TFTCentral review seemed to like it. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2713hm.htm

Example:

"One of the most pleasing changes is the move to a lighter AG coating, which should keep those bothered by aggressive, grainy AG coating on IPS panels happy."

"Black depth and contrast ratio were very good for an IPS panel and showed some marked improvements over the older U2711. Pixel responsiveness was also very good and again helped clear up most of the overshoot issues which affected the U2711 before it."

    Didn't know I needed a 27" monitor until now…thanks again OzBargain :(

      Three 27" monitors*

  • +4

For those who don't know: 2560x1440 are the good 27" monitors and are usually expensive. The cheap 27" monitors are only 1920x1080.

    • For cheap & nasty there are always those $350 Korean 2560x1400 27" IPS monitors on eBay. However I have to say that Dell UltraSharps are usually good quality at reasonable price.

      /me typing in front of a U2412M and a U1905 bought 7 years ago.

      • I upgraded from a U2711 to one of these "Cheap Korean monitors from eBay". (Specifically this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221068918740 ) and I can say with it's glass screen, it makes the U2711 look "cheap & nasty". I sold my U2711 for $570, and bought this one for ~ $314) If you make do with only DVI-D (Dual DVI) then don't bother with the U2711/3

Is it worth paying an additional ~$210 for a USB 3 hub, and extra ports?

If you want a 3 year warranty, DisplayPort, etc then this is a deal for this monitor.

        • +4

My experience was the opposite with the Shimian. It feels cheap barely ever works (spent far too much time taking it apart and trying to get it to work) half the buttons on the thing dont do anything. Ive probably used it for a few hours total its just so unreliable.

My dell U2711 is still going strong after a few years, I wouldnt recommend anything else and i dont use all the inputs or options but its handy that its there.

        • +1

Another + from me for those cheap and nasty korean monitors :-)
I got a crossover 27" for about $330AU delivered - one of the more expensive ones - has been perfect. No anti-reflective coating and as has been mentioned only DVI input.
We are quite limited in Aus for these resolutions - thought of getting the Dell but too many complaining about strong anti-ref coat. I also have 20" 1600x1200 dells, and on these the coating can be quite annoying.
Of course you may have problems, though most of the popular ebay sellers have good return policies.

        • +1

+1 the catleap, crap stand but bloody excellent screen i tell you

crossover and others got better stands i heard

        • @BhanuL, thanks for the heads up on the Catleap 27 inch.

        • +1

Bear in mind these catleaps etc, don't conform with the AU standard for electrical devices, so it can cause issues for warranty claims if an electrical fire starts.

      • Some people on Whirlpool swear by those 'cheap and nasty' Catleaps. I don't know myself, but apparently the quality is usually top-notch, and the customer service is excellent.

      • I have a dell U2711 and I really dislike the anti-glare coating on it so the cheap korean monitors would suit me better. I will be buying http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-ACHIEVA-Shimian-QH270-Lite-27… for $299US shipped (for use as a second monitor) - green-sum is a great ebayer buyer to buy from because they have a dead pixel policy as shown in that listing.

I'm sure it's a massive gamble but in my opinion worth it.

        • says can't use laptop with it.. yet my laptop's 6770 is listed as compatible.. so i guess i can't use a HDMI to dual-dvi converter?

        • Apparently the anti-glare coating isn't as harsh/dirty as it used to be on these new models

        • It's because they cheaped out and don't have any kind of signal converter/image processor in the LCD itself so you must drive it directly via dual link dvi at its native resolution. For some reason they say laptops don't work - not sure of the technical reason for this but it definitely wouldn't be worth the risk. There are similar lcds available on ebay that do have the signal processor on board but they cost significantly more and it would probably be worth going for the dell instead.

        • I read about that today - that's definitely a major positive over the u2711 for a lot of people then. I like anti-glare just not to the extend of the u2711.

    • There are degrees of "good" - this monitor is fine but is only 8-bit colour, whilst U2711 is 10-bit.

    • +1

I use my u2711 at 1920x1080. Its harder to read on 2560x1440 at a meters distance. :)

And also the my old monitor tilted(side wise) few degrees in a ~2yrs.

      • +1

If you had windows 7 installed you could just go into the display setting options and put the DPI to 125% or 150% .. and walla ! problem fixed plus you get to keep the sharpness of the native rez…

Now if your still stuck on windows XP .. LOL thats XP for you! .. <MOD: Language>

        • +1

I tried DPI to 125%. ONLY work for some applications, Does not seem to do anything on this Ozbargain website for example. Wished it can but customised as 125% just a little too much!

        • …most browsers have a function to set the minimum default font size which was designed specifically for your situation.

  • does anyone know if this is wall mountable? cheers.

    • +1

You can remove the stand and wall mount it with a VESA-compatible 100x100mm mounting kit.

    • According to US site's tech specs it has a VESA mount interface.

    • +1

I recently wall mounted my U2711 using http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/310303175658?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…

I have to say it's one of the most impressive mounts that I've used - super study and adjusts forward/back and side to side. Also for a 2 axis swivel it's pretty close to the wall. It's great - frees up so much desk space.

  • +1

    Doh, I just "Wasted" 279 on the U2312M… :(

    • -7

27" 2560x1440 is too big for most people on a desk.

      • +2

If anything, hirez 27" is too restrictive for me - would prefer 3072x1440 instead.

        • +1

I find 27" restrictive as well. I used to run 2x 24" 1980x1080. I miss the extra bits. Looking to go dual 27"s some time soon.

        • 7680x1440 or 17680x1600 (what i run currently) or go home.

        • Whilst i applaud your willingness to spend on 3 x 30" screens, personally i wouldn't need to have 3 screens.

          Different strokes for different folks.

I'd rather put it towards a set of re55 semi slicks (which lasts like 2 or 3 track days) or buy the new EF 200-400 f/4L II 1.4x when it releases (which i'm hoping will be soon).

So i'd rather go home :)

        • 2 x U2711 on a pole is heaven on a stick.

        • hmmm, eyefinity gaming…drools

        • eyefinity ewwww.

          Surround vision ftw.

        • +1 on the lens

      • Maybe back in 1995 when they were tube sized :P

  • Will there be a touchscreen version for windows 8?

    • Windows 8 does not require a touch screen. It works fine with a mouse. I imagine a trackpad with gesutres would be slightly more ideal.

      • most people are installing START8 on windows 8 and bringing back the start bar and auto load into desktop making windows 8 …. windows 7.5 .. its awesome

        • +1

I'm on Win 8 and the new start menu is fine, you set the icons you want in the main screen and all the rest you start typing and they come up. To be honest I don't use the new "start menu" that much as once you are on the desktop you don't need it.

        • You do not need the start menu, simply pin the apps you need (wherever you need).

    • +2

Why would you want fingerprints all over your lovely 27" monitor? I swear the price of microfiber cloths will go through the roof after W8 release.

    • You can always get one of those ext. usb touchscreen digitisers or IR sensor add-ons that can provide touch input, but they're still fairly expensive.

  • +1

Yep bought an Shimian 27" korean panel came in perfect condition, stand is brilliant.
Obviously not as good as ultrasharp but that can be changed with a VESA mount if your that fussy.
Also own an 24" Ultrasharp; really doesn't compare.

  • +2

Argh, gosh darn it. Hasn't even been a year since my last monitor upgrade (U2412m) on top of which mine is just a few weeks old after receiving a brand new warranty replacement. I'm so weak.

    • +1

That's technology for ya unfortunately. Once you bought something, before you even open the box it will have depreciated by 25-50% of cost price.

      • +1

I wonder what they call psychological depreciation.

November 2011: "Beautiful - this is perfect. Just like my 2209WA with that extra little bit of space I wanted. 27 inches would've been way too big!"

September 2012: "This feels kinda cramped. Wish I had more resolution and size."

    • +1

Id be happy to take that off your hands if your wanting to upgrade again. I am 1 U2412M away from my ideal 3 screen setup.

If anyone has a U2412M to sell & they live in Melbourne let me know!

      • For future ref I found a guy on ebay flogging the U2412M's for 300 delivered & he has a load of em

        • Don't they go for $279 delivered from Dell's regular sales?

        • Nah new they charge $399 although I did buy one from them refurbished at $279 that was in perfect condition
(that regular special price is just for refurbished I think)

  • Damn, looks like there is no card reader on the left side anymore. My ultrasharp 24", 27", and 30" all have that feature and is very handy for me.

    • This isn't an ultra sharp.

        • yeah .. I take it back .. Dell does call them an Ultrasharp. But it doesn't 'feel' like one to me.

        • My biggest beef is that they're 16:9. All Ultrasharps should be 16:10 damnit. Maybe they should create a new range called Ultrasharp Lite ahaha.

  • -4

8ms response time seems rather high for that price…

    • +2

i think that is due to the IPS. definitely still a great package

    • +1

You do know most companies publish G2G for lower response time right? Also there is no specific measurement method and ISO/IEEE/bla bla bla governing body towards response time. Some manufacturer skew the results to their favour.

But to the point. IPS panels don't usually have great response but there is a gaming mode in some which does kick up the response by sacrificing some quality.

  • +1

I am running a Dell 3011 and one of the 'cheap and nasty' Crossover 27"s, which I got for $334 delivered. Tbh the Dell's are obviously better quality stand and input wise but I actually quite like the lack of AG on the Korean panels. Good price for this 27".

  • +3

Oh it's U2713HM, not U2711. Should not have voted + so hastily.

    • +1

Ah I didn't realise this. Is it worth getting the U2711 over the U2713? I understand the U2711 has a wider colour gamut than the U2713…

      • +3

Short answer: If you don't know the names of the different colour gamuts or what they're used for then the U2713 will do you just fine.

Long answer (quoted from the review):

(referencing the U2711 colour space)…but you need to take into account whether this is practically useable and whether you're ever going to truly use that colour depth. You need to have a full 10-bit end to end workflow to take advantage of it which is still quite expensive to achieve and rare in the market, certainly for your average user.

I.e. unless you work in a colour demanding industry (e.g. print publishing) or can name the different gamuts/what they're used for, you don't need to worry about colour gamuts.

      • +3

The 2713 isn't without its own advantages:

        • USB 3.0 support.
        • Much lower power consumption (around 25W vs 60W at calibrated brightness).
        • Rotation (portrait view) support.
        • Less grainy/dirty anti-glare coating.
        • Improvements to "overdrive" (response time trickery).
        • Conventional OSD buttons.
        • About $100 cheaper (at sale prices).

    • +3

Umm did you read any of the above comments re: resolution?

    • +1

I can also say I got a 64inch Samsung monitor (Really its a TV), but its not the size its the image quality.

I have a 2711 (Love it), and also have two 2405s, and two of the very first Dell E172FP monitors (They cost me $2200ea at the time) All of them have been brilliant.

    • Actual, high-end Samsung monitors? Sure, they compare just fine; but TV's? No.

    • +3

Why do people insist on commenting on things they have zero idea about?

    • +2

      There's always one…

  • Beware of issues getting this screen to display higher than 1920x1200 if you're using HDMI. There's a long whirlpool thread on it with limited success reported.

  • -2

thats cause hdmi is only up to 1080p.

You need 2xdvi or displayport or thunderbolt for higher.

Im contemplating getting one of these and using my macbook instead of buying an imac

    • +3

Incorrect. 2560x1440 has been supported by HDMI since 1.3 and 1.4 supports upto 4K

    • Wrong. You only need 1 dvi as well. Ensure the DVI cable is dual link capable and the graphics card too.

      Oh… wait.. you use a mac… why am i not surprised. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMsLArefSOw

  • Awesome Deal!!! I've been waiting for a price drop! Thanks OZB!

  • Bit OT, but what's a good Dell monitor for 1080p gaming?

    • A Samsung one.

  • Much better deal in the outlet http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…
Old model 2711 for $659 with 2 years less warranty. But hurry there is only one available!

    /sarcasm

    • +2

The 2713 is not a replacement for the 2711 and is actually inferior in some aspects. One being the Adobe RGB gamut coverage.

  • +1

Mate! Everyone is rich around here….except me…. d:-(>

  • Just to confirm, will this monitor require a dual-dvi link to work at full spec OR will be fine on a single dvi link(on board intell hd3000)?

    • +1

It will display on a single link DVI, however the max resolution will be 1920x1200, for the full resolution you will need either a dual link DVI or Displayport or HDMI 1.4 (which the HD3000 does NOT have)

  • So, $283 and this is the difference in physical size right?
Higher pixel density, widescreen makes it worthwhile I guess.
    http://www.displaywars.com/comparisons/27-inch-16x9-vs-24-in…

    • It's all about pixel density for me - for work I need more screen realestate. I think the res is the whole point of monitors such as this - there's no way I'd pay this much for a 27" if it was only 1080 regardless of the quality of the panel/brand etc..

      • Yeah the higher pixel count allows more stuff to be done on a smaller area, windows open etc

        • You should probably mention that the side effect of taking advantage of a higher pixel count like that is that fonts and windows all become smaller.

        • Yeah, the 0.23mm pixel pitch vs the U2412M's 0.27mm is what I'm using to talk myself out of pulling the trigger on this deal.

Scaling as a workaround is well-implemented in some apps like web browsers but there are plenty of others for which support is clunky or non-existent.

  • I already have a u2711 on a display port cable. How do I plug in a second monitor to my second graphics card.. is that possible?

    • -1

You mean to your Alienware laptop?

  • +1

Argh! Would like to swap my recently purchased U2412M for this please :( Such a good price

    • Tell me about it… Replaced my dead 2407 with a 2312 only about 5-6 months ago, would have loved this deal back then. Ah well :(.

      • I only got this monitor about a month ago :P

  • OMG. if only this was 3 weeks ago =(.
I already got my S27A850 and its amazing. I guess I shouldn't feel that much buyers regret lol

  • is it worth it to pay so much money for 2560x1440 resolution compared to 1920x1080 if i plan to use it for Eyefinity 5 portrait setup? Noob here…

    • +2

Depends on what you intend to run across the screens…if you have games in mind then lol good luck.

    • The spaces and bezel in between all those would annoy the hell out of me. I get mildly frustrated with the one separating my 2 x 24's at the moment.

I would say the 2560 x 1440 would be better (though I've never actually had one), but in my mind, there is no link between Eyefinity 5 monitor setup and 'worth it'. It's entirely up to you, and no-one else's input will really help here - only you know if you really want (/need) this, and if you're willing to shell out fore it.
