TFTCentral review seemed to like it. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2713hm.htm

Example:

"One of the most pleasing changes is the move to a lighter AG coating, which should keep those bothered by aggressive, grainy AG coating on IPS panels happy."

"Black depth and contrast ratio were very good for an IPS panel and showed some marked improvements over the older U2711. Pixel responsiveness was also very good and again helped clear up most of the overshoot issues which affected the U2711 before it."

  • Does this look good in the flesh or is that silver stuff all plastic

    • Since when did 'plastic' become synonymous with 'bad looking'? Besides, all that 'silver stuff' is on the back and the backwards-facing bezel, you wouldn't even see it.

    • Yes it looks good in the flesh even though it consists of plastic material. How often would you see metal being used for the visual appearance of monitors anyway? From the top of my head, the answer is none & that includes tvs

  • wow, that's a bloody amazing deal.

I bought mine when they were last on sale here for $639 and that was the cheapest I had ever seen it.

    im waiting for a crazy 2412 deal, that way i'll have 1 x u2711 flanked by 2 x 2412.

You're thinking of the U2711 for $639, this is a new model which has curved borders, is 16:9 & doesn't have an SD slot or component inputs & the colour range isn't as good

The U2412M has been as low as ~$230 (I think?) but I got mine for the regular $279. Definitely worth every dollar though :)

  • So this is a good/great monitor for business use? I understand that with a lower resolution all the MS Windows icons and fonts would be too big for general PC use - Word, Excel, Outlook etc - but this hi-res 27" should work just like a 24" 1080p but with more real estate? I currently use a Dell 24" 1080p (cost $199 I think) and it does the job fine but more real estate may make the working day more productive. Should help with down time too.

Is it worth waiting for Dells 30" to drop or is that still looking like quite a way off?

    • Yes its a good monitor for business use although if you're a pro photographer I'd suggest the U2711. And this is pretty much like 1080p but with more real estate whilst covering roughly the same size for icons

This is what the resolution will look like in comparison:

  • Just bought one of this (thanks OP)… this will go great with my U2711 and my iMac 27 inch…

  • Damn! Impulse bought! Now I need a good video card to go with this…

    • Oh, do you need a particularly good PC to run this thing?

      • If you want to run games or other graphic-intensive applications in its high native resolution of 2560x1440 without a hiccup, you'd need a powerful video card. For everyday use, even watching movies, it's fine.

  • In July 2008 I bought a Dell 27" IPS monitor and my friend bought the newly released iPhone 3G. Both cost about the same and both used every day. The iPhone 3G stopped being used long ago. My Dell 27" is still going strong and still being used at least 8 hours every day.

I think I made the better purchase.

    • Whilst I agree the monitor was a better purchase, I'd hazard a guess that you don't exactly carry it around in your pocket all day, every day, and don't often drop it. Not exactly comparable products, when it comes to reliability.

I dunno, my lan monitor (ie a U2711) has been shipped all round the country side and still in good nick apart from a few minor marks etc.

Would have easily done 10,000km in the back seat of my car.

        • I would still argue that one would be more careful when transporting a monitor, as opposed to the normalcy of using a phone.

        • Perhaps, i just place it on the back seat, use the seat belt around the stand to hold it in place, dont use the box etc for it.

    • +1

They're both completely different things though :P You could make a similar comparison against anything that costed a similar amount. When people want stuff, they buy it rather than dwelling on which one will last longer & how often they'll use it coughs Women & shoes coughs

How are you going to bring back home a 27" monitor without wife finding out? Might want to share that in the forums? :)

      • +7

he just needs to hide the boxes and incoming package from the wife, after that the only reply to everything is "i've always had that".

getting it in the house is a simple commando operation, that's what first person shooter video games prepare you for.

        • @insular, you are master of cunningness!

        • +2

Totally misread that and was shocked by your knowledge of insular's skills…

  • I have a desktop with 55inch samsung @1080p - looks grainy but your eyes get used to it.
I also have a macbook pro retina @2880x1800 - looks so sharp I long ago gave up trying to find individual pixels

When will the god-dam TV resolution rise, sharp&samsung are both planning on making HD+ TV's. Korea are aiming for 2014 to have digital tv broadcasting super HD+ or watever, supposed more than double HD 2140p+

    • I know that LG and Samsung have just released (/announced) their 4K OLED TV's in Asia… for ~$25K. By all means, become an early adopter ;-)

  • Sweet deal! It will look nice coupled with my new GTX 680, thanks OP!

  • thanks op for another impulsive buy :)
    just kidding
