Was shopping for a projector or a second TV for our master bedroom, as we don't have one and stumbled upon this deal. Looks like a decent saving, still more expensive than TCL or Hisense, but it is Sony, so I am more inclined towards it. Decided I will share.

Factor in buying a Google TV or Apple TV to go with it. The inbuilt Google TV really is much worse.

    • Hi! Thanks for the tip! By buying google tv you mean like chromecast? We currently have a Hisense in the living room, and we are having troubles with built in Netflix and Prime. Connection to wifi drops out frequently, too… I would have thought that Sony should be better…

In my experience, both my Sony tv's are terrible, often losing WiFi, lagging, closing apps, freezing, logging out of apps, being super slow in general.
A Google TV will have all the apps on it, and run very well, just like an Apple TV. A chromecast is just for casting to, doesn't have apps on it.

Why are you trying to confuse the person? Just get an amazon fire tv stick 4k for $39 in this sale and forget about it. No point buying the chromecast or apple tv unless you have a reason to

          • @simontadaa: Minimising exposure to Amazon’s harvesting’s a pretty good reason though I guess if you’re on Prime you’ve already made your call on that score.

        • My experience using a X90F and X90K over the past 5 years has been very different. I regularly use some of the built-in streaming apps, NordVPN from the app store and 2 sideloaded Kodi builds (21 alpha and KodiNerds 19.4) primarily for Dolby Vision content and don't have any issues with any of them freezing, lagging, closing or being logged out. The 90F could be a bit sluggish at times in the system menus but it was still decent enough overall and more than usable, the 90K meanwhile has been very smooth.

I can't really comment much on the WiFi since I've almost always used cable, but the few times I have tested WiFi I had no issues even when going through an old 802.11g access point. WiFi drop outs are also often more to do with external interference than the actual device itself too.

          • @Sarvok: Oh nice! Yea my x90f picture looks decent, but yea the google TV side is terrible. I have an lg c9 that’s further away from the wifi access point and never lags and overall much easier to use and much faster. The Apple TV I got for the x90f has transformed the tv for sure, still average picture though.

This’s good advice for pretty well any tv, dumb or smart

No need for LG IME. The apps are fine.

        • You trust LG in so far as data harvesting?

It’s not just about updates and interface performance or app selection, though these things are likely to degrade over time.

          • @0jay: I trust no one with regard to data harvesting. Unfortunately my data has already been harvested by every website/service etc etc.

            • @Naigrabzo: It’s ongoing, doesn’t stop.

Good to mitigate it anyway y can

@0jay: So the solution is to invite another company into the data harvesting mix?

                • @Lebofly: The solution (such as there is one) is to be vigilant about what and who you trust and how. Some platforms are fundamentally problematic, especially when folks are more or less indiscriminate with what they install and from where.

I’d argue AppleTV, NVDIA Shield and Roku are probably pretty secure platforms, certainly in comparison to smart TV’s inbuilt solutions.

Locking off your smart tv from the network’s excluding an insecure platform in favour of one that is comparatively reliable imo

@Lebofly: I own an LH TV

It literally keeps a folder with all the file names and types of files you've opened from HDDs and attached media.

It tries to export this file every so often.

I have almost all traffic out to lg domains blocked by my pihole and my router.

Doesn't seem to affect updates or functionality.

Really annoys me that I have to go to those lengths for a modicum of privacy for a TV I paid for.

                  Sony are roughly as bad.

Lesser known Chinese brands are even worse.

              • @0jay: IT will never stop. I have a google phone. :)

                • @Naigrabzo:

                  I have a google phone

                  nuff sed

                  • @0jay: Google PIXEL! They have all the data. I don't really mind it though. Enjoy the maps, gmail, free docs, slides etc.

  • Is ti anywhere similar to TCL C845?
