just do in store cc

if i do delivery i do paypal now to make sure certain i am paying what i am paying

it sucks but one little mistake can cause so much badwill i didnt really know until i was a victim of one
