All tour companies do this. Some worse than others. Generally, the smaller the tour group the less this happens. Just don't fall for the spiel on expensive stuff - Swiss watches, Turkish rugs, Swarovski crystal stuff, etc. And have a rule that you don't buy crap you wouldn't buy at home ie. cuckoo clocks, clogs, cowbells and all the rest.
Some of Contiki's options (aka purchasing opportunities) are actually reasonably good, I do recall the Schnapps Museum with fondness LOL.
I preferred the cheap Schnapps we bought in a local shop in Innsbruck (not a Contiki store)… It was cheaper than buying bottled water… :)
I've just been to the Schnapps Museum in March this year, fond memories - especially the old guy showing all the men the 'leg opener'.

we went to New Zealand with Contiki and weren't really pressured to go to any shops basically the bus took us to the hotel and then we were free to do whatever we wanted apart from visiting a few bars etc but mostly it was our choice
I went three times and its still not enough! Now I am past their age requirements and have to crack on to Trafalgar Tours ladies instead (not the same caliber I lament).
As for taking you to the shops, yes it happens, in true ozbargain style, just take the samples and go back to chasing the 'Green Lights'.
Pretty cheap flights to London/Europe but dates only go to May 13 , we aren't going to August/September and most airlines only allow bookings for about 350 days ahead.
Then just hold your wallet, there will be plenty more sales in the next 9 months!
At first I thought you might be implying that people get pregnant on the Contiki tour and have a lot of baby stuff to buy in the next 9 months LOLOLOL.
Yeh for sure just keen haha. Tickets for the latest booking date are like 2200 return but it does cost extra to book that far in advance. Hopefully I'll get some cheap flights that I see advertised on ozbargain 1000$ would be nice haha
