Noob here, are these marathon tyres?

    • -1

      huh?

    • +2

If you are referring to Schwalbe Marathon that is a different brand and category of tire. These are more racing-focussed by comparison (less puncture protection but higher low rolling resistance).

      • +2

Thank you, like said noob here. The local bike shop told me to upgrade to marathon tyres to reduce number of punctures. Might wait for Schwalbe Marathon deal

        • All good, they usually run for about $50 each and longer lasting than these.

        • Depends where you are cycling how light your bike is. Those more puncture proof tyres (like gatorskins) will be a dull ride and heavier, depends if you care or not.

You can avoid most punctures by looking where you're going and keeping the correct pressure in them.

        • i run 35mm marathons and no punctures since putting them on. highly recommend them, they roll pretty good too for their weight

        • I've used maxxis refuse in various sizes and they've all been good for commuting to Sydney cbd. Only punctures have been embedded nails and screws

      • +1

        higher low rolling resistance

        as in "lower" ???

        • Lower rolling resistance.

PS have bought these (in 25mm) before from Amazon US. The website description said 4 pack 700x25c, but in the seller's description it is written as Continental Grand Prix 5000 Black-BW+Black Chili 700X25 Set of 2 Tires. I think I only got sent a 2pk for A$145.54 but Amazon gave me a US$50 partial refund.. Amazon service pretty good.

  • Great tyres, run the 28s on my Defy.

  • +2

They are $74.99 at bikebug so not all au sellers are ~$80. Free delivery if you get 2.

    • Bike bug good, never buy stuff at wiggle anymore.

      • I read wiggle is going under

        • yep, looks like it sadly

      • Wiggle and CRC still have good deals sometimes. Bought some DA brake calipers 2 months ago for almost half the price of BB or anywhere else in aus.

        • Yes no doubt, just don't think it's as good or cheap as it was originally, and the dwindling AUD etc
Used to take a fair while to turn up. Just saying good buying locally if BB does have it (and they seem to 'follow' online pricing from Wiggle etc for a lot of items. Bonus when you can go to a physical store in your country too.

Edit: $70 each seems to be the most you should pay for these.

          • @G-rig: My order came in 4 days because shimano products are meant to come from shimano aus which mine did.
No way i am paying almost double just to support a LBS.

PBK used to have these tyres for about $120-130 for a twin pack IIRC during covid.

            • @8azinga: That's good, agree, have to find the best price.
LBS good for certain things and there when you need them.

        • +2

I'd pull the brakes on Wiggle and CRC for now https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/wigglecrc-stops-paying-supp…

          • @y2k: Oh boy! Good heads up! Wow, that's pretty big. Wiggle was the go-to cycling store back in the 2010s, with free shipping on heaps of stuff.. and chain reaction bought out in 2016 to form wiggle CRC. Lots of mismanagement I guess?!

          • @y2k: I wouldnt be too concerned yet. They should still be selling and sending orders for some time to get rid of stock and get as much money as they can from what they have. Sounded like they have just cancelled orders from suppliers and arent taking in new stock. We might even see some very good deals coming soon.

    • Use "Welcome10" to get $10 off (I think it's $80 minimum spend).

Worked on an existing account of mine.

  • When I was down in Lorne (VIC) for Amy's Gran Fondo this year, I stumbled across a shop selling two for $140. Only 700x28c but both standard and tanwall available.

The shop was very busy as there were lots of fellow cyclists in town.

    • Is tan wall softer or just a different colour?

      • All for show mate, and probably get more punctures.

Any deals on the new All Season model?

    • +1
      • +1

That’s the 4 Season, there’s a new GP5000 All Season that is a hybrid of the 4 Season and 5000 so same great rolling resistance but higher puncture protection.

        • +2

Didn't know that. Thanks for the news!

          • @michaelxv333: No worries! It came out this year and is reviewed very well. Just at over $100/tire is a bit pricey at the moment.

Was waiting for a deal :-)

            • @JSONBourne: Wait for Black Friday deals on Bikebug/Pushys. I'm also keen to tryout Michelin power cups - reviews say they're even better than GP 5k.

              • @michaelxv333: Rolling resistant tests rate the Michelin Power Cups slightly better but there have been some reports of delamination of tread. Also very expensive at bikebug. I paid $120/pair from PBK when they had them.

                • @8azinga: 2 for $120 is a steal! Any difference on saddle between the power cup and gp 5k? Riding Conti for almost three years now would love to switch things around.

                  • @michaelxv333: A change is as good as a holiday eh?

GP4000 and GP5000 are a no brainer, solid go to. I find they last quite well too.
