what's the best way of using Qantas points then?
For me, it's upgrading an economy flight to business.
Upgrades are worse than finding a business ticket in the first place (I get you might not always get such a luxury) - they price the upgrade almost the same as an outright business redemption - so its as though they've ignored the fact you've already paid for an economy ticket
Works well when work pays for your economy flight.
@ninnypoop: This is exactly my situation. Work books flex economy and I then upgrade. Always appreciated on the trips to Perth in the A330 or international flights.

International business or first class reward seats but in general you need to be massively flexible, book really early (or really late), and spend a lot of time searching regularly with different combinations of flights to get to your destination.
This is actually pretty good, about 1.2c value. Since you can book any flight then you can pick off cheap dates/flights and pick up a good deal.
Of course reward flights can be better value but if you factor in the extreme flexibility required and compare to buying cash flights with the same level of flexibility, plus the huge amount of your time required, realistically you're not getting a huge amount more value on reward flights. Plus you'll collect some points and status credits like this.
Not a bad use at all if you have a bunch of points sitting around and don't have the flexibility of travelling whenever you might get lucky enough to find a reward flight.
any destinations anyone found a reasonable bargain? the few i checked didnt have any premium economy seats
