    • +1

JB hifj sold out Apple gc for a while

      • Anyone been able to get the Apple GC from JB Hi-fi lately? I've tried a few city stores but obviously OOS.

        • +1

The Bondi Junction JB Hi-Fi has stacks of them at the register as of this morning.

          • @tinabelcher: only $20 and allowed 5 per customer

@shane23: There was a bay full of $20-$200 denominations there just after 10am ¯_(ツ)_/¯

              • @tinabelcher: they don't sell variable cards. And still a limit of 5.

        • +1

My local JB has hundreds of apple gc, they have a limit of $500 per transaction.

        • +1

A friend of mine was able to exchange JB hi-fi Gift card for multiple $100 denominations of Apple GCs at JB HiFi DFO South Wharf yesterday. Perhaps give it a shot there. Cheers

Not sure where you are but JB Hifi Bankstown, NSW has plenty $20-$50, max $1000 per customer.

        • Thanks everyone! I went to a non-city location and there were plenty available, denominations from $20 all the way to $200

        • What's the conversion process.. Just pay for apple gc with these ultimate ones at counter (physical cards) or do I have to add to wallet?

          • +1

@PaKoRa: As far as I know, with the physical cards, you can't add them to your digital wallet - you would need to manually swipe them at the counter.

            • @SomeBooy: Thanks, you can add to wallet the default expiry date for physical cards is 12/29 for when adding to wallet. Just did one ultimate home to test.

              • @PaKoRa: That is only true for Ultimate (Visa) gift cards in the older style of packaging (i.e. the gift card on the right in this image).

If you have an Ultimate (Visa) gift card in the new style of packaging (i.e. the gift card on the left in this image), that uses a completely different expiry date, but you can find that expiry date on the packaging. I have seen such Ultimate (Visa) gift cards already for sale at Coles last week.

Also, I did see an Ultimate (eftpos) gift card for sale at one Coles earlier this week. That one cannot be added to a mobile wallet.

I thought this was posted in the most recent Vanilla Visa deal for VIC/TAS from a month or two back. I might be misremembering - I'm on mobile right now and I find it a bit of a pain to hunt comments but I'll go check when I'm next at a computer.

not that im aware off… the last two were 10% $250 Coles Master Card Digital Gift Cards were on16/08/2023 and 31/05/2023

So pure guess maybe, every 3 months? who knows.

I think they do this when Coles needs cash flow, so if they miscalculate their expected earnings and BAS etc, and they need cash flow then they can do this and they get a few million in a couple of days. They probably also know how many people spend right away, how many spend within 12months and how many people spend over 12months and how much never gets spent.

        • +1

I've been trying to wrap my head around the reason for this promo. Surely an ASX blue chip company would have some industrial grade overdraft product for this sort of thing.

  • What is the largest denomination that coles has? Cheers.

    • -4

Depends which suburb, some it's Christians, others it's Muslims, others still mainly Atheists or Vegans

    • +10

It depends on the Ultimate gift card you are interested in, as denominations vary from card type to card type.

Btw, this is based on what I have seen multiple Coles stores recently, so stock will vary from store to store, plus I may have not seen a particular denomination that may have started being sold at Coles recently. I have also ignored the variable load denomination, as that is excluded from this deal.

      • Active & Wellness: $100
      • Beauty & Spa: I have never seen this stocked at Coles.
      • Eats: $50
      • Everyone: $50
      • Gaming & Bites: $50

      • Him: $100
      • Home: $100

      • Students: $50
      • Style/Shopping: $100
      • Teens: $50
      • Thank You: $100
      • Thanks: $50

(The inclusion of Thank You and Thanks is not a typo. For some reason, Blackhawk Network thinks it is a brilliant idea to sell two gift cards at the same time with extremely similar names.)

      • +1

        Awesome thanks WookieMonster!

        • No worries.

Btw, slight amendment to my previous comment: I spotted a $100 Ultimate Beauty & Spa gift card at Coles this morning, so it looks like Coles is now actually selling that too.

    • I think if you use these at Ikea, you will have to convert them into an IKEA Giftcard via the Ultimate Gift Cards portal.

Do you think Coles will have 10% of the Coles MC gc soon? We haven't had one in WA for a while

          • @trixieb: I couldn't tell you. I was expecting one on 18 October given that they tend to closely follow the patterns of previous years. Who knows whether that was because they're done with these offers or if they're just planning to run one later in the year. One thing I will say, though, is that Coles seems very happy to snub WA/SA/QLD/NT with the Mastercard and Visa offers so even if they do run another one soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see those states and territories excluded again.

            • @VantageXL: Thanks. Perhaps sales of the gc are not good enough in the excluded states/territory

Shopfully usually publishes the upcoming Coles catalogue at 12:00am Sydney/Melbourne time on Mondays, so you can read the upcoming Coles catalogue right now if you are interested.

It does not completely answer your question though, because Free Points evidently found out about this deal before today.

  • I have a question, why many people swap these gift cards to Apple gift cards instead buying Apple device form JB or OW?

    • +10

      Some potential explanations:

      • Not everyone is actually converting Ultimate gift cards into Apple gift cards with the intent of purchasing a brand new Apple device. When I last used Ultimate gift cards to purchase Apple gift cards at JB Hi-Fi back in June 2023, it was to pay for a device repair at an Apple Store.

      • If an Apple device is in high demand and short supply, Apple Stores typically restock more frequently and faster than Apple Authorised Resellers (e.g. JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks). I went on a wild goose chase in late 2020 trying to get my hands on an iPad 8, and I found that Apple Stores released a limited amount of stock for click and collect every few days (particularly in the lead-up to Christmas), whereas I would have needed to wait an extra month if I opted to go with JB Hi-Fi.

      • It is more difficult to access education pricing at JB Hi-Fi or Officeworks when compared with Apple. At JB Hi-Fi, if you want to access education pricing when making a purchase instore, you have to show evidence you are eligible (e.g. university ID). I do not even know whether Officeworks allows education pricing at all. On the other hand, the rules around accessing the Apple Education Store is more relaxed, plus Apple gift cards are permitted as a payment method.

      • It is basically impossible to access AOC (Apple On Campus) pricing or EPP pricing at JB Hi-Fi or Officeworks, as Apple’s AOC or EPP portals is intended to be restricted to specific organisations (e.g. staff/students at specific universities, staff at specific companies, members of specific unions). Again, Apple gift cards are permitted as a payment method on Apple’s AOC and EPP portals.

      • You can earn cashback on most purchases of Apple devices on Apple’s Online Store (including the Apple Education Store) if you enter via Cashrewards or Shopback, even if you use Apple gift cards as a payment method.

      • +1

        Wow, so much thanks WookieMonster!

      • One reason to use Ultimate GCs at OW instead of converting to Apple GCs is the ability to combine Ultimate Gift Cards with flybuys dollars to buy an Apple device. Handy if you accumulate flybuys points to subsidise your purchase.

    • OOS

  • Limit 5 Gift Cards per customer.

How do they enforce the maximum 5 per customer? Or is it really 5 per transaction? If you use FlyBuys I guess they can enforce it?

    • +2

The maximum number of gift cards you can purchase in one transaction at Coles is 5. If you try to exceed this limit, you will get an error message on the checkout.

You could try to get around the 5 gift card limit by splitting your purchase of gift cards across multiple transactions. For this deal, the only thing that would stop you from doing this is the Coles staff at the store you are at. Pretty much every Coles store I have been to has a sign somewhere in the store saying A purchase limit of 5 gift cards per customer applies (as seen at the top of this photo), and considering all purchases of gift cards requires staff approval, there is a good chance that you will not be allowed to do back-to-back purchases of 5 gift cards per transaction if staff realise you are doing this (and care enough to stop you).

For this deal, there is no purchase restrictions applied based on Flybuys numbers or card numbers.

  • Hey guys,

I am a noob and new to these discounted ultimate gift cards, good timing too since an stove top is for sale at the good guys.

I see we can't do variable loads, so I assume to buy my $1749 item from the good guys, I need 3 x 500 and 1 x 250?

My questions: I cannot find it in the T&Cs (https://www.ultimategiftcards.com.au/terms-conditions/)

1 - Is there an activation fee to activate the card?
2 - Is there a processing fee when paying with the card?

    • +8

I see we can't do variable loads, so I assume to buy my $1749 item from the good guys, I need 3 x 500 and 1 x 250?

No. The maximum denomination on sale through this deal is $100, so it is not possible to purchase a $500 gift card through this deal. That means you need a minimum of 18 gift cards to pay for your stove top. TGG's instore checkouts can handle this.

If you choose to pay using 18 (or more) gift cards in one instore transaction, here are some tips:

      • Remove the gift cards from the packaging before you get to the store. The last thing you want is to remove gift cards from its packaging at the checkout, as that may slow things down (and annoy the staff member in the process). If you really to speed things up at the store even more, I would also suggest scratching the panel over the PIN before you get to the store. If you end up getting the newer Ultimate gift cards made of cardboard, do not try to peel off the sticker over the PIN, as you may accidentally destroy the PIN printed on the gift card in the process (which is definitely not a good thing).

      • Make sure you are clear in wanting to do split payments across multiple Visa cards, and be prepared to tell the staff member the available balance on each card. TGG’s checkouts cannot see the available balance of a Visa card when you present it on the EFTPOS terminal; the checkout will only know whether a payment request is approved or declined by Blackhawk Network (the gift card issuer).

      • Try to go to a TGG at a less busy time if you can. Redeeming 18 (or more) Ultimate gift cards can take a few minutes, which means you effectively shut down a checkout and tie up a staff member for that period of time. Again, if that happened during a busy period where there is limited staff around, you may annoy staff.

Btw, it will be practically impossible to use the Ultimate gift cards in this deal to pay for the stove top on the TGG online store. If you see the stove top cheaper on TGG Commercial, you will need to have the TGG Commercial order sent to a TGG store and then pay for it there.

Is there an activation fee to activate the card?

      No.

Is there a processing fee when paying with the card?

      I would not expect so.

It is only legal to charge a processing fee on the redemption of a gift card in Australia in a limited number of circumstances (e.g. transactions deemed to be international transactions, any surcharges applied by the merchant). I have redeemed Ultimate gift cards at TGG a few times in the past and have never been charged any processing fees, and I would be extremely surprised if you were charged such fees.

      • +1

Thank you for your reply, very helpful

Oh damn $100 max, guess coles should have 18 cards in stock for me to get and also getting around the 5 per transaction per customer policy if staff cared :(

  • ultimate gift card newbie here, can I redeem them online at jb hifi?

  • May I know how Ultimate giftcard can be swapped for Kogan giftcard? Thanks.

  • Does anyone know if one can use Afterpay Plus Card to buy these?

  • Can multiple Ultimate Gift Cards exchange into a combined gift card for an accepted retailer? E.g. exchange 5x $100 Ultimate Gift Card for a $500 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card?

    • Possible if allowed. better stay as ultimate so can use for more shops.

  • Does anyone know how many gift cards you can use per transaction on ASOS? I tried to ask chat but they said only one promo code plus one gift card is this correct?

  • I just tried buying 5 x $100 ultimate ‘home’ and the staff at Coles said $100 ones are not part of the 10% deal. Is that right?

    • Doesn't seem correct, I assume the offer applies to all variations? In any case the 'Home' one is literally pictured in the promo!

      • +1

The Coles we went to said only the pictured denominations are part of 10% deal i.e. $50. They refused to sell $100 gift card.

We went to another Coles and were able to buy $100 gift cards.

  • Can ony confirm Kogan gift card is on the ultimate Him?

  • Can I load these on to my Apple Wallet and use to purchase $100 Apple gift cards?
Also do Apple limit how many gift cards you can use at their online store?

  • Did anyone else's gift cards fail to activate upon purchase (at self serve checkout)? Just got home and punched card PCN in to confirm balance and it said it "Failed to activate. Please try again."

Anyone know what I need to do?

    • +1

The first question is whether the request to activate the gift card was approved or declined at the Coles checkout. There are two ways to determine whether this happened:

      1. After you finalised payment, the EFTPOS terminal should have showed whether the request to activate was APPROVED or DECLINED.1

      2. On the purchase receipt, the section that tells you the information about the gift card being sold will list either APPROVED (00) or DECLINED (xx) on the last row of information, underneath 3RD PARTY GIFT CARD.

If the request to activate was DECLINED, it means that you have been sold an unactivated gift card. The correct process would be to go to the service desk at the store that sold you the gift card to have the amount you have spent refunded to you. If you get resistance from staff at the service desk, call up the Coles Customer Care team and explain the situation; they will likely contact the store and direct them to process a refund for you. I am not sure whether Blackhawk Network can activate the gift card from their end.

If the request to activate was APPROVED, you should see whether you can check the gift card balance at Blackhawk Network’s alternative website for checking balances.2 If you get error messages on this website, I would suggest waiting a little longer to see whether the gift cards activate correctly, as activation is not always actually instant at the checkout. If that does not work, consider reaching out to Blackhawk Network for assistance.

      1. In my experience, if it was DECLINED, it should have triggered an error message on the main checkout screen saying the request was declined and would have needed a staff member to clear the error. However, there is a chance that not all Coles checkouts are programmed to do this.

      2. This alternative website can be found if you go to the Activ Visa gift card or Restaurant Choice gift card websites.

      • +3

        Thank you @WookieMonster! Very helpful

edit: it's pretty dumb but if there is no expiry on your card you should use expiry 12/29 to check the balance. Even though it should actually expire in 2026!

        • +1

It's not actually dumb when you think about it.

The expiry date for a physical Visa card needs to be set on the magstripe when the gift card is manufactured, as that is a piece of information Visa needs in order for a Visa card to be used in its network. The expiry date on the magstripe is something that cannot be changed by Blackhawk Network through the checkout activation process at Coles, because the only way your gift card interacts with the Coles checkout is scanning an activation barcode.

The balance for the gift card you purchased today will expire three years from the date of issue, so your gift card will still effectively expire in October 2026.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks Wookie, that seems to make more sense. However still very confusing for those who are trying to check the balance via the alternative website or add the card to their google wallet. I had to search a good 40 minutes before I found the small section it says to use the 12/29 expiry.

Either way, hope this helps others who run into the same problem.
