What is Nano IPS? It just sounds like marketing BS

    • +4
      • I suppose so, not a bad price given the cost. Even if it were a normal IPS monitor, this seems to have good specs.

      • +16

Displayninja is a click farming website that has no original content or testing. It repeats marketing material and specifications (like in this case) and steals reviews.

So answering "It just sounds like marketing BS" with repackaged marketing BS isn't useful.

TFTcentral, RTings and HardwareUnboxed do actual measurements of this monitor which ignores how many words they put into their marketing materials.

        • They asked about Nano IPS and that site gave an answer what Nano IPS.

I didn't read into the question thinking that the website was going to be the bees knees to let the OP know what the response time, GtG, contrast ratio, viewing angles, refresh rates etc.

Your point is correct that for those types of reviews those sites you listed are really good to start off with and listening to Tim explain technical details of monitors is great for people learning about monitors or looking to buy one.

    • +3

It is just LG's IPS panel basically, so yeah, mostly marketing. Note this same panel is also used in non-LG monitors such as the Gigabyte M27Q-P (which relative to the LG comes with some extra features like the inbuilt KVM switch), yet Gigabyte either can't or won't bother with the NanoIPS marketing. That's somewhat telling I suppose, it's ultimately just a proprietary name for a pretty standard product.

That said, it doesn't detract from the quality of the monitor either. It's a good all-round gaming panel, however it's known for being on the low side in terms of contrast, even when just comparing to other high-refresh IPS panels. This is clear from both reviews with proper measured values but is also something LG freely acknowledge by publishing lower contrast figures on their spec sheets.

That one weakness probably prevents it from being a clear-cut best choice, but it's still an excellent one at this price point. It just needs to be acknowledged that there are various trade-offs between these and its competitors.

    • Nah, no IPS.

    • All these downvotes but it seems like people agree it is marketing BS

  • +4

Very decent monitor for the price. Reviews seen here: 1 , 2 , 3

Just a heads up that there are lots of reports of the monitor disconnecting every time it enters sleep mode

    • +1

I can vouch for the disconnecting in sleep mode, causes my AMD drivers stutter the applications moving on the screen upon it waking up. Simple fix is to turn the monitor off and on again (classic).

      • +4

I just swapped the DP cable from the one provided in the box to one I bought elsewhere, and there is no longer any disconnecting going on. Literally fixed my problem haha, give it a go I hope it helps you as well!

        • +3

My Samsung had a similar issue with the HDMI cable they gave me, don't rule out the cables, guys!

          • @AreYouAWiiizard: Cables would be normally one of the first things I'd check, but with how widespread this issue was (and the same issue being fixed by firmware in a similar model) made it appear to be straight up a monitor thing. It may still be, but yeah, could also just be a trash cable that they supplied. Which explains why it is so widespread haha

    • I have not experienced this issue… using the out of the box displayport cable. Are there any steps I could follow to replicate it? been pretty happy with the 3 LG panels I have used

      • What's occurring, at least from a first pass at the reports, is that the screen is telling the PC either to disconnect it, or that the screen itself is disconnecting. It reconnects when the screen would ordinarily wake up (although it doesn't do this cleanly with all users).

The result is that, if you are using multiple monitors - especially ones which don't have this behaviour - then all of your windows would rearrange away from the 27GP850 onto the other monitor. Windows 11 tries to remember where things were and arranges most things back over once this monitor also reawakens + reconnects. Using a single monitor, or multiple with the same issue, you'd likely not notice anything at all.

Some say it is a bad DP cable they supplied, some say they implement the DP standard incorrectly. It seems to be a noted issue that they fixed with 27GN950 by adding in an option with the firmware eventually. Nothing so far on this screen, though, and plenty of reports.

        • I just changed out my DP cable to another one I bought from an OzB deal. Works as expected now, and no sleep / disconnect issues.

        • Using the default DP cable and haven't had this happen yet. Second monitor is a Benq via hdmi.

  • 32 inch is pretty cheap too… Is that too big for a desk? I currently use a 27 inch and it feels pretty good.

    • +3

Too big for gaming for me, looking to downsize to 27”

      • +2

I have 34" ultra wide and I think I would like to downgrade to 27" QHD too. 34" is putting too much strain on my eyes and the monitor is at a pretty far distance, could be just me though.

But soon to downgrade to an OLED 27" QHD even FHD if I find a good deal.

        • +1

I did the same thing. 27 inch is the sweet spot for desktop gaming.

        • This or Gigabyte M27Q?

          • +2

@lothus777: This can be a bit confusing because there are two versions of the M27Q, and that's not considering variant models like the M27Q-P and M27Q-X.

It's not always clear based on store listings which version they're selling. The telltale sign is probably to look at the Colour Saturation spec, which is 92% for Rev 1.0 and 95% for Rev 2.0. Harder to spot is that the Rev 1.0 has a 170Hz refresh rate, whereas the Rev 2.0 is sold as 165Hz with a 170Hz overclock mode (but a store might cynically put the 170Hz on the product listing anyway).

Now ignoring the minor differences in spec, they are very different monitors. Rev 1.0 is a fascinating product, using a panel made by Sharp with the sub-pixels arranged in a non-standard BGR arrangement. This notoriously causes some issues with Windows font rendering, with some people complaining that it causes them to look a little jaggy. However it's a very subtle effect that some people say they don't notice at all.

Rev 2.0 on the other hand is very much a "standard" monitor like the LG but with the bonus of the KVM switch still present. It's very similar to the M27Q-P (which is basically the LG) but with slightly lower specs (not sure who manufactures the actual panel)

I've checked a couple random stores - Scorptec and Mwave, and both seem to list the Rev 1.0 specs. Overall I would probably say the 1.0 has the edge in gaming and movies, but the LG has the edge in general desktop use. The M27Q Rev 2.0 is sort of pointless in that you may as well buy the LG or the M27Q-P.

            • @mystarey: Thanks! Looking to downgrade to 27", what would be the best 1440p monitor for gaming? 144hz+ budget around $500

              • +5

@lothus777: So this LG GP850, if we're doing silly car analogies, is like the Toyota Corolla of gaming monitors. Sells like hot-cakes, has been reviewed by everyone and their dog, and its strengths and weaknesses are well established. It's the "safe" choice, but doesn't stand out in any one area.

Looking at its competitors, I would also consider the following:

                • ViewSonic VX2728J-2K, a fairly new model, but has received a glowing review from the very reputable PCmonitors.info, though the other major review sites (rtings, TFTcentral, Hardware Unboxed) haven't gotten around to it. 180Hz is an incremental upgrade versus the older models in this segment, but pricing is very impressive at around $350, which I feel finally obsoletes the old "everyday low price" champion that was the Gigabyte G27Q.

                • MSI G274QPF-QD. This is a downgraded version of the MSI MAG274QRF-QD which is probably the best 27" IPS gaming monitor but which blows your budget. How much of a downgrade? A bit early to tell perhaps, but the -QD quantum dots are the main selling point here and they're still present, so probably the model with highest potential here. EDIT: Actually I see Hardware Unboxed has reviewed this. I have not seen the review and can't watch a video review right now, but do have a look at it and decide whether the QD party trick sounds attractive to you.

                • Gigabyte M27Q Rev 1.0, which as discussed above probably has an edge in terms of gaming over the LG, especially if you play games with lots of dark scenes. But it's risky in that you might end up disliking how it looks on the Windows desktop.

Personally I would get the ViewSonic for its current special price of $349 which is extremely hard to say no to. Just be careful on the model name, VX2728J-2K. There's a non-2K version which is only 1080p, and a non-J version which is strictly worse.

However my personal context is that I feel that for me, this is the last hurrah of IPS monitors, and my next monitor is almost certainly going to be either OLED or whatever other tech comes next. That is, I don't feel any IPS monitor today is going to be a long-term decision, which is why I'm reluctant to recommend spending $600-700 on the MAG274QRF-QD despite it being probably the best monitor in this market segment.

                • @mystarey: Perfectly said.

                • @mystarey: @mystarey
are you saying that the VX2728J-2K is better performing than the OP?

                  • +1

@lordra: There's no clear-cut answer to be honest, and as such there's probably not much more I can say for now because we're limited by the amount of credible reviews for each monitor. It's not like other bits of PC hardware where every publication reviews everything, and that's before considering that many monitor models have very limited international distribution. The Viewsonic and MSI are new models this year, there's likely still a bit to be learned about them. The LG and the Gigabyte are over two years old now though, and as such are very much known quantities but they're getting a bit old and competitors have caught up to them since they originally released.

In terms of refresh, we can disregard the overclocked 180Hz mode for both and count them as 165Hz. In terms of contrast, yes, but then basically any non-LG IPS monitor will beat the LG for contrast. In terms of ergonomics, the Viewsonic has a small edge with better range of height adjustment and a swivel feature that LG lacks entirely. In terms of extra features, the LG does add a USB hub which the Viewsonic lacks, but on the other hand, the Viewsonic has some basic tinny speakers where the LG has nothing. The MSI for its part also has the superior argonomics and also has a USB-C input.

In the end, the ViewSonic's trump card is probably simply its price advantage for what can be considered an extremely similar product. $70 at this end of the market is a big difference, you'd have to pay 20% more from the LG which is not a clearly superior monitor, and can probably reasonably be called a sidegrade at best (and now it's on backorder anyway). And if you are prepared to spend the extra money, the MSI G274QPF-QD for $10 more than the LG is tempting for its superior contrast and colour gamut to the LG.

(Just doing a quick price check for the MAG274QRF-QD and it's sitting at $629. Still too much for my blood, but if you think you'll be keeping it for several years with no upgrade-itis, then I can see the appeal in just skipping the tradeoffs of all the other models and simply going for the best)

                    • @mystarey: Thanks for that.
I see Mwave has it for $349. No one else seems to have it though. Is that because it's so new? Wondering about after sales support. $359 with shipping. Or a 30 minute round trip under ideal traffic conditions.
This will primarily be used for office work for the OH. Gaming, not so much. Because I have the Dell for gaming.

                      • +1

@lordra: I'm seeing the same price at Scorptec, JW, Centrecom, Umart and MSY.

              • @lothus777: I'm selling a 27gl850-B on Facebook for $200 hehe

        • +2

          Damn, I went from a 27" > 34" ultrawide and I don't know if I could ever go back.

Granted I got one with a pretty extreme curve (1000R) so maybe it helps alleviate the eyestrain a flat one would cause.

          • @dqtl74: Same I've got 2 x 34 inch and its heaven for me.

Just picked up the 2 x 27 for the wife for work, non gamer but kiddo will use it I'm sure.

          • @dqtl74: I have the Xiaomi 34 Ultra wide curved one and it's a great monitor don't get me wrong, but I feel it's not that great for gaming (The size aspect of it), sooo much to look at going left and right. I don't mind it but I feel like a smaller 32" non ultra wide or 27" monitor would be better.

Maybe I'll keep the 34" and mount it above the 27" if I do get one. Who knows. Will have to see how my wallet is doing around Christmas time lol

    • +2

27" sweet spot for QHD apparently. There is math to back it up I just don't know it - same goes for all you watching 4k TV, if you sit too far away you are downgrading your experience from 4k to less cause your not able to see the detail.

    • +1

The difference is massive. I switched from 27inch to 32inch but had to go back because it was just too big for my taste. Go in store to actually get the feeling ofthe size before you commit.

      • That's weird cause I went from 27 to 32 and I'm loving the bigger screen size

    • Yeah it's too big. 27" is the sweet spot I reckon

  • +3

Looks as though the new Dell G2724D is rated higher and is cheaper when on sale (can also online chat Dell sales to get it very close to this price). Less features but better ergonomics and panel.

    • I was also looking at that one but the new Dell G2724D seems to be a budget version of S2721DGF. 8bit vs 10bit colour space. USB hub.

      • Looking at the rtings comparison they both have 10bit colour depth. Agree it has less features (e.g. USB hub) making it a "budget version" though it is a better monitor in every other way.

        • Dell website shows that spec forG2724D is only 16.7m colours instead of 1.07b for 10bit

          • @j0235: Good pick up, rtings must have missed it. Though 10bit not all that important for SDR and most people say to turn HDR off for these cheap monitors, makes the picture look worse 90% of the time. So probably not really a point of difference in this case.

  • +3

This monitor is the best gaming monitor I have ever used.
There is zero ghosting and almost zero motion blur @ 165-180hz.
    Absolute bargain.

    • I bought the 32 inch one today for $474

      • From?

  • +1

Excellent monitor. Bought this before at 600. Absolute best

  • Considering pulling the trigger but I wonder if it would be overkill, my ageing PC has a GTX 1050ti, any thoughts on if it would be worth it? Would it run ok? I'm a bit out of the loop these days.

    • +2

You'll be absolutely struggling to achieve playable framerates at the native resolution. It'll likely be significantly better for browsing and office work, but the GPU will struggle with most games made in the last 10 years or so

      • +1

Perfect for my 200 game backlog of 10+ yr old games in steam then!

    • I upgraded my 1650ti (4gb VRAM) laptop with a $300 Samsung 27" 1440p monitor, and it plays my usual 5-10 year old games fine on medium-high settings usually 60-80fps.

Was worth the upgrade for me, more screen space too

    • It's interesting… there is a newer version of this panel… but it performs worse. I think it comes down to when you plan to upgrade and what sort of shrinkflation the future might hold… very solid monitor! But if you upgrade in a decades time, 8K displays will probably be affordable…

  • +1

Will this monitor make me a pro gamer?

    • Highly doubt it. I play on my s95b oled and this and I do exactly the same

  • I have two of these now after working out if i should get a 32 to go with the 27 for some time.

    Excellent monitors.

  • Just got the 32” at OW

    Pricebeat to $497

  • Diji makes mention of this for $399 at Centrecon

    • +1

27GP850 is the old version but still better compared to the new version 27GR75Q. 10bit vs 8bit. 400nits vs 300nits

      • Gotcha.
So 27GP850 is this post, older model, but better buy.
        Good to know, thanks!

  • Got the 32" version. Safe to say I can never go back to anything 24" and below. As far as picture density my eyes could barely tell the difference anyway but the refresh rate and no stutters were definitely big pluses for me.

  • How would I connect my laptop to this monitor with Usb-C? I'm assuming I wouldn't be able to get power delivery from it?

    • You’ll need a USB-C monitor for that.

    • Verify that the USB-C port on your laptop supports DisplayPort Alt mode (most modern laptops would have 1-2 of their ports capable of this) and if it does, all you would need is a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

The DisplayPort on the monitor is a bog-standard full-size DP1.4 port, definitely no PD.

  • This or Dell G2724D? Dell supports VRR with PS5 but LG has better refresh rate and bette colour. I'd use this monitor for both home office work and PS5 gaming.

    • Probably the Dell if you'd be using it with the PS5 as well

    • Pretty sure PS5 maxes out at 120Hz on 1080p and 60Hz on 4K anyway. So the extra refresh rate probably not important, the better colour is debatable as both monitors have pretty bad HDR. I doubt 10bit vs 8bit would be noticeable. It's also recommended to use SDR anyway. The PS5 will benefit the most from the VRR so I'd say the Dell is the way to go.

      • Cheers. Just looked up LG doesn't have type c to DP cable in box. That's another ~20 bucks out of pocket for my macbook setup. So Dell wins after all.

      • -1

        PS5 does 120hz 4K with HDMI 2.1.

EDIT: ….which the Dell G2724D has.

        • I don’t think G2724D has HDMI 2.1. RTings says it only has 2.0.

Anyway 2.1 is an overkill for PS5 at this stage, given that few games run at 4K 120hz.

  • Bought two of these for my kids on last Amazon sale - these monitors are great.

  • Got it for $398.05 at Officeworks

  • Is this just a newer 27gl850? I have that now….no reason to upgrade?

    • I have the same screen, i wouldn't upgrade till hdr 600 at around this price.

    • no reason upgrading till OLED hits half the price.

    • I wouldn't upgrade. I have that to. But I wanted the 32 inch so I bought the gp850. Other then screen size I can't really tell a difference between the two.

  • Anyone comment about hdr quality for streaming?

    • +2

Most say to turn HDR off, looks worse than SDR in most cases.

  • Is there a way to get a price match from JB Hifi online, or do you have to go in to a shop?

    • +1

I price matched online. Just chat with them.

  • Just checked now, already out of stock. Sad…

    • +1

Still available to order at this price on pre-order.

  • +1

Price matched with officeworks 398.05 used Harvey Norman Price.

  • +1

I bought this 2 weeks ago for $429. Great monitor. Plan on using it with PS5 running 1440p 120Hz.

Tip - turn off the energy saving setting which is enabled by default. I thought there was something wrong with my monitor when I'd notice it occasionally adjust the contrast up/down by 1 randomly.

  • how compare this and 32inch same model?

  • Hardly Normal Link if you want to price beat.

  • +1

The crafty people at Office works has marked this as Out of Stock online and in stores.

    Link

    • Shows up as having stock right now, at least when I visit it. In fact, just ordered it. Thanks OP.

      • Update: got it this afternoon from the Officeworks order made yesterday. Looks great so far, Elden Rings is playing beautifully in 2k.

      • Yea odd when I went to get that link, it showed as oos.

I know what they were doing. They took it off line to price match it so they won't have to price beat it. Sly!

  • JB Hi-Fi for reference.
