    Indeed EOL avoid

If all you care about is only Asus official firmware, then this router is EOL (so most likely no more official firmware updates).

However, there is custom firmware development for this so there will still be new versions of firmware available. That said, since this router uses the 386 firmware path, do not expect features in Asus router firmware 388 path. If you are uncomfortable running custom firmware OR you are not able to find that custom firmware site, then you should really think about it before you buy.

It's all relative. For example, if you use OPNsense, the next update is next year, so what do you plan to do with reported security vulnerabilities? Patch them yourself now or wait till next year? Also, one of the latest vulnerabilities Asus patched for its still active routers was reported back in 2020. Yes, it looks bad that it took Asus 3 years to patch it. Thing is, it is a feature that 99% of us don't use so does it really matter?

  • Should still be fine to use as a mesh point even though EOL right?

    • Also asking for this, just bought also but comments on this post wanting to make me refund

      • If you are uncomfortable with the EOL status of the product, then best to cancel / seek a refund.

Personally, I would only get this router mainly to run custom firmware and muck around with it. It's a pity that the CPU inside the router isn't as strong as I like (considered how bulky this router is). Don't forget, a lot of people get Asus routers capable of running custom firmware because you get more security patches that way.

If you prefer a more plug and play setup, then get a current and decent Asus router because it has auto firmware update feature (or a competing router with that feature). Most of them aren't discounted at the moment though.

    • Depends on the vulnerabilities. If we looked at the recent ones patched by Asus since the latest version of the firmware for this router, then you should be okay for now. Honestly, if you really want to nitpick, two of them require being on your network (WiFi or LAN) in order to exploit them (and honestly, if one already managed that, that person would spend more time hacking your network, rather than using those 2 pretty dumb ways). The remaining one, 99% of us don't run that type of setup. Put it this way, if you run that setup, you are rich enough (this router is a bad choice to run that setup).

      • I was going to use with an XT8 as the router which I think is still supported so will risk it. Thanks for the reply.

        • You sure that's compatible with Asus AiMesh? Thought that's a different Mesh system.

          • @netsurfer: From what I can see it should work. The XT8 notes say it can be extended with other Asus aimesh routers. I guess it can be returned if it doesn't.

    • Not sure how rampant is this but my RT-AX92 two pack has issues with AI-MESH randomly disconnecting (about once a month) and requires a power reset to restore. This is despite using Ethernet as a backhaul. I wouldn't recommend this model. However I must say its Wi-Fi radio performance is very strong.
